Foam Dispenser Gun
Dispenser guns for gun-grade PU foam: a disposable light duty gun and the Mungo MPP-K and MPP-M trade guns.
About the Foam Dispenser Gun
An expanding foam gun screws onto a can of gun grade foam and meters the bead, so foam goes exactly where you want it around door and window frames, penetrations and gaps, with less waste and clean-up. We carry a disposable gun (MPP-H, packs of 2), the Mungo MPP-K trade gun in nylon and metal, and the MPP-M heavy duty metal gun. Choose the gun above; the guide below covers fitting a can, setting the flow and cleaning the gun so it lasts.
Also called spray foam gun or PU foam gun.
Features
- Screws onto gun-grade foam cans
- Trigger-metered bead
- Swap empty cans straight away so foam does not set in the adaptor; clean with PU foam cleaner
Applications
- Door and window installation
- Gap filling and sealing
- Insulation
Why use an expanding foam gun?
Gun grade expanding foam comes in a can that screws onto a dispenser gun. The trigger and the flow screw at the back of the gun meter the bead, so the foam goes exactly where you want it. Hobson's gun grade XFOAM PRO sheet lists the benefits as more accurate dosing with the gun, less cleaning and quick can replacement, and gun grade foam expands very little after it goes on, so you use less and trim less.
Hand-held foam has its own straw nozzle and does not need a gun; it suits the odd job. If you foam windows, doors and penetrations every week, a gun and gun grade cans are the trade way to do it.
Which foam gun?
- Disposable gun: for a one-off job, or as a spare on site. Sold in packs of 2.
- MPP-K trade gun: a reusable Mungo gun with a nylon and metal body, for regular use.
- MPP-M heavy duty gun: a reusable Mungo gun that Hobson's stocklist describes as metal.
- With a reusable gun, swap cans straight away when one runs out, and clean the gun with foam cleaner at the end of the job or before a long break.
Hobson's three foam dispenser guns, with the body as Hobson's stocklist describes it. Pack is the minimum order. Hobson's Mungo catalogue lists the MPP-K and MPP-M for Mungo MPU-P50 gun foam, and its stocklist files the disposable gun under its XFOAM range. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
| Gun | Hobson name | Body | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disposable | MPP-H | Nylon and metal | Packs of 2 |
| Trade | MPP-K | Nylon and metal | Single gun |
| Heavy duty | MPP-M | Metal | Single gun |
How to use an expanding foam gun
From the instructions on Hobson's gun grade XFOAM PRO data sheet.
- Safety first: Hobson's sheet carries a DANGER label, so treat the can as a flammable aerosol. Keep it away from heat, sparks and flames, work with good ventilation, wear eye protection and gloves, and read the safety data sheet (on hobson.com.au) for the PPE and handling it sets out.
- Work on surfaces at 5°C or warmer, as the sheet states. Make sure they are clean and free of dust and grease, then moisten them with water.
- Shake the can thoroughly with the valve facing down, then screw it onto the gun's adaptor.
- Hold the gun with the can vertical and the valve pointing down, and press the trigger to release foam.
- Set the flow you want with the adjusting screw on the back of the gun.
- Keep the can at 20 to 25°C while you work. Fill gaps wider than 5cm in layers, letting each layer harden before the next.
- To change cans, shake the new can thoroughly, take the empty can off and screw the new one on straight away, so the foam in the adaptor does not set.
- For a short break, leave the can on and lock the gun by tightening the screw at the back. For a longer break, clean the fresh foam out of the gun with foam cleaner.
How to clean a foam gun
From Hobson's XFOAM PRO cleaner data sheet. Fresh foam cleans out; hardened foam can only be removed mechanically, so clean the gun before the foam sets.
- Hobson warns the cleaner can damage lacquered or painted surfaces, textiles and plastics, so keep it off finished work.
- Screw the cleaner can, with its adaptor, onto the gun.
- Carefully pull the trigger to push out any foam left in the gun. Release it once cleaner starts to come out.
- Leave the cleaner to work inside the gun for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Pull the trigger again and hold it until clean cleaner comes out. Repeat 2 to 3 times each time you clean the gun.

Questions
What foam goes in an expanding foam gun?
Gun grade polyurethane foam in a screw-on can. Single-use hand-held cans with a straw nozzle are not made for a gun. Hobson's catalogue lists the MPP-K and MPP-M for Mungo MPU-P50 gun foam, and files the disposable gun under its XFOAM range with the XFOAM gun grade foam on our expanding foam page.
How do you set the flow on a foam gun?
With the adjusting screw on the back of the gun. Hold the can vertical with the valve down and press the trigger.
Can I leave the can on the foam gun?
For a short break, yes: lock the gun by tightening the screw at the back. For a longer break, clean the fresh foam out of the gun with foam cleaner.
How do I clean a foam gun?
Screw a can of foam cleaner onto the gun, push the old foam out, let the cleaner sit for 1 to 2 minutes, then run it through until it comes out clean. Repeat 2 to 3 times. Hardened foam can only be removed mechanically.
Disposable or reusable foam gun?
A disposable gun (packs of 2) suits a one-off job or a spare. For regular foaming, a reusable MPP-K trade or MPP-M heavy duty gun: swap cans straight away and clean it with foam cleaner at the end of the job.
Is expanding foam safe to use?
Use it with care. Hobson's gun grade foam sheet carries a DANGER label and points to the safety data sheet on hobson.com.au for PPE and handling. Treat the can as a flammable aerosol: keep it away from heat and flames, ventilate the area, and wear eye protection and gloves.
Is a spray foam gun the same as a foam gun?
For gap filling, yes: people use spray foam gun, PU foam gun and expanding foam gun for the same thing, a dispenser gun for gun grade polyurethane foam. Car wash foam guns are a different product.
