About the Rivet Nuts (Rivnuts & Nutserts)
Rivet nuts, also called rivnuts or nutserts, set from one side like a pop rivet to give a strong thread in sheet, tube and box section that is too thin to tap or has no access behind, on vehicle bodies, trailers, canopies and steel fabrication. They come with a flat head or a reduced (near-flush) head on a knurled round body, or with a full hex body, in zinc plated steel, aluminium or 316 stainless, from M3 to M12. What rivet nuts are for
A rivet nut is a threaded insert that is set from one side, like a pop rivet. It gives you a load-bearing female thread in sheet, panels, tube and extrusions that are too thin to tap or where you cannot get a nut behind. Rivet nuts are widely used on vehicle bodies and chassis, trailers, canopies, steel sheet and fabrication.
Which rivet nut?
- Flat head, round knurled body: the general purpose rivet nut. The flat head spreads the load on the sheet and the knurls grip the hole so it does not spin.
- Reduced head (also called countersunk, flush or thin sheet head): a low-profile head that sits almost flush with the sheet.
- Full hex body: fits a hex-punched hole so it cannot turn, for higher torque.
- Zinc plated steel for general work, aluminium for aluminium sheet, 316 stainless for marine and corrosive conditions.
Rivet nut hole sizes and grip range
Drill the hole to the size for the thread, and choose the length whose grip range covers the thickness of your sheet. In the zinc plated flat head range each size comes in a short and a long length for thin and thicker material.

How to fit a rivet nut
- Drill a clean hole of the right size and remove the burr.
- Screw the rivet nut onto the mandrel of a rivet nut tool (our hand kit, or a drill attachment in a cordless drill; our tools cover M3 to M10), head against the tool nose.
- Push it into the hole until the head sits flat on the sheet.
- Operate the tool: it pulls the thread toward the head, collapsing the body into a bulge behind the sheet that clamps it tight.
- Unwind the mandrel. The thread is ready for a bolt or screw straight away.

Yes. Rivet nut, rivnut, nutsert, blind nut and threaded insert all describe the same one-sided threaded insert.
What size hole for an M6 rivet nut?
9mm for our M6 round body rivet nuts. M4 takes 6mm, M5 7mm, M8 11mm, M10 13mm and M12 16mm.
What is grip range on a rivet nut?
The range of sheet thickness the rivet nut can clamp. Choose the length whose grip range covers your material, for example 0.5 to 3.0mm for a short M6.
Why use a hex rivet nut?
A hex body in a hex-punched hole cannot spin, so it takes more tightening torque than a round body rivet nut.
Which rivet nut for aluminium?
Aluminium rivet nuts, which avoid corrosion between different metals. Use 316 stainless rivet nuts in stainless sheet.
