About the Concrete Screws (Screw Anchors)

Concrete screws, also called screw anchors or screw bolts, screw straight into a drilled hole in concrete, brick or block and cut their own thread, so there is no plug or nut: they fix posts, brackets, bottom plates, handrails and formwork, and come back out cleanly. They come as XBolt PRO and Mungo MCS screws (approved under AS 5216 for cracked and non-cracked concrete), XBolt screws for general medium to heavy fixing, and TX-CON screws for light to medium duty in brick and block, with hex flange, countersunk, pan, dome, stud, coupler and eye heads, zinc plated, galvanised or 316 stainless. Choose the screw, head and size above; the guide below covers which one to use and how to install it.

Also called screw bolts, masonry screws or screw anchors.

Features

  • Cuts its own thread in concrete
  • No expansion sleeve, fully removable
  • Hex-flange, countersunk, dome, eye, stud heads
  • Zinc-plated and stainless

Applications

  • Fixing posts, brackets and handrails to concrete
  • Bottom plates and ledgers to slabs and masonry walls
  • Temporary and permanent formwork
  • Mechanical, electrical and pipe brackets

How concrete screws work

A concrete screw is a one-piece anchor. You drill a hole, then screw the anchor in: its hardened thread taps into the concrete and locks there. There is no expansion sleeve pushing against the hole, so concrete screws can go closer to edges and to each other than expansion anchors, install quickly, and are fully removable.

Common uses are handrails, bottom plates on concrete slabs, formwork supports, mechanical, electrical and pipe brackets, pallet racking, door frames and base plates.

Which screw bolt for concrete?

For brick and block, use TX-CON masonry screws or a chemical anchor with a mesh sleeve. For engineered connections, use an ETA-approved anchor and design to its values.

Head types and finishes

  • Hex flange: the everyday head with a built-in washer, driven with a socket.
  • Countersunk: sits flush in a countersunk fixture.
  • Dome (button) head: a low, neat head with a Torx drive.
  • Stud, coupler and eye: an external thread, internal thread or eye on top, for hanging rod, services and tie points.
  • Zinc plated and zinc yellow: for dry, indoor use. Mechanical galvanised and R1000 coated: for more exposure. Bi-metal 316 stainless with a heat-treated alloy point: for severe marine, chemical, food and brewery environments.

Installing a concrete screw

  1. Drill the hole to the diameter and depth given for the anchor in its data sheet or ETA.
  2. Clean the dust out of the hole.
  3. Drive the screw through the fixture with a socket or the correct bit until the head seats firmly. Do not keep turning once it is tight.
  4. To remove, simply unscrew it.

Questions

What is the difference between a concrete screw and a screw bolt?

They are the same thing: a one-piece anchor that taps its own thread into a drilled hole in concrete. Also called a screw anchor.

Can concrete screws be used in brick?

Yes, TX-CON screws are the brick screws in the range, made for light to medium duty fixing into concrete, brick and block. The XBolt PRO range is for solid concrete.

Are concrete screws removable?

Yes. Concrete screws unscrew fully, which makes them handy for temporary works such as formwork supports.

Which concrete screws comply with AS 5216?

XBolt PRO and MCS concrete screws carry ETA Option 1 approval for cracked and non-cracked concrete, which is how they comply with AS 5216.

What concrete screws should I use near the coast?

The bi-metal 316 stainless XBolt PRO or MCSr 316 stainless screws, made for severe marine and chemical environments.

Where can I buy concrete screws in Adelaide?
