About the Lifting Shackles (Bow & D Shackles)

Rated lifting shackles link a sling, chain or wire rope to a hook or load, for crane lifts, multi-sling connections, rigging and vehicle recovery. They are Grade S to AS 2741, hot dip galvanised with a yellow painted pin: bow shackles with screw pins from 5 to 63mm, dee shackles from 6 to 38mm, and bow shackles with a safety bolt, nut and split pin, from 330kg to 55,000kg working load limit. Choose the type and size above; the guide below covers bow or dee, the WLL chart and fitting.

Also called D shackles, bow shackles or lifting shackles.

Features

  • Grade S, rated and stamped with WLL
  • Hot dip galvanised
  • Screw pin or safety bolt pin
  • Bow and dee patterns

Applications

  • Connecting slings to hooks and lifting points
  • Crane truck rigging

Choosing shackles for lifting

A shackle is the link between a sling, chain or wire rope and the hook or load. These are rated Grade S shackles made and marked to AS 2741: each one carries its working load limit (WLL), grade, the manufacturer's mark and a trace code linked to its test certificate. Use them for lifting systems, multi-sling connections, rigging, tension structures, and vehicle recovery and towing.

Choose the shackle with a WLL at or above the load it will carry in the rig, and match it to the sling and hook. Never use an unmarked or commercial shackle for lifting. Use shackles between -10°C and 200°C.

Bow shackle or D shackle?

  • Bow shackle (anchor shackle): the rounded bow gives room for more than one sling and takes loads from different directions, so it suits multi-leg slings and connections that move. Where the angle between slings is more than 60 degrees, reduce the WLL.
  • D shackle (dee shackle): the narrower D shape is for a single straight, in-line pull.
  • Screw pin: the pin screws into the shackle eye. Quick to fit and remove, for temporary rigging.
  • Safety pin: a bolt, nut and split pin hold the pin so it cannot unscrew. Use it for long-term or permanent installations, and wherever the load or sling could turn the pin.

Shackle sizes and working load limits

Shackles are sized by body diameter. The working load limit is marked on every shackle; always check the marking before use.

Fitting a shackle correctly

  1. Use the correct pin. It should go the full depth of the threaded eye, with its collar sitting on the face of the eye.
  2. Screw the pin in securely, until it is seated against the shackle body.
  3. Remove any shackle that is visibly bent, overly tight or misaligned from service.
  4. Never replace a pin with one of a different grade or size.
  5. Secure the pin of any shackle permanently attached to a lifting device so it cannot come undone.
  6. Rig so the sling cannot roll against the pin and unscrew it: put the sling on the bow, not the pin, or use a safety pin shackle.

Questions

What is the difference between a bow shackle and a D shackle?

A bow shackle has a rounded body that takes slings from more than one direction, so it suits multi-leg lifts. A D shackle is narrower and is for a single straight, in-line pull.

What size shackle do I need?

One with a working load limit at or above the load it carries in the rig, matched to the sling and hook. For example, a 13mm Grade S shackle is rated at 2,000kg and a 19mm shackle at 4,700kg.

What does Grade S mean on a shackle?

Grade S is the strength grade for lifting shackles under AS 2741. Each shackle is marked with its grade, WLL, manufacturer and a trace code.

Screw pin or safety pin shackle?

Screw pin shackles are quick to fit and remove for temporary rigging. Safety pin shackles use a bolt, nut and split pin so the pin cannot unscrew, for long-term installations or where the pin could be turned by the load.

Can I lift with a stainless or hardware shackle?

Not unless it is marked with a working load limit. Our commercial galvanised and stainless shackles are not rated for lifting. Use a rated Grade S lifting shackle.
