Hollow Wall Anchor Setting Tool
A ratchet style setting tool for M4 to M6 hollow wall anchors.
About the Hollow Wall Anchor Setting Tool
A hollow wall anchor setting tool pulls the legs of a metal hollow wall anchor up behind the plasterboard with a squeeze, so the anchor is set before you hang anything on it, faster than turning the screw when you have plenty to fit. It is Hobson's ratchet style carbon steel tool for M4 to M6 anchors, the one it recommends for its standard hollow wall anchor, sold singly. The guide below covers which anchors it sets and how to use it.
Also called hollow wall anchor setting tool, plasterboard anchor setting tool or cavity anchor tool.
Applications
- Setting M4 to M6 hollow wall (plasterboard) anchors
- Fit-out jobs with lots of anchors to set
What a hollow wall anchor setting tool does
A metal hollow wall anchor has to be set before you hang anything on it: its legs fold up and grip the back of the board. You can do that by turning the screw until it goes firm, or faster with a setting tool: you fit the tool over the screw head and squeeze it, and it pulls the anchor's legs up in the wall cavity.
Ours is Hobson's ratchet style hollow wall anchor tool, carbon steel, listed for M4 to M6 anchors. Hobson recommends it as the setting tool for its standard (MWHDZPCM) hollow wall anchor.

Which hollow wall anchors it sets
Hobson's standard hollow wall anchor is an all-metal, light duty cavity fixing for plasterboard and other hollow wall materials up to 38mm thick, in zinc plated carbon steel. The setting tool covers all three thread sizes in the range:
- M4: five lengths, for walls from 0 to 4mm up to 30 to 38mm thick, in an 8mm clearance hole.
- M5: two lengths, for walls 5 to 13mm and 5 to 17mm thick, in a 10mm hole.
- M6: two lengths, for walls 4 to 13mm and 5 to 18mm thick, in an 11mm hole.
- Pick the anchor whose wall thickness range covers the board plus any tiles: the hollow wall anchor page has every size.
How to use a hollow wall anchor setting tool
From the installation guide on Hobson's hollow wall anchor data sheet.
- No tool? Turn the screw clockwise with a screwdriver instead. It gets harder to turn as the legs fold up behind the board; stop when you feel firm resistance.
- Drill the clearance hole for the anchor through the board.
- Push the anchor in and tap the head until the barbs bite into the board and the head sits flush with the surface.
- Back the screw head out 2 to 3mm.
- Fit the tool over the screw head and squeeze the handles to pull the anchor's legs up in the wall cavity.
- Take the screw out.
- Put the screw through the item you are fixing and screw it back into the anchor until the item is secure.

Questions
Do I need a tool for hollow wall anchors?
No, but it is quicker. Without one, turn the screw clockwise until you feel firm resistance as the legs fold up behind the board. With the setting tool, back the screw out 2 to 3mm, fit the tool over the head and squeeze.
What size anchors does the setting tool take?
M4 to M6 hollow wall anchors. That covers every thread size in Hobson's standard metal hollow wall anchor range, which Hobson recommends this tool for.
Why back the screw out before using the tool?
Hobson's installation guide says to back the screw head out 2 to 3mm before fitting the tool, so the tool can get under the head and pull the screw back as you squeeze.
Does it work on plastic plugs or toggles?
Hobson lists it as the setting tool for its metal hollow wall anchors, M4 to M6. Plastic plugs and toggles are fitted in their own ways, so follow the instructions for those.
What is the tool made of?
Carbon steel, in a ratchet style, per Hobson's Conxtruct range guide.
