About Low Carbon Cement 20kg

A direct replacement for General Purpose cement, made with GreenCem technology. Cement Australia states it has 30% less embodied CO2 than standard GP cement, with comparable strength, lower permeability, better durability and improved workability.

Use the same mix ratios you would with GP cement. It meets the Type GB requirements of AS3972, and its Environmental Product Declaration also lists Type SL and SR.

Concrete and render ratios with the bags of cement per m3 are in our mix ratio table; mortar mixes are on the mortar calculator.

Best for

  • Batching your own concrete for small jobs
  • Mortar, render and grout
  • Any job you would use GP cement for

Not for

  • Rapid setting or high early strength work: consider a more specialised cement

How to use

  1. Swap it straight in for GP cement and keep your usual mix design: the same cement, sand and aggregate ratios apply.
  2. Mix in a non-porous container, adding drinkable water gradually. It may need less water than GP cement for the same workability.
  3. Use the batch as soon as it is mixed and keep the concrete moist for 7 days.

Storage & safety

Keeps about 6 months from manufacture, sealed, dry and off the ground. Do not use a bag that has gone hard. Wear dust-proof goggles and PVC or rubber gloves. Each 20kg bag is a two-person lift. Storing and handling bagged cement.

Low Carbon Cement questions

Yes. It is made as a direct replacement, with comparable strength, and uses the same mix ratios as GP cement.

Cement Australia states 30% less embodied CO2 than standard GP cement. Separately, the product has its own independently verified Environmental Product Declaration, which puts its footprint at 544kg CO2e per tonne (stages A1 to A3).

In Cement Australia's NATA registered lab tests, 7 day mortar strength was 13MPa against 12MPa for GP, and 28 day concrete strength was 31MPa against 29MPa. It calls the results indicative only.

It may need less. Concrete made with it can reach the same workability as GP concrete with less water.

Lower drying shrinkage and creep, better resistance to sulfate attack and chloride penetration, and potentially less efflorescence.

Sources and guidance

The product information on this page comes from Cement Australia's published product data sheets, safety data sheets and website (see Documents above). It is general guidance only. Other manufacturers may give different advice for their own products, so always follow the instructions on the bag and the product's data sheet. Structural work, such as footings for buildings, must follow your engineer's design and the relevant Australian Standards.
