About the Flat Washer
Flat washers sit under a bolt head or nut to spread the load and stop the nut scouring the surface, on timber framing, fencing, steelwork and machinery repairs. They come in mild steel (zinc plated, plain, hot dip galvanised, zinc yellow or black), 304 and 316 stainless (DIN 125A, DIN 433 and Hobson sizes), Bumax high strength stainless, brass, and natural or UV stable black nylon including shoulder washers, plus hardened AS 1237 and Sampson ASTM F436 washers, from M2 to M100 and 3/32 to 3 inch. What flat washers do
Hobson describes a standard washer as a thin plate, normally round, with a hole in the centre, used for two main reasons:
- To stop the nut scouring or scratching the surface it bears on as it is turned.
- To increase the bearing surface of the bolt or nut, spreading the load of the fastener over a larger area so the surface does not deform.
Which flat washer: steel, stainless, nylon, brass or hardened?
- Zinc plated mild steel: the everyday washer for indoor and non-corrosive conditions.
- Hot dip galvanised mild steel: for long term outdoor work, with galvanised bolts and nuts.
- Zinc yellow passivate (DIN 125A) and zinc black passivate: zinc yellow has more corrosion resistance than clear zinc plating; Hobson lists black zinc washers for exposed suspended services, automotive, forklifts, electronics, furniture and lighting, where they match the colour of the equipment.
- Stainless steel washers: 304 for general corrosion resistance and 316 near the sea, in Hobson's own sizes, DIN 125A, and DIN 433 (a smaller outside diameter than DIN 125A, designed for use with cheese head screws). Bumax 88 and Bumax 109 are high strength stainless: Hobson's Bumax data sheet says their strength properties correspond to 8.8 and 10.9 carbon steel fasteners respectively.
- Nylon washers: a barrier between dissimilar metals, electrical insulation between conductive parts, protection for a bearing surface, and absorbing shocks and vibration. Black nylon has carbon black added for UV and outdoor weathering.
- Nylon shoulder washers (top hat washers): a washer with a sleeve that sits in the hole, where the fastener has to be insulated from the base material.
- Brass washers: in metric and imperial sizes; Hobson's brass washer sheet lists both to AS 1237.
- Hardened washers: Sampson ASTM F436 and F436M washers for high tensile bolts, AS 1237 hardened galvanised washers, and 300 HV zinc flake washers that Hobson lists for property class 10.9 bolts.

Washer sizes explained: M8, M10, M12 and imperial
A metric washer is named for the bolt it fits: an M10 washer goes on an M10 (10mm) bolt, an M8 washer on an M8 bolt and an M12 washer on an M12 bolt. Its outside diameter (OD) and thickness then vary with the range: for example our zinc plated M10 is 22.5 x 2mm, while the 316 stainless DIN 125A M10 is 20 x 2mm. Pick a bigger OD to spread the load further, or a mudguard washer for a much larger one.
Imperial washers are named by bolt diameter in inches, then OD in inches and thickness as a gauge number, so 3/8 x 3/4 x 16g is a washer for a 3/8 inch bolt, 3/4 inch across and 16 gauge thick. Hobson's washer gauge chart converts the gauges used in our range (a 15g washer in our range is not on the chart):

Hardened washers are through-hardened steel for high tensile bolting. From Hobson's sheets: the zinc plated HEC F436M Sampson washers suit high strength metric fasteners up to class 10.9 and ASTM A354 and F3125 fasteners; the zinc flake F436M Sampson washers suit bolts and set screws up to property class 10.9; the zinc flake ISO 7089 300 HV washers are for property class 10.9 bolts; and the weathering steel F436M washers are for weathering steel work.

Nylon shoulder washers (top hat washers)
A shoulder washer has a flat washer face with a sleeve (the shoulder) that sits inside the hole, so the bolt does not touch the base material. Hobson lists the black UV stable shoulder washers for outdoor use where the fastener must be insulated from the base material. The size is the bolt; the heights are the overall height H of the washer.

