Nylon Fastener Chemical Resistance Chart: PA6, PC, PVDF, PP, POM and PE
A one-page colour-coded chart showing how seven fastener plastics resist 25 substances, from cold water to oil of turpentine. Each cell is rated good resistance, limited resistance or not resistant, and the last row gives water absorption to ASTM D570.
What this covers
- Water and acids
- Bases and halogens
- Solvents and hydrocarbons
- Petrol and oils
- Water absorption
Applies to Threaded Rod (Allthread), Hex Bolts & Set Screws, Hex Bolt Head Cover (Bolt Cap), Machine Screw, Wing Screw, Dome Nut, Hex Flange Nut, Hex Nut, Wing Nut, Socket Head Cap Screw, Grub Screws (Socket Set Screws), Cup / Finishing Washer and 6 more.
Key things to remember
The essentials from this document in plain words. Check the full document before you rely on a figure.
- Plastics covered: PA6 6.6/66 polyamide nylon, polycarbonate (PC), PVDF, polypropylene (PP), acetal (POM), and low and high density polyethylene (PE-LD, PE-HD).
- PA6 nylon has good resistance to cold water, diluted potassium, inorganic bases, hydrocarbons, alcohols, ester, ketone, ether, aromatic hydrocarbons, petrol and mineral oils.
- PA6 nylon is not resistant to diluted, concentrated, oxidised or hydrofluoric acids, or to dry halogen. Its resistance to hot water is limited.
- PVDF has good resistance to diluted, oxidised and hydrofluoric acids, and to most of the substances on the chart.
- Water absorption: PA6 1.3 to 1.9%, PC 0.1 to 0.2%, PVDF 0.03%, PP 0.01 to 0.03%, POM 0.22 to 0.25%, PE-LD and PE-HD under 0.01%.
Who it helps: Anyone choosing a nylon or plastic fastener for contact with chemicals, fuels or water.
