Bags per post hole
Work out the bags for your hole and post with the fence post calculator. As a guide, a 200 × 600mm hole with a 90x90 post takes about 2 × 20kg bags; for Rapid Set, Cement Australia gives about 2 × 20kg bags per post hole.
Cement, concrete, mortar and render
- Cement is a powder that acts as the glue. On its own it is an ingredient, not a finished product.
- Concrete is cement, sand, stone and water. Mortar is cement and sand, for laying bricks and blocks. Render is a cement and sand coat spread over a wall.
- Hydrated lime and clay go into mortar and render to make them easier to work.

Bagged concrete questions
Which cement should I buy?
For mixing your own concrete, mortar or render, start with Builders Cement or General Purpose Cement, and Low Carbon Cement swaps in for GP. For a light or white finish, see Off White Cement or White Cement.
Which product fills paver joints?
Joints up to 3mm take Gap Sand; wider joints take Sand & Cement.
How many bags do I need for my job?
For posts, the fence post calculator works it out for your hole and post: a 200 × 600mm hole with a 90x90 post takes about 2 × 20kg bags. For a small pad or footing, use the slab or footing calculator, or put the sizes on your quote request and we will work out the bags with you. For anything bigger, check the volume guide first.
Can I mix my own concrete?
Yes. Builders Cement is the cement Cement Australia recommends for it, and that page says when mixing your own makes sense. The ratios are in our mix ratio table.
Can I buy a single bag?
Yes. Everything on this page is ordered by the bag: tell us how many bags you need, from one up. Each product page shows how its bags come packed on pallets.
Can I get a disposable pallet?
Yes, when your order includes a full pallet. You can also choose a CHEP pallet, exchanged at delivery; if no CHEP pallet is swapped, a pallet charge applies. White Cement and Cold Mix Asphalt only come on disposable pallets.
What if the exact brand is not available?
Leave “Allow an equivalent brand” ticked when you add to your quote and we may supply an equivalent product to the same specification. Untick it if you need that exact product.
Sources and guidance
The product information on this page comes from Cement Australia's published product data sheets, safety data sheets and website (see each product's Documents section). It is general guidance only. Other manufacturers may give different advice for their own products, so always follow the instructions on the bag and the product's data sheet. Structural work, such as footings for buildings, must follow your engineer's design and the relevant Australian Standards.
