MDC Laser Beton Diamond Blade

A laser welded segmented blade for concrete and masonry

Beton is German for concrete, which is the Laser Beton's main job. Mungo, whose blades Hobson distributes, builds it with laser welded diamond segments for long durability, for angle grinders (Mungo: grinding machines) and wall chasers, used dry. Mungo lists it as oSa certified and complying with EN 13236.

Mungo's applications for it are concrete, masonry, natural stone, rock and red bricks: cutting pavers, bricks, blocks, kerbs and slabs, and chasing walls for conduit with a wall chaser.

Laser Beton size: 125mm with a 22.2mm bore

What it cuts: Mungo's compatibility chart

On Mungo's three-step chart (recommended, well suited, suitable) the Laser Beton has no recommended rating; it is rated on 17 of the 20 materials:

• •Well suited: reinforced concrete, brick, clinker brick, vertically perforated (cored) brick, cement fibre board and concrete agglomerate.
• •Suitable: natural quartz stone, basalt and porphyry, granite, marble (natural stone only: do not cut engineered stone, including engineered 'quartz'), sandstone, sand-lime brick, pebble stone plates, aerated concrete (Ytong), terracotta tile, ceramic products, concrete tile and clay tile.
• •Not rated for: ceramic tile, sandware and facade elements. Use the MDC Viper or Cobra for ceramic tiles.

Laser Beton, Power M, Cobra or Viper?

• •MDC Laser Beton: laser welded segments for long durability. Well suited for reinforced concrete and brick, suitable for stone and sandstone. 125mm, for grinders and wall chasers.
• •MDC Power M: M-shaped laser welded segments for an extra long durability and an ultrafast cutting speed. Mungo's recommended blade for reinforced concrete, brick, clinker and cored brick, so for mostly concrete and brick it is the higher rated choice. Not rated for marble or sandstone. 125 and 230mm.
• •MDC Cobra: Mungo's recommended blade for granite, marble, natural quartz stone, ceramic products and concrete and clay roof tiles; suitable for sandstone, the same rating as the Laser Beton. 125 and 230mm.
• •MDC Viper: Mungo's recommended blade for ceramic tile and sandware, and for natural quartz stone, basalt and porphyry; well suited for granite and marble. 125mm, grinders only.
• •Mungo DS500: a 230mm blade that Mungo labels for concrete and building materials. It is not on the compatibility chart.
• •Aerated concrete (Ytong): the Laser Beton and Power M are rated suitable; the Cobra and Viper are not rated for it.

Cutting concrete and brick safely with the Laser Beton

Mungo's sheet gives no speed figure, so go by the maximum speed marked on the blade. The steps below are general good practice for any diamond blade on an angle grinder or wall chaser.

1. Fit the blade with the angle grinder or wall chaser unplugged, the guard on and the rotation arrow matching the tool.
2. Compare speeds: the blade's marked maximum must not be below the tool's.
3. Run it dry and let it cut at its own pace, without forcing, twisting or side-loading.
4. When chasing walls or cutting pavers, brace the work so the cut cannot close on the blade or the offcut drop away.
5. Wear eye, hearing and respiratory protection. Cutting concrete, brick, stone and tiles makes respirable crystalline silica dust; use on-tool dust extraction or other controls, and respiratory protection, as Safe Work Australia's silica guidance sets out.
6. Replace the blade once it is cracked, out of round, or has damaged or missing segments.

Natural stone, not engineered stone

The Laser Beton's stone ratings are for natural stone only. Never cut engineered stone (benchtops, panels or slabs, including "quartz"): Australia has banned its manufacture, supply, processing and installation since 1 July 2024 (Safe Work Australia), and existing engineered stone may be worked only under strict controls.
