About the Tilt Panel Fitting

Tilt panel fittings connect tilt-up and precast concrete panels once they are standing: joining panels side by side, making corner connections, and fixing steel I-beam columns to panels and dados. Hot dip galvanised flat joiner plates (stitching plates) and an angle joiner plate each have two slots for M20, clips with bend (tilt panel cleats) have one M20 slot in galvanised or plain steel, and a 16mm brace shear pin adjusts the height of tilt panel props. These are connection fittings, not lifting inserts. Choose the type and size above; the guide below covers sizes and what Hobson publishes about strength.

Also called tilt panel joiner plates, stitching plates or tilt panel cleats.

What tilt panel fittings are for

These are the steel plates and clips used to connect tilt-up and precast concrete panels once they are standing, plus a shear pin for the props that hold them while they are braced. Hobson lists each one for a specific job:

  • Flat joiner plate (J1), also known as a stitching plate: panel-to-panel connections in precast concrete. Two long slots suit M20.
  • Angle joiner plate (A1): right angle corner connections to a panel in precast construction. Two long slotted holes for broad adjustment, suiting M20.
  • Clip with bend (T1), also known as a tilt panel cleat or bracket: fixing upright structural steel I-beam columns to concrete tilt panels and concrete dados. One slot suiting M20.
  • Tilt panel brace shear pin (16mm): used in tilt panel props to adjust their height.

Connection fittings, not lifting inserts

None of these fittings is a lifting insert, and Hobson publishes no lifting rating, working load limit or connection capacity for the joiner plates, angle joiner or clips. Panels are lifted with the lifting system the panel designer specifies, and every panel connection (the fitting, its bolts or anchors, their size, position and number, and any welding) comes from the engineer's connection design. Use these fittings where that design calls for them.

Joiner plate and clip sizes

Every plate and clip we carry, with the dimensions from Hobson's tilt panel data sheets. Select a row to open that fitting in the selector.

Size is as shown in the selector, in mm: length x width x thickness (angle joiner: length x height x width x thickness). Slot = A x B on Hobson's drawing (slot length x slot width). C is as Hobson's drawing measures it for that fitting. Pack is the minimum order quantity. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Tilt panel brace shear pin

The brace shear pin (QPPCSYSP-16) is a bent 16mm pin that Hobson lists for use in tilt panel props to adjust their height. It is zinc yellow passivate, hardened to 200HV, and Hobson lists it against AS 3850. Hobson says the increased hardness gives a higher shear failure point, and that a test certificate or report for it can be downloaded from its website.

Hobson's data sheet gives an ultimate single shear capacity of 60kN. That is a failure value, not a working load: the sheet gives no working load limit, factor of safety or test conditions with it. The prop and the bracing (brace type, layout and loads) are designed by the engineer or bracing designer, and the prop maker's instructions say which pin a prop takes. Use the pin only where that design and the prop maker call for it.

QPPCSYSP-16 dimensions in mm and the one strength figure Hobson publishes, from Hobson's Tilt Panel Brace Shear Pin data sheet (250415). Packs of 20. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Galvanised, plain or zinc yellow?

  • Hot dip galvanised (joiner plates, angle joiner and most clips): about 50 microns of zinc, rated high corrosion resistance and recommended for long term outdoor use in Hobson's finish comparison. Hobson's corrosion guide accepts hot dip galvanising for exposed steel in the low, coastal and industrial zones; in the sea spray zone it calls for stainless steel, and within 2m of a pool edge for 316 stainless. We don't carry these fittings in stainless.
  • Plain steel (the PPCMPT1 clip): no coating, supplied lightly oiled. Hobson's corrosion guide sets zinc plating as the minimum even for enclosed fixings in the lowest zones, so use the plain clip only where the design specifies its protection, such as paint.
  • Zinc yellow passivate (brace shear pin): about 5 microns, rated low corrosion resistance and recommended for low-corrosion environments or temporary fixing, which suits a pin that lives in temporary props.
  • A newly galvanised plate can look duller than older stock. Hobson notes that the brightness of a galvanised coating has no effect on its performance; coating mass sets its life.

Before you order

  1. Check the fitting type, size and finish on the engineer's connection drawing against the table above.
  2. All the plates and clips have slots to suit M20, so order the M20 bolts, anchors and washers the drawing specifies with them.
  3. Joiner plates and the angle joiner come in packs of 5, clips in packs of 10 and brace shear pins in packs of 20.
  4. Order panel shims for levelling at the same time if the job needs them.

Questions

What is a tilt panel joiner plate?

A flat steel plate that connects two precast or tilt-up concrete panels. Ours are hot dip galvanised, 300 x 150 x 12mm or 350 x 100 x 12mm, with two slots to suit M20, in packs of 5. The connection design sets which plate, which fixings and where they go.

What is a stitching plate?

Another name for a flat panel joiner plate, used to connect one concrete panel to the next. Hobson lists its J1 flat joiner plates as also known as stitching plates.

What is a tilt panel cleat used for?

Hobson's clip with bend (also known as a tilt panel cleat or bracket) is listed for fixing upright structural steel I-beam columns to concrete tilt panels and concrete dados. It has one slot suiting M20 and comes in 150 x 75 x 10mm (galvanised or plain) and 200 x 75 x 12mm (galvanised).

What is a brace shear pin?

A hardened 16mm bent pin used in tilt panel props to adjust their height. Hobson gives an ultimate single shear capacity of 60kN for it. That is a failure value, not a working load, so the prop and bracing design and the prop maker's instructions decide where it is used.

Can I lift panels with these fittings?

No. They are connection fittings, not lifting inserts, and Hobson publishes no lifting rating for them. Panels are lifted with the lifting system the panel designer specifies.

How much load can a joiner plate take?

Hobson publishes no capacity for its joiner plates, angle joiner or clips. All of them have slots to suit M20; the engineer designs each connection, including the bolts or anchors, and specifies the fitting.
