Key things to remember

The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.

  • How it works: the washers are used in pairs. When the bolt is tightened their serrations embed in the mating surfaces, and because the cam angle is greater than the thread pitch, a wedge effect stops the bolt rotating loose.
  • Original washers: for bolts up to property class 12.9 (steel) and A4-80 (stainless), locking not affected by lubrication, reusable depending on use. Steel washers (EN 1.7182) from M3 to M130 and stainless (EN 1.4404) from M3 to M80; enlarged SP washers suit large holes, soft materials and flanged bolts.
  • Steel washers have a minimum of 1,000 hours in the ISO 9227 salt spray test.
  • X-series washers add a spring effect to the wedge lock, to hold preload through settlement, thermal cycling, paint or powder coat and short clamp lengths; for class 8.8 and 10.9 bolts, -40 to 150°C.
  • SC washers are made for structural steelwork with HV bolt sets to EN 14399, replacing a standard EN 14399-6 plain washer, in sizes M12 to M36, covered by approval Z-14.4-629 and ETA-20/0010.
  • Wheel nuts for flat-faced steel rims on trucks, buses, trailers and off-road machinery, M16 to M24, each with a pair of wedge locking washers attached.
  • Each pair of washers is laser marked for traceability; the brochure lists approvals from DIBt, DNV GL, EBA, TUV and Lloyd's Register.
