About the XBolt Vertical Hanger, M10

The XBolt vertical hanger screws into a 6mm hole in a solid concrete ceiling and takes M10 threaded rod in its head, for hanging pipes, ducts, cable tray, sprinkler lines and ceiling grids. It is one-piece zinc plated carbon steel (MVXMSZIM100038), with 38mm embedment, in packs of 100. Hobson publishes working loads in non-cracked 20 and 32 MPa concrete but no ETA, seismic or fire approval; where a job needs those, use the XBolt PRO hangers on our rod hanger page. Choose it above; the guide below covers the loads with every condition, installation and finish.

Also called vertical hanger anchors or XBolt hangers.

What the XBolt vertical hanger is

Hobson describes the XBolt as a single unit screw type anchor for solid concrete. You drill a hole and screw the anchor in; as it goes in it taps its own thread in the concrete, which gives a mechanical interlock with the concrete. The head is a 13mm hex with a 16mm flange, and inside it is an M10 x 1.5 thread, 12mm long, that takes M10 threaded rod.

Hobson lists it for mechanical, electrical and pipe hangers, ceiling hangers, HVAC and fire sprinklers, cable tray and the suspension of mechanical services, for light to medium duty loads. It suits small anchor spacing and edge distances, is quick to install and is fully removable. It is carbon steel, zinc plated.

XBolt vertical hanger or XBolt PRO?

Hobson makes two families of screw-in hangers for concrete, and they are not interchangeable on paper. The difference is in the approvals and the load data behind them, so check what your services specification or engineer asks for.

  • XBolt vertical hanger, this page (MVXMSZIM100038): M10 rod, 38mm embedment, 6mm hole. Hobson's documents for it give working loads in non-cracked 20 and 32 MPa concrete and state no ETA, seismic or fire approval.
  • XBolt PRO vertical hangers (on our rod hanger page): M8/M10 rod at 40 and 55mm embedment and M10/M12 rod at 60mm, in zinc plated or zinc flake. Hobson's declarations of performance give them ETA Option 1, seismic C1 (C1 and C2 for the M10/M12) and a fire rating, with ETA service loads for cracked and non-cracked concrete under the conditions that page sets out.
  • Hobson lists fire sprinklers among this hanger's uses, but where the design calls for fire-rated, seismic or ETA-assessed anchors, use the XBolt PRO code the designer names: Hobson's documents give this hanger none of those approvals.

Dimensions and installation values

One size. Select the row to open it in the selector.

From Hobson's XBolt vertical hanger data sheets 2004031DS and 2406251DS, which agree. Dimensions in mm. Embedment is the depth the anchor sits in the concrete; rod thread is the internal thread in the head and its length. Hobson gives no hole depth, minimum concrete thickness or maximum installation torque for this code. Packs of 100 are the minimum order. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Loads Hobson publishes, and every condition on them

Hobson's data sheet gives the basic load performance below, for this hanger at 38mm embedment in non-cracked concrete of the strength shown. The shear values are at a 100mm edge distance. They are values for the anchor in the concrete, not a rating for the threaded rod, the coupling or the service hanging from it.

What the sheet does not give: values for cracked concrete, any reduction for hangers closer to an edge or to each other (it sets minimums of 40mm edge distance and 50mm spacing, but no loads at those distances), shear at less than 100mm from an edge, combined tension and shear, a minimum concrete thickness, or fire performance. So do not assume these values hold at the minimum distances. The load on each hanger, the hanger spacing, and whether the concrete may be cracked are for the services designer or an engineer to work out.

These working loads come from Hobson's factor of safety method in non-cracked concrete and are calculated differently from the XBolt PRO's ETA service loads, so the two cannot be compared directly: a higher figure here does not make this hanger the stronger choice.

MVXMSZIM100038, Hobson basic load performance in kN (1kN = 1,000N), from data sheets 2004031DS and 2406251DS. Only with: 38mm embedment, 6mm hole, non-cracked concrete of the strength shown, shear at a 100mm edge distance (c1). Design resistance is the governing minimum of the concrete and steel resistances with capacity reduction factors of 0.60 (concrete) and 0.80 (steel) included, for an engineer designing with factored loads. Working load is the governing minimum allowable load with factors of safety of 3.0 (concrete) and 2.5 (steel) included. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Installing an XBolt vertical hanger

  1. Check the base is solid concrete and that the hanger layout and load per hanger come from your services design. Keep at least 40mm from an edge and 50mm between hangers, Hobson's minimums.
  2. Drill a 6mm hole, Hobson's recommended pre-drilling diameter, deep enough for the full 38mm embedment (the sheet gives no separate hole depth). Hobson lists its 6 x 110mm SDS-Plus masonry bits among the related parts.
  3. Clear the dust out of the hole. Hobson lists a blow pump among the related parts for this hanger.
  4. Fit the XBolt vertical hanger socket (MXSVSM10: 13mm across flats, 1/4 inch drive) to a cordless impact driver, which Hobson recommends, and drive the hanger in until the flange is home against the concrete at full embedment.
  5. Screw the M10 threaded rod into the head. There is 12mm of thread in the head.

Zinc plated: for dry, enclosed positions

Hobson's finish comparison gives zinc plating about 5 microns with low corrosion resistance, recommended for indoor and non-corrosive environments, and Hobson's corrosion guide uses zinc plated only where a fixing is enclosed in a very low or low corrosivity zone. That suits services hung inside a building. For sheltered or exposed concrete, such as an open car park soffit or a coastal verandah, ask us for an alternative.

In data centres and rooms full of electronics, Hobson's zinc whisker article explains that whiskers grow from electroplated zinc, and Hobson lists its zinc flake XBolt PRO M10/M12 hanger for data centres.

Questions

What drill size for an XBolt vertical hanger?

6mm, Hobson's recommended pre-drilling diameter for the M10 x 38 hanger, drilled deep enough for its 38mm embedment.

What socket drives an XBolt vertical hanger?

The XBolt vertical hanger socket, MXSVSM10: 13mm across flats with a 1/4 inch drive. Hobson recommends a cordless impact driver.

How much weight can an XBolt vertical hanger hold?

Hobson gives a working load in tension of 3.1kN in non-cracked 20 MPa concrete and 3.9kN in non-cracked 32 MPa concrete, at 38mm embedment. It gives no values for cracked concrete or for hangers near an edge or each other, so the load per hanger and the layout are for your services designer or engineer.

Is the XBolt vertical hanger fire rated or seismic rated?

Hobson lists fire sprinklers among its uses, but its documents for this hanger state no ETA, seismic or fire approval. Where the design calls for fire-rated, seismic or ETA-assessed anchors, use the XBolt PRO. The XBolt PRO hangers on our rod hanger page carry ETA Option 1, seismic and fire ratings in Hobson's declarations of performance; use the code the designer specifies.

What threaded rod does it take?

M10 rod only. The head has an M10 x 1.5 internal thread, 12mm long. The XBolt PRO hangers take M8/M10 or M10/M12.

Can it go into brick or block?

Hobson describes it as an anchor for solid concrete and publishes loads for concrete only. Ask us about a fixing with published values for masonry.

Can the hanger be removed?

Yes. Hobson lists it as fully removable, but gives no guidance on reusing a removed hanger or its hole, so use a new hanger in a new hole.

Where can I buy XBolt vertical hangers in Adelaide?

Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have them delivered to site.
