Allthread Outer Reamer
An outer reamer that deburrs and chamfers the cut ends of threaded rod so nuts start cleanly.
About the Allthread Outer Reamer
An allthread outer reamer takes the burr off the cut end of threaded rod and chamfers it so a nut or coupler starts cleanly, handy after cutting rod for hangers, anchors and fabrication work. It fits round stock from 3 to 19mm (1/8 to 3/4 inch), threaded or plain, with a 1/4 inch hex drive for a drill at up to 400 RPM, three high speed steel inserts and a chrome finish, sold singly. The guide below covers which rod sizes it fits and how to use it.
Also called threaded rod deburring tool or allthread chamfer tool.
Applications
- Deburring cut threaded rod so nuts start cleanly
- Chamfering round bar ends
What an allthread outer reamer does
Cutting threaded rod leaves a burr and a squashed first thread on the end, which makes a nut or coupler hard to start. An outer reamer is a cone-shaped cutter that goes over the end of the rod: as it turns, its cutting edges take off the burr and put a chamfer on the end so the nut starts cleanly. Hobson calls this one an allthread chamfer tool: an all-purpose deburring and chamfer tool for round material, threaded or unthreaded.
Hobson lists it for round stock, bar stock, threaded rod, and screws, bolts and set screws.
Allthread outer reamer size and specification
From Hobson's Did You Know sheet for the allthread chamfer tool (1905101DYK). It takes round material from 3 to 19mm. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
| Tool | Fits round material | Drive | Cutters | Speed | Finish | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Allthread outer reamer (chamfer tool) | 3 to 19mm (1/8 to 3/4 inch) | 1/4 inch hex drive bit | 3 high speed steel inserts | Drill use, 0 to 400 RPM | Chrome | Sold singly |
Which allthread sizes it fits
By Hobson's stated range of 3 to 19mm, it takes metric threaded rod from M3 up to M18 and imperial rod from 1/8 inch up to 3/4 inch. M20 rod and larger is over 19mm, so it is outside the range. That covers the M6, M8, M10 and M12 rod used for hanging services as well as M16 rod.
How to use the outer reamer
- Cut the rod to length.
- Fit the reamer's 1/4 inch hex drive into the drill.
- Set the drill to run no faster than 400 RPM, Hobson's limit for this tool.
- Hold the reamer square over the end of the rod and run it until the burr is gone and the end is chamfered.
- Run a nut onto the end to check it starts cleanly.
What it cuts
Hobson lists these base materials: stainless, hardened steel, mild steel, copper, brass, wood, fibreglass, hard plastic and nylon. That covers zinc plated, galvanised and stainless threaded rod, and copper, brass and hard plastic round stock of the same size.

Questions
How do you deburr allthread?
Run an outer reamer (chamfer tool) over the cut end in a drill. It takes off the burr and chamfers the end so a nut starts cleanly. Hobson's tool fits round material from 3 to 19mm and runs at up to 400 RPM.
What size allthread does the outer reamer fit?
Round material from 3 to 19mm (1/8 to 3/4 inch), so metric rod up to M18 and imperial rod up to 3/4 inch. M20 and larger is outside its range.
Can I use it in an impact driver?
No. Hobson lists it for drill use only, at 0 to 400 RPM on a 1/4 inch hex drive, so use a drill at or below that speed, not an impact driver.
Does it work on stainless allthread?
Yes. Hobson lists stainless, hardened steel and mild steel among its base materials, along with copper, brass, wood, fibreglass, hard plastic and nylon.
Is it only for allthread?
No. Hobson describes it as an all-purpose deburring and chamfer tool for round material, threaded or unthreaded, including bar stock and screws, bolts and set screws.
Where can I buy a threaded rod deburring tool in Adelaide?
Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have it delivered to site.
