About the Plasterboard Screw

Plasterboard screws, also called gyprock or drywall screws, fix plasterboard walls and ceilings to timber and steel studs: the bugle head pulls the sheet flush without tearing the paper. They have a needle point, from 6 to 10 gauge and 20 to 100mm long, as collated strips for auto-feed screw guns (black phosphate or zinc yellow) or as loose screws (zinc yellow or with a Dover White head). Choose the size, format and length above; the guide below covers coarse and fine thread, lengths and fixing.

Also called gyprock screws, drywall screws, plaster screws or bugle screws.

Features

  • Bugle head sinks paper-tight
  • Sharp needle point
  • For timber and light-steel studs
  • Phosphate and zinc finishes

Applications

  • Plasterboard to timber
  • Plasterboard to steel stud
  • Ceiling and wall lining

Bugle head screws: what makes a plasterboard screw different

A plasterboard screw has a sharp needle point that starts straight into the board and through to the frame, and a bugle head: a curved underside that pulls the screw flush with the surface without tearing the paper facing. A flush, intact surface is what lets you set the screw heads with compound and get a smooth finish. Every plasterboard screw on this page has a bugle head, which is why they are often just called bugle screws or bugle head screws.

They fix plasterboard wall linings and ceilings to timber or steel frames, and also fix oriented strand board (OSB) to wall studs and ceilings.

Coarse or fine thread gyprock screws?

The size is gauge and threads per inch (TPI): a 6-18 is a 6 gauge screw with 18 threads in every 25.4mm of thread. 6 gauge is 3.5mm across the thread, 8 gauge 4.2mm and 10 gauge 4.8mm.

  • Coarse thread: up to 16 TPI by the maker's definition, generally used for timber. That covers the 6-09, 7-9, 8-9 and 10-8 (8 or 9 TPI) and the 7-16, 8-15 and 10-15 (15 or 16 TPI). The maker's data sheet lists the 6-09 for fixing plasterboard wall lining to timber.
  • Fine thread: over 16 TPI. Our fine thread plasterboard screw is the 6-18, which the maker's data sheet lists for plasterboard wall lining to timber or thin steel, so it is the one to use on light steel studs and furring channel.

Plasterboard screw sizes

Plasterboard screw length is measured from the top of the head, because the bugle head sinks into the board. Choose a length that passes through the board and any packing and well into the stud or batten. On steel framing, at least three threads should come through the steel for full holding power.

Every plasterboard screw we carry, smallest to largest. Lengths in mm, measured from the top of the head. Thread type uses the maker's definition: coarse up to 16 TPI, fine over 16 TPI. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Collated or loose?

  • Collated: screws held in strips of 50 for auto-feed collated screw guns, 1,000 to a box and sold in packs of 5,000, for high-volume, rapid fixing. Available in 6-09 and 6-18, 25, 32 and 41mm.
  • Loose: in boxes of 1,000 (500 for the 10-8 x 50mm and 10-15 x 100mm), for a screwdriver or screw gun with a Phillips #2 bit.

Black phosphate, zinc yellow or painted head?

  • Black phosphate: drills better and installs faster than zinc yellow, bonds better with the topping compound, and the black heads are easy to spot after fixing. Our collated 6-09 and 6-18 screws come in black phosphate.
  • Zinc yellow: a thin zinc coating with a yellow passivate, recommended for low-corrosion conditions. Plasterboard screws are for dry, internal linings.
  • Dover White painted head: zinc yellow screws with the head painted in COLORBOND Dover White, a white head colour.

How to drive plasterboard screws

  1. Use a cordless screwdriver or screw gun set at 3,000 to 4,500 RPM with a Phillips #2 bit. The maker does not recommend impact drivers.
  2. Hold the screw square to the board and keep firm, steady pressure while it drives.
  3. Stop when the head sits just below the surface without breaking the paper. Take care not to overtighten.
  4. For collated screws, load the strip into an auto-feed collated screw gun.

Questions

What are bugle screws?

Screws with a bugle head: a curved, trumpet shaped underside that pulls the head down flush without tearing the paper on plasterboard. Every screw on this page is a bugle head plasterboard screw. Bugle heads are also used on Type 17 bugle batten screws for roof battens (on our batten and decking screws page) and on some tek screws for steel.

Are gyprock screws the same as plasterboard screws?

Yes. Gyprock is a brand of plasterboard, and gyprock screws, drywall screws and plaster screws all mean needle point bugle head screws for fixing plasterboard.

What length plasterboard screws should I use?

Long enough to pass through the board and any packing and well into the frame. Length is measured from the top of the head. Our collated screws come in 25, 32 and 41mm, and loose screws from 20 to 100mm. On steel studs, at least three threads should come through the steel.

Coarse or fine thread for plasterboard?

The maker lists the coarse 6-09 for plasterboard to timber, and the fine 6-18 for timber or thin steel. On light steel studs, use the 6-18. By the maker's definition coarse thread is up to 16 TPI and fine is over 16 TPI.

What bit do I use for plasterboard screws?

A Phillips #2 bit. The maker recommends a cordless screwdriver at 3,000 to 4,500 RPM, not an impact driver.

Black or zinc plasterboard screws?

Black phosphate drills faster, bonds better with topping compound and is easy to see after fixing. Zinc yellow suits low-corrosion, dry internal work too. Both are in the selector.

What are collated plasterboard screws?

Screws held in strips of 50 that feed automatically through a collated screw gun, for fast high-volume fixing. Ours are sold in packs of 5,000.

Where can I buy plasterboard screws in Adelaide?

Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have them delivered to site.
