What a metal cutting disc does

A cutting disc (cut off wheel) is a thin abrasive disc, used on an angle grinder, that slices through metal with its edge. Mungo lists the thin MPC Pro Cut range (1.0 to 1.9mm) as optimised for cutting steel and stainless steel, and lists these features for both ranges:

• •Made for fast, comfortable cutting with a long life.
• •Burr free cutting, which cuts down the work after the cut.
• •Free of iron, sulphur and chlorine, which Mungo says prevents contamination of stainless steel material.

Thin or thick cutting disc?

• •Thin, 1.0mm (115 and 125mm) and 1.9mm (230mm): Mungo lists them for cutting sheet, small diameter profiles and bars. Typical jobs are sheet metal, threaded rod, bolts, light angle and tube.
• •Thick, 2.5mm (115 and 125mm) and 3.0mm (230mm): Mungo lists them for cutting profiles, solid materials and thicker sheet, such as heavier angle, flat bar and solid bar.
• •Diameter: fit the disc your grinder and its guard are made for, 115mm on a 115mm grinder, 125mm on a 125mm grinder, 230mm on a 230mm grinder.

Cutting disc, grinding disc or diamond blade?

• •MPC Pro Cut cutting disc (this page): thin, cuts metal with its edge; Mungo optimises the 1.0 to 1.9mm range for steel and stainless steel.
• •MPG Pro Grind grinding disc: 6.5mm thick, for deburring, weld cleaning, surface cleaning and dressing angles and corners on metal.
• •Diamond blades (MDC Power M and others): for cutting concrete, brick and other hard building materials, not steel.
• •Threaded rod cutter: for cutting threaded rod cleanly without a grinder; see the rod cutters in our bolting tools.

How to use a cutting disc safely

These steps are general safe practice for abrasive cutting discs, not instructions from Mungo's sheet, which lists the disc's features and sizes only.

1. Check the speed. Mungo's data sheet does not give a maximum operating speed for the MPC Pro Cut, so read it on the disc or its label and make sure it is at least the no load speed of your grinder.
2. Fit the disc with the grinder maker's flanges and the guard in place, and only on a grinder made for that diameter and the 22.23mm bore.
3. Wear eye and face protection, hearing protection and gloves, and keep sparks away from anything that can burn.
4. Clamp the work. Let the disc reach full speed before it touches the metal, then cut straight without forcing, twisting or bending the disc in the cut.
5. Cut with the edge only. A cutting disc is not made for grinding with its face: use a grinding disc for that.
6. Check each disc before use and throw out one that is chipped, cracked or has been dropped. Store discs dry and flat.
