Magnetic Nut Setter
Magnetic nut setters for driving hex head and Tek screws: 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch and 14mm.
About the Magnetic Nut Setter
Magnetic nut setters, also called tek screw bits, drive hex head tek, roofing and Type 17 screws, and the magnet holds the screw so you can start it one-handed on a roof or wall sheet. They come in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch and 14mm, from 45 to 300mm long, in standard S2 steel or black impaX, all with a 1/4 inch hex drive, in packs of 10 (25 for the 5/16 x 200mm). Choose the size, range and length above; the guide below shows which size each screw gauge takes.
Also called tek screw bits, magnetic nut drivers or roofing screw bits.

What a magnetic nut setter is
A nut setter is a socket on a 1/4 inch hex shank that fits over the hex head of a screw, so a drill or screw gun can drive it. The magnet in the socket holds the screw on the tip, which lets you start a tek screw one-handed on a roof or a wall sheet. Roofers and builders call them tek screw bits or roofing screw bits; nut drivers and hex drivers are other names for the same tool.
The size is the across-flats size of the screw head, not the screw gauge, so match the nut setter to the head. Phillips, square and Torx screws take a driver bit instead.
What size nut setter for tek screws and roofing screws?
Hobson prints the hex size and the matching nut setter on each of its hex head screw data sheets. Select a row to open that size.
Hex drive sizes from Hobson's screw data sheets. Gauge-TPI is the screw size, for example 12-14 is 12 gauge with 14 threads per inch. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
| Nut setter | Screws Hobson lists it for |
|---|---|
| 1/4 inch | 8 gauge hex stitching screws (8-15) |
| 5/16 inch | 10 gauge hex screws (10-12 stitching and Type 17), 12 gauge tek and Type 17 screws (12-14, 12-11, 12-24), and vmaX roofing screws |
| 3/8 inch | 14 gauge hex screws: tek and roofing screws (14-14, 14-20), Type 17 screws (14-10) and cyclone multiseal roofing screws |
| 14mm | 14mm hex heads. None of the Hobson screw sheets we hold names this size. |
Nut setter sizes and lengths
Every magnetic nut setter we carry. The 45 and 65mm lengths suit most work; the 100 to 300mm nut setters reach screws in recesses and tight corners.
Every magnetic nut setter we carry, smallest to largest head size. Size is across the flats of the screw head; lengths in mm. All have a 1/4 inch hex drive end. Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
Standard S2 or impaX nut setters?
- Standard: S2 alloy steel, in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch and 14mm, including the long 100, 150, 200 and 300mm 5/16 inch nut setters.
- impaX: black S2 alloy steel, which Hobson designed for the high impact forces of modern power tools. 5/16 inch in 45 and 65mm, and 3/8 inch in 45, 65 and 150mm. Hobson's screw data sheets list the impaX nut setters for its tek, roofing and Type 17 screws.
- Hobson also makes spring nut setters in 5/16 and 3/8 inch, which its screw sheets list beside the magnetic ones. They are on the driver socket page.
Driving tek and roofing screws with a nut setter
These steps follow the installation notes on Hobson's hex head screw data sheets. They are the screw maker's instructions, so treat them as the rule for its screws.
- Pick the nut setter that matches the head: 1/4 inch for 8 gauge, 5/16 inch for 10 and 12 gauge, 3/8 inch for 14 gauge.
- Use a cordless screwdriver or screw gun, not an impact driver: every Hobson hex screw sheet we hold says installation with impact drivers is not recommended.
- Use the speed on that screw's own sheet: for example, a maximum of 1,500 RPM for Hobson's flanged hex Type 17 timber screws, 2,200 to 3,000 RPM for the Type 17 hex washer XGRiP 12-11 roofing screw and for metal tek and roofing screws, and a maximum of 2,500 RPM for 8 and 10 gauge stitching screws.
- Fit the nut setter over the screw head and place the screw where it goes.
- Apply firm, steady pressure while the screw drills.
- Take care not to overtighten. For sealed roofing screws, the roofing screw page shows correct seal compression.

Questions
What size nut setter do I need for tek screws?
It depends on the head, which usually follows the gauge on Hobson's screws (vmaX roofing screws, 6.2 gauge, take 5/16 inch): 1/4 inch for 8 gauge hex stitching screws, 5/16 inch for 10 and 12 gauge, and 3/8 inch for 14 gauge. Check the hex size printed on the screw's data sheet or box.
What size bit for roofing screws?
A 3/8 inch nut setter for 14 gauge roofing screws, including Hobson's cyclone multiseal screws, and 5/16 inch for 12 gauge and vmaX roofing screws.
Can I use a nut setter in an impact driver?
The impaX nut setters are made for the high impact forces of power tools, but every Hobson tek, roofing and Type 17 screw sheet we hold says installation with impact drivers is not recommended. For those screws, use a cordless screw gun at the speed on the sheet.
Are tek screw bits and nut setters the same thing?
Yes. A tek screw bit, roofing screw bit, nut setter and nut driver all describe a hex socket on a 1/4 inch shank for driving hex head screws. Ours are magnetic, so the screw stays on the tip.
Why use a long nut setter?
To reach screws you cannot get the tool close to, such as in recesses or tight corners. We carry 5/16 inch nut setters up to 300mm long and a 3/8 inch impaX at 150mm.
How are nut setters sold?
In packs of 10, except the 5/16 x 200mm, which comes in packs of 25.
