About the Allthread Socket Bit

Allthread socket bits grip threaded rod so you can drive it in, or back it out, with a drill, for screwing rod into drop-in anchors when hanging pipe, duct and cable tray, running rod into rod hangers and joining rod with couplers. They are S2 alloy steel with a 1/4 inch hex shank, in M10 or M12, sold individually, and are not for use in hammer or impact mode. Choose the rod size above; the guide below covers how they grip and how to use one.

Also called allthread sockets, allthread drivers or allthread installation sockets.

Applications

  • Screwing rod into drop-in anchors in concrete ceilings
  • Running rod into rod hangers
  • Joining rod with hex coupling nuts
  • Backing out rod

What an allthread socket bit does

Hobson calls it an allthread installation socket bit: a rod socket adapter that removes the manual process of installing threaded rod by hand. You push the end of the rod into the socket and automatic locking cams grip it and turn it until the rod is fully inserted. Hobson's product guide describes five internal rollers for grip, and the Did You Know sheet says the pins are hardened to increase the life of the tool.

Hobson lists it for fast, smooth installation of threaded rod with no damage to the threads, and says it can be used to install and to remove rod. It is S2 alloy steel with a 1/4 inch hex shank (fits a drill chuck or quick-release holder), in M10 and M12.

What it is used for

  • Screwing threaded rod into drop-in anchors in a concrete ceiling when hanging pipe, duct, cable tray and conduit.
  • Running rod into rod hangers, such as the M10 rod in XBolt PRO hangers and self-drilling hangers for steel and timber.
  • Joining lengths of rod with hex coupling nuts.
  • Backing out rod that has to come out again.

How to drive allthread with a socket bit

  1. Fit the socket bit for your rod size to the drill.
  2. Turn off hammer and impact: Hobson says it is not to be used with a drill in hammer or impact mode, which also rules out an impact driver.
  3. Push the end of the rod into the socket; the locking cams grip it.
  4. Drive the rod into the anchor, hanger or coupler at a steady speed until it is fully home, to the thread engagement the anchor or hanger maker gives.
  5. Take the socket off the rod, then fit the fixture and tighten the nut to the anchor's installation torque with a spanner or torque wrench as the anchor maker specifies.
  6. To remove rod, fit the socket the same way and run the drill in reverse.

Cutting and cleaning up the rod ends

Cut rod to length with a threaded rod cutter (our bolting tool page) and clean up the cut end with the allthread outer reamer: a deburring and chamfer tool for round stock from 3 to 19mm, threaded or unthreaded, with three high speed steel inserts and a 1/4 inch drive, for a drill at up to 400 RPM. A clean chamfered end lets nuts, couplers and anchors start cleanly.
