Applies to Nylon Wall Plugs & Screws and Wall Plug.

Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • For concrete, clay solid and hollow brick, calcium silicate brick, solid lightweight concrete and autoclaved aerated concrete, indoors and outdoors. Takes wood, chipboard or metric screws.
  • Six sizes, 5 to 14mm. Drill the same diameter as the plug: from a 5mm plug (25mm long) in a 35mm deep hole up to a 14mm plug (70mm long) in a 90mm deep hole.
  • Wood or chipboard screw diameter: 2.6 to 4mm (5mm plug), 3.5 to 5mm (6), 4.5 to 6mm (8), 6 to 8mm (10), 8 to 10mm (12), 10 to 12mm (14). Metric M3 and M4 suit the 5 and 6mm plugs. Screw length is the screw anchorage depth (30mm for the 5mm plug up to 80mm for the 14mm) plus the fixture thickness.
  • Recommended tension load, safety factor 5 included, with the largest wood screw: in non-cracked concrete C20/25 or stronger, 0.45kN (5mm plug) to 3kN (14mm). The 8mm plug: 1.2kN in concrete, 1kN in clay solid brick, 0.19kN in aerated concrete.
  • Reduce these values for shear, bending, combined loads, close edges or groups of plugs. The document says the data must be checked by an engineer experienced in anchorage.
  • Install: drill, clean the hole (not needed in hollow brick), push the plug in (face fixing only), then drive the screw through the fixture. Knock-in protection stops early expansion and anti-rotation stops the plug spinning.

Who it helps: Anyone fixing into concrete, brick or blockwork with a plug and screw, and staff matching plug, drill and screw sizes.
