About the Vertical Hanger, Timber (Type 17)

This rod hanger drives straight into the underside of a timber beam or joist with a Type 17 point and holds M10 threaded rod hanging straight down, for pipes, sprinkler lines, conduit and cable tray under timber floors and roofs. It is one-piece and zinc plated, in 25mm and 50mm screw lengths, packs of 100. Choose the length above; the guide below covers the pull-out values Hobson publishes and what they cover, the socket, and the hangers for steel and concrete.

Also called timber vertical hangers, self-drilling hangers for timber or beam hangers for allthread.

Features

  • One-piece self-drilling threaded rod hanger
  • Type-17 timber point for driving into timber
  • Zinc plated finish
  • M10 rod size
  • Install with a cordless impact driver (Hobson recommends)

Applications

  • Hanging pipes and sprinkler lines under timber floors and roofs
  • Electrical conduit and cable tray from timber joists
  • Threaded rod from the underside of timber beams

What a self-drilling timber vertical hanger is

Hobson describes it as a one-piece, self-drilling fastening system for installation into timber, made for the suspension of threaded rod. One end is a 14 gauge Type 17 screw (6.3mm major diameter, 10 threads per inch) that drills its own way into a timber beam or joist; the other end is a body with a 16mm hex and an M10 internal thread, 15mm long, on the same axis as the screw. Driven up into the underside of a beam or joist, the rod hangs straight down in line with the screw.

Hobson lists it for the vertical suspension of threaded rod for pipe hanging, fire protection, and electrical conduit and cable tray. It is carbon steel, zinc plated (RoHS compliant). Hobson publishes no fire rating for it: where a fire services design calls for rated hangers, use what the designer specifies.

Which vertical hanger for which structure

  • Underside of a timber beam or joist, rod in line with the screw: this hanger, M10 rod, 25 or 50mm screw.
  • Side of a timber beam or joist: the Type 17 vertical side hanger (M10 x 50), which takes the rod side entry and has Hobson design capacities in single shear. It is on the threaded rod hangers and panel anchors page.
  • Steel 1.0 to 3.0mm thick: the self-drilling hangers for steel, right angle (M6, M8, M10) or in-line (M10), each on its own page.
  • Concrete ceilings and soffits: XBolt PRO vertical hangers or MCS-I concrete screw hangers, which have their own approvals and install values.

Timber vertical hanger sizes

Both hangers take M10 rod and share the same screw thread, hex and internal thread; only the screw length changes. Select a row to open that hanger in the selector.

Pull-out values: what Hobson publishes and what they cover

Hobson's data sheet gives pull-out values: laboratory values for a load pulling straight out along the screw, at 35mm embedment, in F7 pine and in hardwood. They are below with every condition the sheet attaches. The sheet does not say which hanger length was tested; the 25mm hanger has only 25mm of screw, so it cannot reach 35mm embedment and these values do not cover it.

What the sheet does not cover: any sideways (shear) load on the screw, so the values only apply with the rod hanging in line with the screw, not with the hanger driven into the side of a beam; any edge distance, end distance, spacing or member size; and any joint group or design capacity to AS 1720.1. Hobson notes that safety factors should be considered for design purposes and that actual pull-out loads may differ with the properties of the timber. So the load per hanger, the spacing and the layout are for the services designer or an engineer to set. For the side of a beam, use the Type 17 side hanger, which has design capacities with its edge, end and member limits.

MVWMSZIM pull-out values in newtons (1000N = 1kN), from Hobson's data sheet: laboratory values with Hobson products, load along the screw, 35mm embedment in the timber shown. Mean load: average ultimate strength of the samples tested. Characteristic load: 95% of these screws are expected to be stronger. Working load: includes Hobson's factor of safety of 2.5 for timber. No edge, end, spacing, member size or joint group is published with these values.

Zinc plated: for dry, enclosed positions

The hanger is zinc plated (RoHS compliant). Hobson's finish comparison puts zinc plating at about 5 microns with low corrosion resistance, recommended for indoor and non-corrosive environments, and Hobson's corrosion guide for metal connectors uses zinc plated only where the part is enclosed in a very low or low corrosivity zone (C1 or C2). That suits services hung under a timber floor or roof inside a building. For sheltered or exposed positions, such as an open carport, a verandah, a deck or a coastal site, this finish is not the right choice: Hobson's guide calls for stainless steel or hot dip galvanising where a fixing is exposed. Ask us for an alternative.

How to install a timber vertical hanger

  1. Check the hanger position, the load per hanger and the spacing against your services design.
  2. Fit a 16mm socket to a cordless impact driver, which Hobson recommends. Hobson's vertical hanger socket (MXSVS-SI, 1/4 inch drive, packs of 10) suits it.
  3. Drive the hanger into the timber at Hobson's recommended speed of about 1500 rpm. The Type 17 point drills its own way in.
  4. Stop when the body is flush with the timber surface.
  5. Insert the M10 threaded rod and turn it clockwise until it is fully engaged in the hanger (the internal thread is 15mm long), then hang the service from it.

Questions

How do you hang a rod from a timber joist?

Drive a self-drilling timber rod hanger up into the underside of the joist with a 16mm socket until the body is flush with the timber, then screw M10 threaded rod in clockwise until it is fully engaged. For the side of a beam, use the Type 17 side hanger instead.

How much load will a timber vertical hanger hold?

Hobson publishes laboratory pull-out values at 35mm embedment for a load along the screw: a working load of 1750N in F7 pine and 3150N in hardwood, with a factor of safety of 2.5 included. Hobson notes these are laboratory values, that safety factors should still be considered for design purposes and that actual pull-out loads vary with the properties of the timber. No edge, end, spacing or member size limits are published with them, they do not cover sideways loads, and the 25mm hanger cannot reach 35mm embedment. The load per hanger and the spacing are for your services designer or engineer to set.

What socket do I need?

A 16mm socket. Hobson's vertical hanger socket (MXSVS-SI) has a 1/4 inch drive, suits these timber hangers and the M6, M8 and M10 hangers for steel, and comes in packs of 10. Hobson recommends a cordless impact driver at about 1500 rpm.

What size rod fits?

M10. Both lengths have an M10 internal thread 15mm long.

What is the difference between the 25mm and 50mm hanger?

The screw length: 25mm (46mm overall) or 50mm (71mm overall). Both have the same 14 gauge Type 17 thread, 16mm hex and M10 internal thread. Hobson's pull-out values are at 35mm embedment, which only the 50mm hanger can reach.

Can I use these hangers outside?

They are zinc plated, which Hobson recommends for indoor and non-corrosive environments, so keep them to dry, enclosed positions. Hobson's corrosion guide calls for stainless or hot dip galvanised fixings where they are exposed; ask us for an alternative.
