Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • Screw gauge 0 to 18 by diameter: 8g is 4.2mm (0.164"), 10g 4.8mm (0.190"), 12g 5.5mm (0.216"), 14g 6.3mm (0.242") and 18g 7.7mm (0.303").
  • Point types by use: metal point, S500 deep driller for thick metal, metal framing, Type 17 for timber, jmaX for metal plate to timber, vmaX for metal and timber, needle point, and a point for chipboard, treated pine or timber.
  • Covers head types (hex flange, bugle batten, wafer, button and more) and drive types (hex, Torx, square, Phillips, Pozi, one way, trilobular and more).
  • Timber: as a general rule, the minimum embedment to achieve maximum pull-out values is 25mm for 12g and 35mm for 14g. Metal: at least three threads must protrude to achieve maximum pull-out values.
  • Fastener length is generally measured from where the material surface is assumed to be to the end of the fastener.
  • vmaX is for roof sheeting to thin metal battens, timber trusses and steel purlins up to 1.9mm thick. jmaX self-drills and fixes metal plate to timber without splitting.
  • Coatings: E-Coat reduces friction during installation with moderate corrosion protection; TYKOTE is formulated to resist treated pine chemicals.

Who it helps: Builders, roofers and staff matching a screw gauge, point or drive to the job.
