Nylon Wall Plugs & Screws
Nylon wall plugs (Rawlplug-style) for screwing shelving, rails, fittings and battens into brick, concrete, block and board.
About the Nylon Wall Plugs & Screws
Nylon wall plugs let a screw hold in brick, concrete, block and stone, for shelving, curtain rails, light fittings, cabinets and timber battens. The range runs from grey universal plugs and Mungo MN plugs (4 to 20mm) to MNK collar, MNL long and MU multi plugs for hollow brick and board, scaffold plugs, spaghetti roll plugs and a 230 plug kit, plus Mungo frame plugs with zinc plated, galvanised or 316 stainless screws, Wall Katt screws that need no plug and MEF Easy-Fix for aerated concrete. Choose the plug, size and length above; the guide below covers which plug to use, drill sizes and fitting.
Also called masonry plugs, plastic wall plugs, concrete wall plugs or Rawlplug-style plugs.

Which wall plug for brick, concrete or hollow walls?
- Solid brick, concrete, stone and lightweight concrete: Mungo MN nylon plug (4 to 20mm), made from polyamide PA6, for wood, chipboard and metric screws, fitted before the fixture or through it. MNK is a collar version, and MNL a longer plug in 6 and 8mm.
- Concrete, stone and brick, light duty: the grey universal nylon wall plug with a tapered point, for coach and self-tapping screws, with anti-rotation barbs and a countersunk end for a flush finish.
- Hollow brick, hollow masonry, plasterboard and chipboard: Mungo MU multi plug. It knots behind the wall in a cavity, and its collar breaks away so it can be used through the fixture.
- Fixing timber or aluminium frames straight through: nylon frame plugs, supplied with their screw, in lengths up to 300mm. More frame plugs are on our frame plug page.
- Concrete, solid brick, solid block and stone, light duty: spaghetti roll plug, pushed into the hole to the depth needed and cut off flush.
- No plug at all: Wall Katt screws go straight into plasterboard, timber and aerated concrete, and into concrete, brick and hollow block with a pre-drilled hole.
- Aerated concrete (AAC): MEF Easy-Fix, a zinc plated steel fixing that needs no pre-drilling in aerated concrete (dense or aged material may need it).
Wall plug sizes and drill sizes
A wall plug size is the drill size: a 6mm plug goes in a 6mm hole. Drill deeper than the plug and use a screw long enough to pass through the fixture and the full length of the plug. For the MN plug, Mungo gives the drill depth and screw size for each plug, and the screw should be at least the plug length plus 5mm plus the fixture thickness (Mungo's anchorage depth is the plug length plus 5mm).
Mungo also publishes recommended tension loads for a single MN plug. They include a safety factor of 5, apply to Mungo MN plugs only, and assume a wood screw of the largest diameter listed and, in concrete, non-cracked concrete C20/25 or stronger. They must be reduced for shear, bending, combined tension and shear, reduced edge distance or spacing, and groups of plugs, and Mungo says the data must be checked by an engineer experienced in anchorage for the actual conditions. As a guide, 1kN is about 102kg.
Mungo MN nylon plug installation data and recommended tension resistance, from Mungo's MN data sheet. Nylon frame plugs on this page
A frame plug is a long nylon plug supplied with its screw, pushed through a pre-drilled timber or aluminium frame into the wall behind, so you fix the frame without marking out holes in the wall first. The size is the plug diameter (8 or 10mm); the length is shown as plug length / maximum fixture thickness, so 100/30 is a 100mm plug that fixes through up to 30mm of frame.
From Mungo's product guide and data sheets: MB plugs are for softer materials, MBR plugs for solid materials and MQL plugs are universal; a K in the code means a collar plug and XT a high performance version. The screw comes zinc plated, hot dip galvanised (F suffix) or 316 stainless (R suffix). Mungo's MB and MQL data sheets list the MB 10 and MQL 10 plugs for multiple use in concrete and masonry for non-structural applications under European Technical Assessments ETA-15/0068 and ETA-11/0008. The MQL sheet marks MQL 8 as not part of the assessment, and the sheets do not cover the MBR or MB 8 plugs. For anything structural, use the fixing the designer specifies.
- Drill through the frame and into the wall at the plug diameter (no hammer drilling in hollow masonry or aerated concrete).
- Clean the hole (not needed in hollow brick).
- Push the pre-assembled plug and screw through the frame until the plug's collar meets the frame.
- Tighten the screw until the collar is drawn tight, without over-tightening.

