XBolt PRO rod hangers for concrete
The XBolt PRO is a screw type anchor for solid concrete. Screwed into a drilled hole, it taps its own thread into the concrete, and the dual thread nut on top takes threaded rod: M8 or M10 in the 40 and 55mm hangers, M10 or M12 in the 60mm hanger. Hobson lists it for mechanical, electrical and pipe hangers, ceiling hangers, HVAC, fire sprinklers, cable tray and suspension of mechanical services, for light to medium duty loads. It is fully removable.
Approvals differ by code, so check the code on the box against the table. The ETA (ETA-14/0374) covers carbon steel versions like these in dry internal conditions, in C20/25 to C50/60 concrete, cracked and non-cracked, with hammer drilled holes only, and says anchorages are designed by an engineer experienced in anchorages and concrete. AS 5216 appears on Hobson's product labels for these codes.
Every XBolt PRO code we carry. Rod sizes are the two threads in the dual thread nut. Approvals from Hobson's declarations of performance (DoP). "Fire rated" is Hobson's label term for the fire resistance assessed in the ETA. Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Installing an XBolt PRO vertical hanger
- Hammer drill a hole of the drill diameter below to at least the hole depth (6mm for the M8/M10 hangers, 8mm for the M10/M12 hanger).
- Remove the dust and debris with a hand pump, compressed air or a vacuum.
- Drive the hanger in with an impact driver (Hobson recommends a cordless impact driver) or a torque wrench, keeping to the maximum installation torque, until the head sits on the concrete. Socket: the XBolt vertical hanger socket (13mm across flats, 1/4 inch drive) for the M8/M10 hangers; the M10/M12 hanger has a 15mm head, so use a 15mm socket.
- Screw the threaded rod into the nut. For the M10/M12 hanger Hobson says the minimum engagement is one rod diameter; the thread length in each half of the nut is 10mm (M8/M10) and 12mm (M10/M12).
- Keep to the minimum concrete thickness, edge distance and spacing below. Once installed the anchor cannot be turned further. Per the ETA, a failed hole is redrilled at least twice its depth away, or closer only if the old hole is filled with high strength mortar and, under shear or angled tension load, the old hole is not in the direction of the load.
XBolt PRO vertical hangers: installation values from ETA-14/0374 Table B1 (carbon steel, sizes 7.5 and 10.5) and Hobson's XBolt PRO vertical hanger data sheets, which agree. Dimensions in mm. Hobson's declarations of performance list the M8/M10 hangers as screw size 7.5 (shown as M6) and the M10/M12 hanger as size 10.5 (shown as M8). The flange stud (EVXMSZF17M100040) is not in these tables: Hobson publishes no installation values for it. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

XBolt PRO working (service) tension loads
The working loads below are the service tension loads in Hobson's declarations of performance (ETA-14/0374, Table C3, carbon steel screws), and they apply only with the conditions in the caption. They are for one anchor in tension and are not a rating for the rod, the nut or the item being hung. Spacing between anchors, edge distance effects, shear, combined loads and fire design are worked out by the services designer or engineer (the ETA says anchorages are designed by an engineer experienced in anchorages and concrete, and Hobson lists its 3DESIGN anchor design software among this range's documents). The flange stud (EVXMSZF17M100040) is not in this table: ask us for its values.
Hobson's data sheets also give AS 5216 design loads for use by an engineer designing to AS 5216; they are compared with factored loads, not used as working loads. Those sheets cover three codes only (EVXMSZ17M100040, EVXMSZ17M100055 and EVXMSF18D120060); ask us for them.
Service tension loads in kN from ETA-14/0374 Table C3 (Hobson declarations of performance 10026, 10032 and 10033): carbon steel screw, design method A, C20/25 to C50/60 concrete, at the embedment shown, installed to the drill, hole depth, torque, concrete thickness, edge distance and spacing values in the installation table above. The ETA gives these loads with their displacements; the M8/M10 hangers are screw size 7.5 and the M10/M12 hanger screw size 10.5. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Threaded rod hangers for timber: Type 17 vertical side hanger
The self-drilling vertical side hanger (MVWMSZSM100050) is a one-piece hanger that drills itself into the side of a timber beam or joist and takes M10 threaded rod (side entry), for pipe hanging, fire protection, electrical conduit and cable tray. It has a 14g Type 17 thread (6.3mm major diameter, 20 TPI), 71mm overall and 50mm embedment, with a 16mm hex.
