Metal to wood roofing screws with a Type 17 point
These are Hobson DRiLLX Type 17 self-drilling screws with a hex head, sealing washer and XGRiP. Hobson designs the Type 17 point for drilling through lighter steel sections and fastening into timber, and this #14-10 comes only in long lengths, 110 to 300mm, for crest fixing metal roof sheeting into timber battens, trusses and framing through deep profiles, insulated panels, insulation or packing. For ordinary roof sheeting and wall cladding fixed straight onto timber battens, Hobson lists the shorter Type 17 #12-11 screw with XGRiP in 50 and 65mm (see Type 17 #12-11 screws with XGRiP under Related) for crest fixing roofing profiles and wall cladding to timber and steel battens. Hobson's data lists these #14-10 screws in C1022 hardened steel with a Class 4 finish.
XGRiP, the short thread under the head, keeps the sheet clamped onto the seal so it stays watertight under foot traffic.
Fixing into steel battens or purlins instead? Use the metal point tek screw with XGRiP, or the vmaX roofing screw, whose universal point Hobson says suits timber trusses and steel purlins up to 1.9mm.
Choosing the length for timber
- #14-10 is 14 gauge (6.3mm thread) with 10 threads per inch, a coarse thread by Hobson's definition (up to 16 TPI).
- Hobson measures hex screws with a flange or seal from under the head.
- Embedment: as a general rule, Hobson asks for at least 35mm of a 14 gauge screw in the timber for maximum pull-out. Add the height of the sheet profile at the crest, plus any packing or insulation the screw passes through, to 35mm, and pick the next length up.
- Hobson publishes no performance data sheet (pull-out values) for this #14-10 screw. How many screws go in each sheet and batten comes from the roof sheeting maker's installation guide or the building designer, especially in high wind areas.

Painted heads in COLORBOND colours
Every length comes unpainted or with the head painted in one of 33 colours from Hobson's COLORBOND list; the selector names each one, with the New Zealand name Hobson gives in brackets. Bushland, Wilderness, Loft, Headland, Sandbank, Pale Terracotta, Blue Ridge, Plantation, Primrose and Stone are discontinued COLORBOND colours that Hobson paints on request, so ask us before ordering them. Hobson's warranty covers the screw, not the paint. COLORBOND is a registered trademark of BlueScope Steel Limited.
Class 4 coating and warranty
These #14-10 screws are Class 4 (AS 3566.2), the 38 micron mechanically galvanised coating that Hobson's finish guide lists for severe marine (C4) exposure. On a long screw through insulation or packing only the head and washer sit outside, and that is the part Hobson's warranty covers. Class 4 warranty periods:
- Conditions: screw gun installation to Hobson's instructions, and fresh water wash-downs at least every six months in C2 and C3 and every three months in C4 and C5. Staining, dulling and paint wear are not covered.
- Not recommended for very severe marine (C5) sites, where Hobson's warranty covers only 316 bi-metal. Extreme (CX) sites need Hobson's written confirmation first, and Hobson advises professional advice on your site's category (ISO 9223 and AS 4312), or ask us.
- Treated pine: Hobson makes its Tykote coating specifically to resist treated pine chemicals, and its warranty excludes contact with incompatible materials. Ask us before fixing these into treated pine.
Class 4 corrosion warranty periods in years from Hobson's self-drilling screw warranty (effective September 2025). NR = not recommended. Hobson calls its environment descriptions indicative only.
| ISO 9223 category | Environment (Hobson) | Class 4 |
|---|---|---|
| C2 | Urban, inland | 25 |
| C3 | Moderate marine, industrial | 20 |
| C4 | Severe marine, industrial | 15 |
| C5 | Very severe marine, industrial | NR |
How to fit Type 17 roofing screws
Hobson publishes no installation sheet for this #14-10 screw. Its data sheet for the Type 17 #12-11 XGRiP screw (260709DS) gives these steps, which we suggest here:
- Fit a hex nut setter to suit the head in a cordless screwdriver set between 2,200 and 3,000 RPM. Hobson does not recommend impact drivers on its XGRiP roofing screws.
- Place the screw on the crest over the batten or truss, square to the sheet.
- Apply consistently firm pressure while the point cuts through the sheet and into the timber.
- Take care not to overtighten, as Hobson warns that sealing washer damage could result. As general practice, stop when the seal is pressed onto the sheet.
- Clear the drilling swarf off the sheet at the end of each run (general practice): left on the roof it rusts and marks the paint.

Questions
Which Type 17 XGRiP screw for a roof over insulation or packing?
This #14-10, in 110 to 300mm, chosen so at least 35mm goes into the timber after the sheet profile, insulation or packing. For ordinary sheeting straight onto timber battens, Hobson lists the shorter Type 17 #12-11 XGRiP screw in 50 and 65mm. Hobson designs the Type 17 point for drilling through lighter steel and fastening into timber.
How far should a roofing screw go into timber?
As a general rule, Hobson asks for at least 35mm of a 14 gauge screw in the timber for maximum pull-out. Add the sheet profile height at the crest and any packing or insulation to that.
What lengths do they come in?
110, 125, 150, 175, 200, 240 and 300mm, all #14-10. Pick the length that leaves at least 35mm in the timber after the sheet and anything else the screw passes through. Hobson publishes no pull-out data for this screw, so the fixing design comes from the sheeting maker or designer.
Do they come in COLORBOND colours?
Yes. Every length comes unpainted or with heads painted in 33 colours from Hobson's COLORBOND range.
Are they Class 4?
Yes, Class 4 (AS 3566.2), warranted on the exposed head and washer for 25 years in C2, 20 in C3 and 15 in C4 under Hobson's installation and wash-down conditions, and not recommended in very severe marine (C5) sites.
What pack sizes do they come in?
Unpainted 110, 125 and 150mm screws come in packs of 50, every other 110 to 240mm screw in packs of 250, and all 300mm screws in packs of 100.
