Breaker Chisel & Point
SDS breaker chisels and points for SDS-Plus and SDS-Max: flat, pointed, spade, tile and specialty profiles.
About the Breaker Chisel & Point
SDS chisels go in a rotary hammer or breaker in chisel mode for breaking and demolition, chasing channels for pipes and cables, lifting tiles and roughening concrete. Mungo MMP SDS-Plus chisels come flat, pointed, spade, tile and hollow (all 250mm), and MMX SDS-Max chisels come flat and pointed in 400 and 600mm, plus spade, hollow, channel, slotting, wing, seam and a bushing tool. There is also an MPM SDS-Plus spade chisel (40mm, 200mm) and an MXM SDS-Max pointed chisel (600mm), each sold individually. Choose the type and shank above; the guide below covers which chisel does which job and safe use.
Also called SDS chisels, breaker chisels, chisels for hammer drills or demolition chisels.

What SDS chisels are for
An SDS chisel goes in a rotary hammer or breaker in its hammer-only (chiselling) mode, and the tool drives it forward with fast blows instead of turning it. They are used for breaking and demolition, chasing channels for pipes and cables, lifting tiles and roughening concrete.
Mungo's drills and chisels chart lists base materials to drill or chisel into. It rates both its MMP (SDS-Plus) and MMX (SDS-Max) chisels as optimal for concrete, masonry, calcium silicate brick, brick, granite and marble, and does not mark them for reinforced concrete, iron, steel, wall tiles or roof tiles. Mungo lists effortless chiselling with faster penetration and an anti-lock design for both, with the MMP for all popular applications and the MMX for the toughest tasks.
The two other Mungo chisels on this page, the MPM SDS-Plus spade chisel and the MXM SDS-Max pointed chisel, distributed by Hobson, are listed by code, type, shank and size only. They are not on Mungo's drills and chisels suitability chart, so Mungo publishes no material ratings for those two.
SDS-Plus or SDS-Max chisel?
The shank has to match the tool. SDS-Plus chisels fit SDS-Plus rotary hammers, the everyday cordless and corded hammer drills; SDS-Max chisels fit the larger SDS-Max hammers and breakers. One will not fit the other's chuck, so check your tool before you order.
Our SDS-Plus MMP chisels are all 250mm long, and the MPM SDS-Plus spade chisel is 200mm. The SDS-Max range runs from the 175mm bushing tool to 600mm flat and pointed chisels (MMX), plus the 600mm MXM pointed chisel, for heavier breaking and longer reach.
Which chisel for which job
- Pointed chisel: breaking up concrete and masonry, demolition, and starting a break before changing to a flat or spade chisel.
- Flat chisel: general breaking, cutting edges and trimming concrete and masonry.
- Spade chisel: a wide blade (40 to 75mm) for lifting and removing material over an area, such as floor tiles, tile adhesive, render or a mortar or bedding layer. The 40mm SDS-Plus spade chisels (MMP 250mm and MPM 200mm) suit an everyday SDS-Plus hammer drill.
- Tile chisel: a 40mm blade in Mungo's tile chisel profile, commonly used for lifting tiles. Mungo's chart does not rate it for wall tiles.
- Hollow chisel, channel chisel and wing chisel: chasing channels in masonry for pipes and conduit.
- Slotting chisel and seam tool: cutting slots and narrow joints in masonry.
- Bushing tool: a toothed head for roughening concrete surfaces.
SDS chisels we carry
Every chisel and tool on this page, one each (minimum order 1). Select a row to open it in the selector.
Mungo MMP and MPM (SDS-Plus) and MMX and MXM (SDS-Max) chisels, from Hobson's stocklist. Size is the working end width in mm as Hobson lists it (head size on the bushing tool); length is overall length in mm. Hobson lists the MXM pointed chisel as 600 / 18 (the selector shows it as size 18): it is 600mm long, and as a pointed chisel it has no blade width. Grouped by shank, then by type, smallest to largest within each type. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Using an SDS chisel safely
General safe practice for chiselling with a rotary hammer, not instructions from Mungo (Mungo publishes no instructions for the MPM and MXM chisels):
- Check the shank matches the tool, clean the shank and grease it as the tool maker recommends, and lock it into the chuck.
- Set the tool to hammer-only (chisel) mode, never rotary hammer, with the side handle fitted.
- Check for hidden pipes, cables and reinforcement before you chase or break a wall or slab.
- Wear eye, hearing and dust protection. Breaking and chasing concrete, masonry and tile makes silica dust, so use dust extraction or water and a suitable respirator; Safe Work Australia publishes guidance on silica dust.
- Let the tool do the work: work from an edge, take small bites and do not lever with the chisel.
- Replace a chisel that is cracked, bent or badly worn at the tip.

Questions
What chisel do I need to remove tiles?
A tile chisel is the usual choice. Ours is a 40mm SDS-Plus tile chisel, 250mm long, in Mungo's tile chisel profile; Mungo's chart does not rate it for wall tiles. The spade chisels (40 to 75mm wide) are the other choice for lifting tiles, tile adhesive, render or a mortar bed over a wider area.
What is an SDS-Plus spade chisel used for?
Removing and stripping material over an area, such as floor tiles, tile adhesive, render or a mortar bed, with an everyday SDS-Plus hammer drill. We carry two 40mm SDS-Plus spade chisels: the Mungo MMP at 250mm and the Mungo MPM at 200mm long.
What is a pointed chisel used for?
Breaking up concrete and masonry, demolition, and starting a break. We carry a 250mm SDS-Plus pointed chisel and SDS-Max pointed chisels at 400mm and 600mm, including the 600mm Mungo MXM.
Will an SDS-Plus chisel fit my hammer drill?
Only if the drill has an SDS-Plus chuck and a hammer-only setting. SDS-Max chisels need an SDS-Max hammer or breaker and will not fit an SDS-Plus hammer.
What does 600 / 18 mean on the MXM pointed chisel?
600mm is the overall length. Hobson does not say what the 18 measures; a pointed chisel has no blade width, and like every SDS-Max chisel it has an 18mm shank.
What is a bushing tool used for?
Roughening concrete surfaces. Ours is a 45mm SDS-Max bushing tool, 175mm long.
Which chisel is used for chasing walls?
Hollow, channel and wing chisels are made for cutting channels for pipes and conduit in masonry. We carry a 22mm SDS-Plus hollow chisel and SDS-Max hollow (26mm), channel (32mm) and wing (35mm) chisels.
Can SDS chisels break reinforced concrete?
Mungo's chart rates its MMP and MMX chisels as optimal for concrete, masonry, brick, calcium silicate brick, granite and marble, and does not mark them for reinforced concrete or steel; the MPM and MXM chisels are not on the chart. Do not chisel through reinforcement.
Are the chisels sold singly?
Yes, each chisel is sold individually.
Where can I buy SDS chisels in Adelaide?