Install: drive it with a 16mm socket (Hobson's vertical hanger socket, 1/4 inch drive, suits it) at about 1500 rpm until the body is flush with the timber, then screw in the M10 rod clockwise until it is fully engaged. Hobson recommends a cordless impact driver.
Hobson publishes design capacities for it in single shear, below, only with these limits: 50mm embedment, at least 32mm edge distance, 63mm end distance and a 63mm thick member. The joint group (J1 to J6, JD1 to JD6) comes from the timber species, and the category from what the joint does; your designer picks both.
MVWMSZSM100050, design capacity in single shear in newtons (1000N = 1kN), from Hobson's data sheet: calculated to clause 4.3.3.2 of AS 1720.1 for 50+ year load duration. Embedment 50mm, min edge distance 32mm, min end distance 63mm, min member thickness 63mm. Category 1: house joints whose failure would affect no more than 25m2, or secondary elements in other structures. Category 2: primary joints in other structures, or house joints affecting more than 25m2. Category 3: primary joints in essential services or post-disaster structures. PUMA-X panel brace anchor (tilt panel bracing)
Tilt panel bracing is safety-critical: the brace design (brace type, layout, number of anchors and the loads on each) comes from the engineer or the bracing designer, and the anchors are installed and inspected to that design. Hobson's values for the PUMA-X panel brace anchor (MAP88ZDM140115) are below with every condition the sheet attaches; do not use them outside those conditions.
What it is: a torque-controlled expansion anchor with a class 8.8 bolt, a large 30mm hex head, a heavy-duty heat-treated washer (38mm diameter, 3mm thick), a nylon compression ring for fixture clamping, an expansion sleeve and a heat-treated expander cone. It is zinc plated and removable. Hobson had it tested by a NATA-accredited laboratory (Melbourne Testing Services) to AS 3850.1:2024 Appendix A, for static tension, shear, cyclic loading and installation torque.
- Drill a 20mm hole to at least 110mm deep. Embedment depth is 95mm.
- Blow the hole clean of dust and debris.
- Insert the anchor so the bolt head and washer sit firmly on the brace foot (fixture thickness 20mm, fixture hole 21 to 26mm).
- Tighten to 150Nm with a calibrated torque wrench (30mm socket).
- Keep to the minimums: concrete 150mm thick (125mm for slab on ground if drilling breakthrough is permitted), edge distance 300mm, anchor spacing 240mm.
PUMA-X panel brace anchor MAP88ZDM140115, Hobson test results in C20/25 concrete, steel failure decisive. Working load limit = characteristic ultimate strength divided by a factor of safety of 2.25 (AS 3850.1:2015 Table 2.1). Only with: 95mm embedment, 20mm hole 110mm deep, 150Nm torque, min concrete 150mm (125mm slab on ground with breakthrough permitted), min spacing 240mm, and the perpendicular edge distance shown (never under 300mm). For combined tension and shear Hobson gives the check [Ns / (Ru,N / F)]^1.5 + [Vs / (Ru,V / F)]^1.5 <= 1.0 (AS 3850.1:2015 A9.6.3), where Ns and Vs are the unfactored applied tension and shear, Ru,N and Ru,V the characteristic ultimate strengths below, and F = 2.25, with wind loads from AS/NZS 1170.2 or 1170.0 divided by 1.5 first (AS 3850.2:2015 clause 2.5.6). Hobson's engineering team advises on interpreting the results and on inspection to AS 3850.2:2024. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
PUMA-X thin panel anchor, ESAK drop-in and strap toggle
- PUMA-X thin panel anchor (MAP10ZTM120090, M12 x 90, class 10.9, zinc plated, packs of 20): Hobson publishes no data sheet, approval, capacity or installation values for it in the documents we hold. Do not use it for panel bracing or any load unless the engineer's design names it with its values; Hobson publishes none.
