Nylon Frame Plug
Nylon frame plugs supplied with a hex, flange hex or countersunk Torx screw, from Mungo and Onego, mostly 10mm diameter from 60 to 300mm long.
About the Nylon Frame Plug
Frame plugs, or frame fixings, are long nylon plugs supplied with their screw for fixing door frames, jambs, window frames and timber battens straight through into brick and concrete in one go. They come as Mungo MB-ST (8 and 10mm, Torx), MBR-SS (10mm, hex head) and MQLK-STB collar plugs with zinc plated, hot dip galvanised or 316 stainless screws, and Onego hex head, flange hex and countersunk Torx plugs in 10mm, from 60 to 300mm long. Choose the type, finish and length above; the guide below covers which plug suits which wall, drill sizes and fitting.
Also called frame fixings, frame anchors or frame screws.

Door frame fixing: jambs, door frames and window frames
A frame plug is a long nylon plug supplied with its screw already fitted. You drill through the frame and into the wall in one go, push the plug and screw through, and tighten. The frame does not have to be taken away to mark and drill the wall, which is why frame fixings are used for fixing door frames and jambs, window frames, timber battens and subframes to brick and concrete.
Mungo makes three families, from its product guide: MB plugs for softer materials, MBR plugs for solid materials and MQL plugs as universal plugs. K in a code means a collar plug, F a hot dip galvanised screw and R a 316 stainless screw. The Onego plugs (GBD, GRD, GQK and GRK) come with hex head, flange hex or countersunk Torx screws; Hobson publishes no installation data for them in the documents we have, so check the pack.
Frame fixing drill size, drill depth and maximum frame thickness
For the Mungo 10mm plugs, the European Technical Assessments give the installation data below. The length is shown as plug length / maximum fixture thickness: an MB-ST 100/30 is a 100mm plug that fixes through up to 30mm of frame, leaving 70mm in the wall. Add any packing behind the frame to the frame thickness.
Mungo lists these plugs for multiple use in concrete and masonry for non-structural applications only, under ETA-15/0068 (MB and MBR) and ETA-11/0008 (MQL), designed under the responsibility of an engineer experienced in anchorages. Hobson publishes no load figures for the Onego plugs or the 8mm MB-ST. For anything structural, use the fixing the designer specifies.
Installation data for Mungo 10mm frame plugs, from the MB/MBR (ETA-15/0068) and MQL (ETA-11/0008) assessments and the MB data sheet; MQL maximum frame thickness from Mungo's MQL data sheet, which marks it as not part of the ETA. Dimensions in mm. Embedment is the plug length in the wall. AAC = autoclaved aerated concrete. The 8mm MB-ST and the Onego plugs are not covered. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
| Plug | Base material | Drill diameter | Hole depth | Embedment | Clearance hole in frame | Max frame thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MB 10 (MB-ST) | Concrete, solid and hollow brick | 10 | 80 | 70 | 10.5 | 230 |
| MB 10 (MB-ST) | Aerated concrete (AAC) | 9 | 100 | 90 | 10.5 | 210 |
| MBR 10 (MBR-SS) | Concrete, solid and hollow brick | 10 | 60 | 50 | 10.5 | 190 |
| MQL 10 (MQLK-STB) | Concrete, solid and hollow brick | 10 | 80 | 70 or more | 10.5 | 230 |
Frame fixing edge distance, spacing and wall thickness
The same ETAs only apply when each plug sits far enough from the edge of the wall or slab, far enough from the next plug, and in a wall or slab thick enough. Closer than this, or in a thinner member, the ETA does not apply. Door and window jamb fixings often sit closer to the edge of the brick than these distances, so check your fixing positions against the table before you drill, and ask the designer where they cannot be met.
Minimum member thickness, edge distance and spacing for Mungo 10mm frame plugs, from ETA-15/0068 Tables B3 and B4 (MB and MBR) and ETA-11/0008 Tables B3 and B4 (MQL). Dimensions in mm. Concrete is by strength grade. In brick and block, spacing is shown as perpendicular to the edge / parallel to the edge, and the figures vary by the brick type the ETA lists. The 8mm MB-ST and the Onego plugs are not covered. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

How to fit a frame fixing
From Mungo's MB data sheet and the ETA installation instructions:
- Pack and square the frame, then drill through the frame and into the wall at the drill diameter, to at least the hole depth. Mungo's MB sheet says no hammer drilling in hollow brick or aerated concrete.
- Clean the dust out of the hole (not needed in hollow brick).
- Push the pre-assembled plug and screw through the frame until the plug's collar meets the frame.
- Tighten the screw until the collar is drawn tight against the frame, without over-tightening.
Which screw finish: zinc, galvanised or stainless?
The ETAs set the screw by exposure: zinc coated (or stainless) screws for dry internal conditions; stainless for external exposure, including industrial and marine environments, and permanently damp internal conditions, unless conditions are particularly aggressive, such as seawater splash or indoor swimming pools. A galvanised screw can be used outside only where the head is protected from moisture and driving rain by cladding or a rainscreen and the head is coated with a soft, permanently elastic sealant.
So for an internal door frame, zinc plated is fine. For window frames, external door frames and anything that stays damp, the ETAs point to a stainless screw: the 316 stainless MQLK-STBR, or a stainless Mungo frame fixing from the wall plug page. Mungo's temperature range for the MB, MBR and MQL plugs is -20 to +80°C (+50°C long term), with installation between -20 and +50°C. ETA-15/0068 also limits an MB or MBR plug left unprotected in sunlight to no more than 6 weeks of UV exposure.
The Onego GQK-FO also comes with a 316 stainless screw (10 x 100). Onego plugs are not covered by these ETAs, and Hobson publishes no installation or exposure data for them in the documents we have.

Questions
How do you fix a door frame to a brick wall?
Pack and square the frame, then fix the door jamb straight through: drill through the jamb into the brick and fit a nylon frame fixing. For a Mungo MB-ST 10mm, use a 10mm drill to 80mm deep, with the frame up to the second length figure (100/30 fixes through 30mm). Keep each fixing at least the ETA's minimum edge distance from the edge of the brick (120mm for an MB 10 in solid clay brick, 100mm for an MQL 10 in brick) and in a wall at least as thick as the edge distance table in this guide says; closer than this, the ETA does not apply. Use stainless screws where the frame is exposed to the weather.
What size drill for a 10mm frame fixing?
A 10mm masonry drill in concrete and brick for the Mungo MB, MBR and MQL 10mm plugs, and 9mm for the MB in aerated concrete. Drill the frame at 10.5mm clearance if you pre-drill it separately.
What do the two numbers on a frame fixing mean?
Plug length / maximum fixture thickness. An 80/10 is an 80mm plug for up to 10mm of frame; a 120/50 is 120mm for up to 50mm.
What length frame fixing do I need?
One whose second number is at least the frame thickness plus any packing. For an MB-ST, 70mm of the plug sits in the wall, so plug length = frame and packing + 70mm, rounded up to the next size.
Can I use them for fixing window frames?
Yes, they are made to fix through window and door frames. Use a stainless screw for external windows, as the ETAs limit zinc coated screws to dry internal conditions.
Are frame fixings structural?
No. Mungo lists them for non-structural applications only, designed by an engineer experienced in anchorages. For structural fixing use the anchor the designer specifies.
