MDC Cobra Diamond Blade

A diamond blade for tiles, roof tiles and stone

Mungo makes the MDC Cobra (distributed by Hobson) for stone and tiles, and describes it as a persistent diamond blade for long durability, a high cutting speed and silent working. It fits angle grinders (grinding machines) and wall chasers, runs dry without water cooling, carries the oSa mark and is listed by Mungo as complying with EN 13236.

Mungo's applications for it are natural stone, rock, tiles and roof tiles, so it is the Mungo blade to reach for when cutting terracotta and concrete roof tiles, stone pavers and cladding, granite and marble, and tiles with a grinder.

Tile cutting blade sizes: 125mm and 230mm

What it cuts: Mungo's compatibility chart

Mungo's chart ranks each material for the Cobra as recommended, well suited or suitable:

• •Recommended: natural quartz stone, basalt and porphyry, granite, marble, ceramic products, concrete tile and clay tile.
• •Well suited: clinker brick, brick, vertically perforated (cored) brick, pebble stone plates, concrete agglomerate, sand-lime brick, sandware and ceramic tile.
• •Suitable: reinforced concrete, cement fibre board, facade elements, sandstone and terracotta tile.
• •Not rated for: aerated concrete (Ytong).

Cobra, Power M, Viper, Laser Beton or DS500?

• •MDC Cobra: the Mungo blade for stone and roof tiles. Recommended for granite, marble, natural quartz stone and basalt, concrete and clay roof tiles and ceramic products; well suited for ceramic tile and brick. 125 and 230mm.
• •MDC Power M: M-shaped laser welded segments for long life and fast cutting. Recommended for reinforced concrete and brick, so it is the concrete and masonry blade; Mungo does not rate it for marble, sandstone or ceramic tile. 125 and 230mm.
• •MDC Viper: a superfine blade for a high cutting speed and quiet running. Mungo's recommended blade for ceramic tile and sandware, and well suited for granite, marble and terracotta. 125mm.
• •MDC Laser Beton: laser welded segments for long durability, for concrete, masonry, natural stone and red brick. We carry it in 125mm.
• •Mungo DS500: a 230mm diamond blade with a 22mm bore. It is not on Mungo's compatibility chart; its label (in Hobson's product photo) reads concrete and building materials. See the DS500 page in the related links for what its label says.
• •For ceramic wall and floor tiles, the Viper is Mungo's recommended blade and the Cobra is well suited; for roof tiles and hard stone, the Cobra is the recommended one.

Cutting tiles and stone safely with the Cobra

1. Unplug the grinder before fitting the blade, keep the guard on and match the blade's rotation arrow to the grinder.
2. The blade's marked maximum speed must be at least the grinder's speed.
3. Cut dry, as Mungo intends, and let the blade do the work: no forcing, twisting or side-loading.
4. Support roof tiles and stone fully so the cut cannot pinch the blade and offcuts cannot fall mid-cut.
5. Wear eye, hearing and respiratory protection. Cutting stone, tiles, brick and concrete makes crystalline silica dust; use on-tool dust extraction or other controls as Safe Work Australia's free guidance on silica sets out.
6. Retire a blade that is cracked, out of round or worn through its diamond rim.

Natural stone, not engineered stone

Do not cut engineered stone benchtops, panels or slabs (including those sold as "quartz"): they have been banned in Australia since 1 July 2024 (Safe Work Australia). The quartz, granite and marble on Mungo's chart are natural stones.