How to fit a wall plug in brick or concrete
From Mungo's MN installation guide, with the hollow brick drilling rule from the MU multi plug sheet:
- Drill the hole at the plug size and deeper than the plug (see the drill depth in the MN table). In hollow brick, Mungo's MU sheet calls for rotary drilling, not hammer.
- Clean the dust out of the hole (not needed in hollow brick).
- Push the plug in flush with the surface, or through the fixture for through fixing.
- Drive the screw through the fixture into the plug. The plug expands as the screw goes in.
- Tighten the screw until the fixture is held firm.
Spaghetti roll plugs and Wall Katt screws
- Spaghetti roll plugs: drill a 5.0 or 5.5mm hole deep enough for the screw or nail, clean it out, push the spaghetti to the full depth and cut it off, then fix through the fixture with a 6 or 8 gauge screw or a nail of at least 3.5mm. Green rolls are 5.0mm for 6 gauge screws; red rolls are 5.5mm for 6 or 8 gauge screws, in 5m and 50m rolls.
- Wall Katt universal pan screws: a 6.5mm screw that needs no plug, for conduit and pipe saddles, light fittings, signage and brackets. No pre-drilling in plasterboard; pre-drill a 5.0mm hole in concrete, brick and hollow block, and pre-drill hardwood. Install with a non-impact driver.
- MEF Easy-Fix: a zinc plated fixing for aerated concrete (AAC), used with wood, self-tapping or hex head screws and fitted before the fixture. Mungo lists it for indoor applications; pre-drilling may be needed in dense or aged material, and the harder the material the larger the drill.
Nylon wall plug materials
Mungo's MN and MU data sheets give those plugs as polyamide PA6 nylon, for indoor and outdoor use, and note that PA6 absorbs sound transmitted between the fixture and the wall. Our product data also lists the MNK, MNL and scaffold plugs as PA6 nylon; we hold no Mungo sheet for those. The universal plugs are grey nylon and the spaghetti rolls are plastic. Frame plug screws are zinc plated steel for dry, indoor conditions, hot dip galvanised, or 316 stainless for outdoor and coastal work.

Questions
Which brick wall plugs should I use?
For solid brick, the Mungo MN nylon plug or the grey universal wall plug. For hollow brick, the MU multi plug, which knots behind the wall in the cavity; drill hollow brick without hammer action.
What size drill bit for a 6mm nylon wall plug?
A 6mm bit. A wall plug is sized by its drill hole. For the MN 6mm plug, Mungo gives a 40mm drill depth and a 3.5 to 5mm wood screw.
What screw size goes with a nylon wall plug?
For the MN plug: 2.2 to 3mm screws in a 4mm plug, 2.6 to 4mm in 5mm, 3.5 to 5mm in 6mm, 4.5 to 6mm in 8mm and 6 to 8mm in 10mm. Mungo gives the screw length as at least the plug length plus 5mm plus the fixture thickness. Our product descriptions show the screw gauge on many sizes, such as 8 gauge for 6mm.
How much weight can a nylon wall plug hold?
For one Mungo MN plug in tension, in non-cracked concrete C20/25 or stronger, with the largest wood screw listed, Mungo recommends 0.25kN (4mm plug, about 25kg) to 5.2kN (20mm plug, about 530kg), safety factor 5 included; less in clay solid brick and much less in lightweight concrete. Reduce for shear, bending, combined loads, close edges or spacing and groups of plugs, and have an engineer experienced in anchorage check the figures. These figures are for MN plugs only; the full table is above.
Which nylon wall plugs and screws suit concrete?
In concrete, use the MN plug or universal plug with a wood or chipboard screw, a frame plug to fix straight through a frame, or a Wall Katt screw in a 5mm pre-drilled hole with no plug.
What is a frame plug?
A long nylon plug supplied with its screw, pushed through a pre-drilled frame into the wall. The second length figure is the maximum frame thickness: a 100/30 fixes through up to 30mm.
Can I cut nylon wall plugs to length?
Use spaghetti roll plugs: push them into a 5.0 or 5.5mm hole and cut them off flush, then screw or nail through the fixture.
Which nylon wall plug do I use for tiles?
The plug grips in the wall behind the tile, not in the tile, so choose it for that wall: the MN or universal plug for solid brick and concrete, the MU multi plug for hollow brick or plasterboard. Count the tile as part of the fixture when you work out the screw length.
Where can I buy nylon wall plugs in Adelaide?
