Expanding Foam (PU Gap Filler)
Expanding foam (polyurethane gap filler) in 750ml cans: gun grade for a dispenser gun, hand-held with a straw, and a fire resistant (low flame spread) hand-held version, plus the 500ml cleaner for guns and fresh foam.
About the Expanding Foam (PU Gap Filler)
Expanding polyurethane foam fills and seals gaps around door frames and windows, plumbing and ventilation penetrations and construction openings, keeps out cold, draughts and noise, and insulates pipework. It comes in 750ml cans: gun grade for accurate, low expansion filling through a dispenser gun, hand-held with a straw for quick jobs, and a fire resistant low flame spread foam, plus XFOAM foam cleaner for guns and fresh foam. Choose the foam above; the guide below covers which foam to use, how to apply it and drying times.
Also called gap filler foam, PU foam, spray foam or foam filler.
Features
- 750ml cans, 12 to a box
- Gun grade restartable with a dispenser gun
- Hand-held cans with their own nozzle
- Fire resistant, low flame spread option
- Matching 500ml cleaner
Applications
- Gaps around door frames and windows
- Plumbing, heating and ventilation penetrations
- Sealing against draughts and noise
- Fire zones where low flame spread is needed (HPU-M50F)
Choosing expanding foam
Polyurethane expanding foam fills gaps and openings, seals against cold, draughts and noise, insulates, and holds door frames and windows in place. It cures with the humidity in the air and, once hard, can be cut, plastered and painted.
Gun grade foam goes on through a foam dispenser gun: dosing is more accurate, it expands very little, you use less and clean up less, and the can swaps quickly. Hand-held foam has its own straw nozzle for occasional jobs and expands to 2 to 3 times its volume. Fire resistant foam is a modified foam with low flame spread for gaps between fire zones.

| Hand-held (HPU-M50) | Straw nozzle | 33 to 38 litres | 25 to 30 min | Class F |

What expanding foam is used for
- Filling construction openings and gaps around door frames and windows.
- Sealing against cold, draughts and noise.
- Penetrations for plumbing, heating and ventilation, and mounting in electrical installations.
- Thermal insulation of plumbing and heating pipework.
- It bonds to timber, concrete, Hebel and aerated concrete, brick, metal, glass, aluminium and polystyrene. It does not stick to silicone, polyethylene or PTFE.
How to use expanding foam
Cured foam should be protected from UV, so cover or paint it where it is exposed to sunlight.
- Make sure the surfaces are clean and free of dust and grease, then moisten them with water: the foam cures with moisture.
- Work with the can at 20 to 25°C and surfaces at 5°C or warmer.
- Shake the can thoroughly with the valve facing down. Screw it onto the gun (gun grade) or fit the straw nozzle (hand-held).
- Hold the can upside down, valve pointing down, and apply with the trigger. On a gun, set the flow with the adjusting screw at the back.
- Fill gaps wider than 5cm in layers, letting each layer harden before the next.
- It is tack free in 5 to 10 minutes and hard in 1.5 to 5 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Once hard, cut off the excess with a sharp knife, then plaster, paint or seal over it.
- Clean the gun or nozzle straight away with XFOAM PRO cleaner. Hardened foam can only be removed mechanically.
Fire resistant expanding foam
The fire resistant foam (HPU-M50F) is modified for low flame spread. It is tested to European and British standards: EN 13501-1 class B-s1, d0, DIN 4102-1 B1, EN 13501-2 EI 240 and BS 476 part 20, and it carries CERTIFIRE certification.
Those are overseas test results. Where the National Construction Code requires a fire-rated penetration or joint in Australia, use only a fire-stopping system that the building surveyor or certifier has approved for that use.

Questions
Gun grade or hand-held expanding foam?
Gun grade if you use foam regularly: the gun doses accurately, the foam expands very little so you use less, and a can yields 42 to 47 litres. Hand-held cans with a straw nozzle suit occasional jobs and expand 2 to 3 times.
How long does expanding foam take to dry?
It is tack free in 5 to 10 minutes, can be cut after about 20 to 30 minutes, and is fully hard in 1.5 to 5 hours depending on temperature and humidity.
Is expanding foam waterproof?
Cured foam absorbs very little water (at most 1% by volume), but it is a filler and insulator, not a waterproofing membrane. Seal over it where it must keep water out.
Can I paint or plaster over expanding foam?
Yes. Once it has hardened, cut off the excess with a sharp knife, then plaster, paint or seal over it. Cover or paint foam exposed to sunlight, as UV breaks it down.
Is the fire resistant foam fire rated in Australia?
No, it does not carry an Australian fire rating. It is tested to European and British fire standards, including EN 13501-1 B-s1, d0 and EN 13501-2 EI 240. Where the National Construction Code needs a fire-rated penetration, use only a system your certifier has approved.
What does expanding foam not stick to?
Silicone, polyethylene and PTFE. It bonds to timber, concrete, Hebel, brick, metal, glass, aluminium and polystyrene.
