About Builders Cement 20kg
A uniform blend of Portland cement and fly ash or slag, made to the Type GB requirements of AS3972 and also meeting Type SL and SR. Concrete made with it is easier to work, keeps gaining strength over time and lasts better. Early strength gain can be slower than GP cement, so curing matters more.
Cement Australia recommends it for mixing your own concrete at home, for a creamy mix and a smooth surface.

- Brick and block mortar
- Wall render and grouts
Not for
- Work that needs a fast set or high early strength, where a specialised cement suits better
How to use
- Combine Builders Cement with sand and clean aggregate in the ratio for your job, in a barrow or tub that will not soak up water. A mixer saves effort on larger pours.
- Bring in drinkable water slowly and mix through, using only enough for a creamy, workable mix.
- Place it straight away, then keep it moist for a week. Blended cement depends more on curing for full strength.
Storage & safety
Keeps about 6 months from manufacture, sealed, dry and off the ground. Do not use a bag that has gone hard. Wear dust-proof goggles and PVC or rubber gloves. Each 20kg bag is a two-person lift. Storing and handling bagged cement.
- Its Safety Data Sheet also warns against breathing the dust.

Builders Cement questions
Yes, that is what Cement Australia recommends it for, on jobs of about 0.1 to 0.5m3, and it gives a creamier, easier to work concrete with a smooth surface finish. For how much sand and aggregate to add, see our mix ratio table, linked below these questions.
As cement : sand : lime, Cement Australia's data sheet gives 1 : 3 : 0 to 0.2 for a high durability mortar such as a retaining wall, 1 : 4.5 : 0.2 to 0.5 for maximum bond such as structural brickwork, and 1 : 6 : 1 for general purpose mortar. Wall render is 1 : 3 with no lime.