Imperial flat washer sizes
Imperial zinc plated, stainless, brass and nylon washers, one row per bolt size. For the metal washers the OD is in inches and the thickness is a gauge (see the gauge chart above); nylon thickness is in inches. We also carry a 1/4 inch Bumax 88 washer.
Hobson's brass washer sheet gives the imperial brass thicknesses in mm, and a few differ from the gauges in our product data: 1/4 x 9/16 is 1.1mm on the sheet against 19g, 3/8 x 3/4 is 1.5mm against 16g, and 3/8 x 7/8 is 1.1mm against 18g.

Sampson hardened washers (imperial)
Sampson ASTM F436 washers are hardened: Hobson lists the plain ones for bolts and set screws up to grade 8, the zinc plated for grade 8, the hot dip galvanised for grade 5 and above and HDG imperial stud bolts, and the zinc plated and Xylan green for stud bolts in the oil and gas industries.

The zinc plated, galvanised and Xylan green sheets give different dimensions at some sizes (for example 1/2 inch: 27.8 x 3.5mm plain, 27.8 x 2.5mm zinc plated, 27.8 x 2.5 to 4.5mm galvanised, 27 x 3.5mm Xylan green), and Hobson publishes no sheet dimensions here for the zinc yellow and Xylan blue washers, so check the selector for the finish you choose. Washer finishes and materials
From Hobson's finish comparison, stainless steel guidance and nylon data:
- Zinc plated: 5 micron zinc with a clear passivate, for indoor and non-corrosive conditions.
- Zinc yellow passivate: 5 micron zinc with a yellow passivate, more corrosion resistant than zinc plated, for low corrosion conditions or temporary fixing.
- Hot dip galvanised: a 50 micron coating with high corrosion resistance, for long term outdoor work. Newer galvanising is a duller grey than it used to be; Hobson notes the brightness has no effect on performance.
- Zinc flake silver: a 10 micron coating with high corrosion resistance and no risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
- Plain: no coating, supplied lightly oiled to stop rust in the packet.
- 304 and 316 stainless: 316 has molybdenum added for better resistance near the sea. Neither 304 nor 316 is made to sit in seawater, and even 316 can visibly corrode where salt spray is left to build up.
- Nylon: Hobson calls PA6.6 (nylon 66) the standard polymer in its nylon range, and its black UV stable washers are nylon 66 with carbon black added. Hobson's nylon properties sheet gives PA6.6 a working temperature of -30 to +100°C; that figure is for the PA6.6 material, not a rating of a particular washer. Nylon absorbs moisture from the air, which makes it less stiff and more impact resistant.
Fitting tips
- Put a washer under the part you turn, usually the nut, so it does not score the surface as it is tightened.
- Use a washer under the bolt head as well where the surface is soft or the hole is oversize, to spread the load.
- Match the washer to the bolt: hardened washers with high tensile bolts, galvanised with galvanised bolts outdoors, stainless with stainless.
- Where two different metals meet, a nylon washer between them acts as a barrier.

What size is an M8, M10 or M12 washer?
It depends on the range. Our zinc plated mild steel washers are 19 x 1.6mm (M8), 22.5 x 2mm (M10) and 27.5 x 2.25mm (M12); the 316 stainless DIN 125A washers are 16 x 1.6mm, 20 x 2mm and 24 x 2.5mm. The common sizes are side by side in the table above, and every size is in the selector.
What are nylon washers used for?
As a barrier between dissimilar metals, for electrical insulation between conductive parts, to protect a surface, and to absorb shocks and vibration. Use black UV stable nylon outdoors.
304 or 316 stainless steel washers?
304 for general use, 316 near the coast: it has molybdenum added for better resistance near the sea. Neither is made to sit in seawater, and salt spray left to build up can mark even 316.
What does 16g mean on a washer?
The thickness, as a gauge number. Hobson's chart gives 16 gauge as 1.588mm and 14 gauge as 1.994mm. The full list is in the gauge chart above.
What is a Sampson washer?
Hobson's Sampson washers are hardened flat washers, 38 to 45 HRC for most finishes. Most are made to ASTM F436 (imperial) or F436M (metric), and Hobson lists them for high tensile bolts.
What is the difference between DIN 125A and DIN 433 washers?
DIN 433 washers have a smaller outside diameter than DIN 125A and are designed for use with cheese head screws. For example, a 316 DIN 433 M10 washer is 18mm across against 20mm for DIN 125A.
