About the Sleeve Anchors (Dynabolt-Style)

Sleeve anchors, often called dynabolts, are the everyday bolts for fixing things to solid concrete, like brackets, handrails, gate posts and timber plates: you drill, tap the anchor through the fixture and tighten it so the sleeve grips the hole. They come as Tygabolt sleeve anchors in zinc yellow, mechanical galvanised or 316 stainless, with a hex nut, flush, countersunk, dome, mushroom or eye head, plus security sleeve anchors. Choose the head, finish and size above; the guide below covers sizes, installation and when to use something else.

Also called Dynabolt-style anchors or masonry bolts.

Features

  • Full-length expansion sleeve
  • For solid concrete
  • Standard, flush, countersunk and eye heads
  • Zinc, galvanised and stainless

Applications

  • Brackets, gate posts and fixtures to solid concrete
  • Handrails and balustrade brackets
  • Timber plates and frames to slabs
  • Formwork supports

How sleeve anchors work

A sleeve anchor is a fully assembled, one-piece anchor. You drill a hole, tap the anchor in through the fixture, then tighten the nut: this draws a cone up into the sleeve, expanding it against the side of the hole. Claws on the sleeve stop it spinning while you tighten, and it can be loaded straight away.

Sleeve anchors are for solid concrete, for light to medium duty fixings such as handrails, formwork supports, and mechanical, electrical and pipe brackets.

Sleeve anchor sizes and installation

Sleeve anchors are sized by the hole they go in, so the anchor size is also your drill size. A 10mm sleeve anchor goes in a 10mm hole and has an M8 thread.

Head types and finishes

  • Hex nut: the standard sleeve anchor, for brackets and plates.
  • Flush and countersunk head: sit level with the fixture surface.
  • Dome and mushroom head: a neat, rounded head. The mushroom head security anchor uses a Torx drive and an anti-tamper plug, and is ETA approved (Option 7) for non-cracked concrete.
  • Eye: an eye on top for wire and light ties; Hobson publishes no rating for it, so it is not for anchoring people or loads: use a rated anchor point.
  • Zinc yellow for indoor use, mechanical galvanised for more exposure, 316 stainless for wet and coastal areas.

Installing a sleeve anchor

  1. Drill a hole the same diameter as the anchor, at least the minimum depth in the table.
  2. Blow and brush the dust out of the hole.
  3. Push or tap the anchor through the fixture into the hole until the washer sits on the fixture.
  4. Tighten the nut to the torque in the table. Do not overtighten.
  5. Keep to the minimum edge and spacing distances, and the minimum concrete thickness, so the concrete does not crack.

Fixing into brick or hollow block?

Our sleeve anchors are made for solid concrete. For brick and block, use TX-CON masonry screws for light to medium duty, or a chemical anchor with a mesh sleeve for hollow masonry and heavier loads.

Questions

Is a sleeve anchor the same as a dynabolt?

Yes, dynabolt is a common name for a sleeve anchor: a one-piece anchor whose sleeve expands in the hole as the nut is tightened.

What size drill for a sleeve anchor?

The same as the anchor size: a 10mm sleeve anchor needs a 10mm hole. A 10mm anchor has an M8 thread, 12mm has M10, and 16mm has M12. Dynabolt sizes get quoted both ways, so an M10 dynabolt (12mm hole) is bigger than a 10mm one (M8 thread).

Can I use sleeve anchors in brick?

Our sleeve anchors are for solid concrete. For brick and block, use TX-CON masonry screws or a chemical anchor with a mesh sleeve.

How tight should a sleeve anchor be?

Tighten to the installation torque for its size, for example 25Nm for a 10mm (M8) anchor and 40Nm for a 12mm (M10) anchor. Overtightening can crack the concrete.

Sleeve anchor or concrete screw?

Both suit solid concrete. Concrete screws allow closer edge and spacing distances and can be removed; sleeve anchors are quick to fit through the fixture and can be loaded straight away.
