About the Hollow Wall & Plasterboard Anchors
Hollow wall anchors are for hanging things on plasterboard and other hollow walls and ceilings, like shelves, towel rails, curtain rods, pictures and light fittings, where a normal screw would pull out. They come as all-metal expanding hollow wall anchors (M4 to M6, for walls up to 38mm thick), cavity toggles, nylon hollow brick plugs and ceiling anchors for concrete and hollow core slabs. Which hollow wall anchor?
- Metal hollow wall anchor (a Molly-style anchor): an all-metal, light duty cavity fixing for plasterboard and other hollow walls up to 38mm thick. Its legs fold up behind the board as it is set, and barbs under the flange stop it spinning. For electrical fittings, light fittings, brackets and hooks.
- Cavity toggle and snap toggle (toggle bolts): a bar that passes through the hole and sits across the back of the board, for heavier items on plasterboard and panels.
- Hollow brick plug: a nylon plug that expands inside hollow brick and block.
- Hollow core slab ceiling anchor (MHDA): an internally threaded anchor for prestressed hollow core concrete slabs, for hanging pipes, ventilation and cable tray.
- Ceiling anchor (MAN): for hanging from concrete ceilings.
Hollow wall anchor sizes and wall thickness
Choose the anchor whose grip range covers the total thickness of the wall lining, including any tiles. For a single sheet of 10 or 13mm plasterboard, the M4 anchor for 9 to 15mm is the one.
How to fit a hollow wall anchor
- Drill a clearance hole through the board at the size for the anchor.
- Tap the anchor in until the flange sits flat and the barbs bite into the surface.
- Set it: squeeze a hollow wall anchor setting tool over the screw head, or tighten the screw until you feel firm resistance. The legs fold up tight behind the board.
- Take the screw out, put it through the item you are hanging, and screw it back into the anchor.

What anchor should I use in plasterboard?
A metal hollow wall anchor for light duty items such as light fittings, brackets and hooks, or a toggle for heavier items. They suit Gyprock and other plasterboard, which is why they are also called Gyprock anchors or wall plug anchors. For a single 10 or 13mm sheet, choose the M4 hollow wall anchor for 9 to 15mm.
How do I choose the right size hollow wall anchor?
Measure the total thickness of the wall lining and pick the anchor whose grip range covers it. Our metal hollow wall anchors cover walls from 0 to 38mm thick.
Do I need a tool for hollow wall anchors?

Not the spring wing type. Butterfly bolts and toggle bolts both open out behind the board; in this range the MK-M cavity toggle (M5 and M6) and the MST snap toggle (M6) do that job for heavier items, and the metal hollow wall anchor suits lighter ones.