- Mungo ESAK drop-in anchor with collar (zinc plated, M8, M10, M12 and M16; Hobson's description gives each as thread x two diameters x length, for example M8 x 13/10 x 30): a drop-in anchor is set in the hole with a setting tool and takes a bolt or threaded rod. Hobson's documents for it hold no ETA, load, edge distance, spacing or concrete thickness values, so ask us for them before designing with it. Our drop-in anchor page has the ranges with published install data.
- Strap toggle wall anchor (MWHDZSTM06, M6, zinc plated, packs of 25): a toggle on a strap for fixing through hollow walls such as plasterboard. Hobson publishes no load data for it; for anything heavy or safety-related on a hollow wall, use a fixing with published loads or the designer's specification. Our hollow wall anchor page covers the rest of the hollow wall range.
Zinc plated or zinc flake silver?
- Zinc plated: about 5 microns, rated low corrosion resistance in Hobson's finish comparison and recommended for indoor and non-corrosive environments. The ETA covers the carbon steel XBolt PRO in dry internal conditions in any case.
- Zinc flake silver: about 10 microns, rated high corrosion resistance, applied without electroplating so it carries no hydrogen embrittlement risk. Hobson lists the zinc flake M10/M12 hanger for data centres without causing zinc whiskers; its zinc whisker article explains that the whiskers grow from electroplated zinc.
- None of these hangers is a stainless or exposed-weather fixing: Hobson's corrosion guide calls for stainless or hot dip galvanising where a fixing is exposed.

Questions
Which threaded rod hanger for a concrete ceiling?
Drill a hole for an XBolt PRO vertical hanger (6mm for M8/M10, 8mm for M10/M12), clean it, drive the hanger in until the head sits on the concrete without exceeding its maximum torque (15Nm or 25Nm), then screw the threaded rod into the nut. Keep to the minimum edge distance, spacing and concrete thickness in the table, and work to the services designer's anchor layout.
What drill size for an XBolt PRO vertical hanger?
6mm for the M8/M10 hangers (hole depth 50mm for the 40mm hanger, 65mm for the 55mm) and 8mm for the M10/M12 hanger (hole depth 70mm). Hammer drilling only.
Can XBolt PRO hangers be used for fire sprinklers?
Hobson lists fire sprinklers among their uses, and the six XBolt PRO hanger codes with Hobson declarations of performance have fire resistance assessed under their ETA; we make no fire claim for the flange stud. The sprinkler system designer specifies the hanger, its spacing and loads; fire design under the ETA is done by an engineer.
What is the difference between seismic C1 and C2?
Both are ETA seismic performance categories; C2 is the more stringent assessment. Our M10/M12 XBolt PRO hangers are declared C1 and C2; the M8/M10 hangers are C1.
Which threaded rod hanger for a timber beam?
With the Type 17 vertical side hanger: drive it into the side of the beam with a 16mm socket until the body is flush, then screw in M10 rod. Hobson's design capacities for it apply at 50mm embedment (fully driven), in a member at least 63mm thick, with 32mm edge and 63mm end distance, for the joint group and category your designer sets.
What is a panel brace anchor?
An anchor that holds the foot of a temporary brace to the slab or panel while tilt-up or precast panels are propped. Our PUMA-X panel brace anchor is M14 x 115, tested to AS 3850.1:2024 Appendix A, installed at 150Nm in a 20mm hole. The bracing layout and anchor loads come from the engineer's or bracing designer's plan.
What is the working load of the PUMA-X brace anchor?
Hobson gives working load limits (tested ultimate values divided by a factor of safety of 2.25) of 17.1kN in tension at a 300mm edge distance or more, and in shear 43.7kN at a perpendicular edge distance of 350mm or more and 37.6kN at 300mm (never under 300mm). These hold only in C20/25 concrete, at 95mm embedment in a 20mm hole 110mm deep, tightened to 150Nm, with min 150mm concrete (125mm slab on ground with breakthrough permitted), 240mm spacing and a 20mm fixture. Combined tension and shear uses Hobson's interaction check with unfactored applied loads (see the table above). The bracing design and the anchor loads come from the engineer or bracing designer.
