What a right angle hanger for steel is

Hobson describes it as a one-piece, self drilling fastening system for installation into steel, made for hanging threaded rod. One end is a self-drilling screw: a 5mm drill point 9mm long, then a 14 gauge thread at 20 threads per inch. The other end is a body with a 16mm hex and a hole that takes the threaded rod at a right angle to the screw. So the screw goes into a vertical steel face, such as the web of a purlin, girt or light steel beam, and the rod hangs straight down beside it.

Hobson lists it for hanging pipe, fire protection services, electrical conduit and cable tray, and recommends steel 1.0 to 3.0mm thick. It is made of HEC carbon steel, zinc plated, and comes with a backing nut. Hobson publishes no fire rating for it: where a fire services design calls for rated hangers, use what the designer specifies.

Which hanger for which structure

Loads: what Hobson publishes and what it does not

Hobson's data sheet for this hanger gives two kinds of figures. Pull-out values: laboratory values for a load along the screw, in G450 plate 1.0 to 2.5mm (and 8mm HRS); no value is given at 3.0mm. And the screw's own mechanical strengths (torsional, tensile and shear strength of the steel part, such as a characteristic shear of 12,600 N): these are the strength of the screw itself, not a capacity for the rod load. On a right angle hanger the rod pulls down across the screw in thin steel, and Hobson publishes no values for that sideways rod load, nor any edge distance or spacing limits. So the sheet does not give a hanging capacity for this hanger, and we do not quote one.

Zinc plated: for dry, enclosed positions

The hanger is zinc plated (RoHS compliant). Hobson's finish comparison puts zinc plating at about 5 microns with low corrosion resistance, recommended for indoor and non-corrosive environments, and Hobson's corrosion guide for metal connectors uses zinc plated only where the connector is enclosed in a very low or low corrosivity zone (C1 or C2). That suits services hung inside a building. For sheltered or exposed positions, such as an open carport, a verandah or a coastal site, this finish is not the right choice: ask us for an alternative.

How to install a right angle hanger

1. Check the steel is within Hobson's recommended 1.0 to 3.0mm and that the load per hanger and the spacing come from your services design.
2. Fit a 16mm socket to a cordless impact driver, which Hobson recommends. Hobson's vertical hanger socket (MXSVS-SI, 1/4 inch hex shank, packs of 10) suits the M6, M8 and M10 hangers.
3. Drive the hanger into the steel face: the drill point drills the hole and the 14 gauge thread follows it. Keep driving until the screw passes right through the steel and the body sits against the face, with the rod hole lined up for the rod to hang straight down.
4. From the far side, run the supplied backing nut onto the screw where it comes through and tighten it against the steel, clamping the steel between the hanger body and the nut. Hobson's installation drawing shows this, and Hobson says the nut should be used to ensure a secure installation. You need access to the back of the steel to do it.
5. Push the threaded rod of the matching size (M6, M8 or M10) up into the hole in the hanger body and screw it in, as Hobson's drawing shows, then hang the service from it.
