About Clay 20kg
A finely milled, air separated clay, which Cement Australia also calls fireclay. Add it to mortar or render when your sand is short on clay, to make the mix more workable. It also works as a general purpose filler and provides refractory properties.
Use as little as you can to get the workability you need.

Not for
- Replacing hydrated lime: clay is not a substitute
How to use
- Trial it in your mix first. Cement Australia sets no mix design, because results depend on your sand.
- Make a test panel before adding it to the job, especially where colour matters.
- Add only as much as you need for a workable mortar or render: too much clay lowers bond and strength and adds shrinkage.
- If the mortar has to meet AS3700, test the mix as the Standard describes once clay is added.
Storage & safety
- Keep the bags dry.
- Clay dust contains crystalline silica, which can cause cancer if breathed in. Wear dust-proof goggles and gloves, and do not breathe the dust.
- Handle the bags safely: its Safety Data Sheet says to follow the manual handling code of practice.

Clay questions
As little as gets the workability you need. Cement Australia does not set a mix design, because it depends on your sand, so trial it first.
No. Clay is not a substitute for hydrated lime.
Cement Australia warns that hardened concrete, mortar and plaster can be damaged at high temperatures. To line a pizza oven or another very hot area, it recommends a high alumina cement (Ciment Fondu) from a specialty cement supplier, and technical advice unless you are experienced with specialty cements.
Sources and guidance
The product information on this page comes from Cement Australia's published product data sheets, safety data sheets and website (see Documents above). It is general guidance only. Other manufacturers may give different advice for their own products, so always follow the instructions on the bag and the product's data sheet.
