Type 17 Screws (Batten & Decking Screws)
Type 17 batten and decking screws that drive straight into timber without a pilot hole, for battens, decks, pergolas and roofing to timber.
About the Type 17 Screws (Batten & Decking Screws)
Type 17 screws have a slotted cutting point that drives straight into timber with no pilot hole, for roof battens, decking, pergolas, landscaping timber and fixing roof sheeting to timber. They come as bugle batten screws for battens, flanged hex and hex washer screws for roofing and cladding to timber, and self-embedding and countersunk screws for decking, in Class 3, Class 4 or Tykote, or in 304 and 316 stainless. Choose the head, finish and size above; the guide below covers batten and decking screws and which finish to use.
Also called batten screws, decking screws, timber screws or timber tek screws.

Which Type 17 screw?
- Bugle batten screw (ribbed head, internal hex drive): fixing roofing battens to timber rafters and trusses, and heavy timbers. Also in 304 and 316 stainless.
- Flanged hex and hex with seal (Class 4, Scratchguard): fixing steel roofing and cladding to timber battens and frames.
- Self-embedding head (304 stainless, square drive): timber decking in corrosive environments and treated pine. The ribbed head embeds flush with the board.
- Countersunk Torx: treated pine and outdoor furniture, with a T25 Torx drive for a positive fit. No pre-drilling needed.
- Pan, wafer, button and trim heads: general timber fixing and trim.
Type 17 sizes and embedment
Type 17 screws are sized as gauge and threads per inch: a 14-10 is a 14 gauge screw (6.3mm thread) with 10 threads per inch, the usual batten and heavy timber screw; 12-11 (5.5mm) suits lighter work; 10-12 (4.8mm) and smaller suit decking and trim.
For full pull out strength in timber, embed at least 25mm for a 12 gauge screw and 35mm for a 14 gauge screw. Choose a length that gives that embedment after passing through the batten, sheet or board.
Class 3, Class 4 or stainless?
Class 3 suits sheltered and moderate sites, and Class 4 the more corrosive ones. Use 304 stainless for decking and wet areas, and 316 stainless near the coast. For treated pine, Hobson lists its 304 stainless self-embed head screw for timber decking in corrosive environments and as suitable for treated pine, and its Tykote countersunk Torx screws carry a coating specially formulated for resisting treated pine chemicals. Hobson's 316 recommendation for treated timber is in its coach screw guide and applies to coach screws.
Driving Type 17 screws
- Use the right bit: hex socket, internal hex, Torx or square to suit the head.
- Hold the screw square and apply firm, steady pressure while the point cuts in.
- Drive until the head seats. Self-embedding and bugle heads should finish flush; do not overdrive.
