Conxtruct
Vertical Hanger, Steel
The Conxtruct Vertical Hanger Metal is a one-piece, self-drilling threaded rod hanger in zinc-plated steel for fixing directly into steel substrates.
About the Vertical Hanger, Steel
This rod hanger drills itself up into the underside of a steel beam, purlin or deck and holds M10 threaded rod hanging straight down, for pipes, sprinkler lines, conduit and cable tray. It is one-piece and zinc plated, for steel 1.0 to 3.0mm thick, with a backing nut that goes on the screw point on the far side of the steel, in packs of 100. Choose it above; the guide below covers how it differs from the right angle hanger, the pull-out values Hobson publishes and installation.
Also called in-line hangers for steel or self-drilling metal hangers.

What a vertical hanger for steel is
Hobson describes its vertical hangers as a one-piece, self drilling fastening system for installation into steel, made for the suspension of threaded rod. One end is a self-drilling screw: 14 gauge, 20 threads per inch, 25mm long (L1 on Hobson's drawing) including its 5mm drill point, which is 9mm long. The other end is a body with a 16mm hex and an M10 internal thread, 15mm deep, that takes the threaded rod in line with the screw.
So the screw goes up into the underside of a steel member and the rod hangs straight down from it. Hobson lists it for hanging pipe, fire protection, electrical conduit and cable tray, and recommends steel 1.0 to 3.0mm thick. It is HEC carbon steel, zinc plated, and comes with a backing nut. Hobson publishes no fire rating for it: where a fire services design calls for rated hangers, use what the designer specifies.
Hobson's self-drilling screw identification sheet counts more than 16 threads per inch as a fine thread, so the 20 TPI screw thread on this hanger is a fine thread by Hobson's definition.
In-line or right angle, steel, timber or concrete?
- Underside of a steel member, 1.0 to 3.0mm, rod straight below the screw: this in-line vertical hanger, M10 rod.
- Vertical steel face, such as the web of a purlin or girt, 1.0 to 3.0mm: the right angle hanger, which holds M6, M8 or M10 rod at a right angle to the screw. Hobson publishes no values for the sideways rod load on that one; see its page.
- Timber beams and joists: the self-drilling Type 17 hangers for timber, M10 rod.
- Concrete ceilings and soffits: the XBolt vertical hanger (M10 rod, with Hobson working loads but no ETA, seismic or fire approval) or the XBolt PRO vertical hangers, with their own approvals and install values.

Pull-out values Hobson publishes, and every condition on them
Hobson's data sheet gives pull-out values for this hanger in G450 steel plate. Pull-out is a load straight along the screw, which on this in-line hanger is the direction the rod pulls when it hangs straight down from a horizontal steel face. The values apply only that way: Hobson gives none for a sideways or angled load.
They are laboratory values using Hobson product. Hobson notes that actual pull-out loads may differ with the properties of the base material and that safety factors should be considered for design. The sheet covers G450 plate from 1.0 to 2.5mm only, with nothing for 3.0mm (the top of its recommended range) or other steel grades, and gives no edge distance, end distance or spacing limits, so do not assume the values hold near the edge of a flange or close to other fixings. They are for the hanger's grip in the steel, not a rating for the steel member, the rod or the service. The load per hanger, the spacing and the layout are for the services designer or an engineer.
The sheet also gives the strength of the screw itself: torsional strength 17.6Nm, mean tensile 22,600N, mean shear 13,550N, characteristic tensile 21,000N and characteristic shear 12,600N. These are test values for the screw, not a hanging capacity.
MVMMSZIM100025 pull-out values in newtons (1,000N = 1kN), from Hobson's data sheets 1907072DS and 2406231DS, which agree. Only for a load along the screw, in G450 steel plate of the thickness shown, under laboratory conditions. Mean = average ultimate load of the samples tested; characteristic = 95% of screws are expected to exceed it; working load = governing minimum allowable load with a factor of safety of 2.5 for steel included. The sheet also lists a value in 8.0mm hot rolled steel, outside Hobson's recommended 1.0 to 3.0mm, which we leave out. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
How to install a vertical hanger in steel
- Check the steel is within Hobson's recommended 1.0 to 3.0mm and that the load per hanger and the spacing come from your services design. You need access to the back of the steel to fit the backing nut; if you do not have it, ask us before choosing this hanger.
- Fit a 16mm socket to a cordless impact driver, which Hobson recommends. Hobson's vertical hanger socket (MXSVS-SI, 1/4 inch drive, packs of 10) suits this hanger.
- Drive the hanger up into the steel: the drill point drills the hole and the 14 gauge thread follows it in. Stop when the hanger is home.
- From the far side, thread the supplied backing nut onto the screw point where it comes through the steel and tighten it (Hobson's installation picture 2). Hobson says the nut is supplied to lock the hanger in place once it has been installed, and should be used to ensure a secure installation.
- Screw the M10 threaded rod into the body (15mm of internal thread) and hang the service from it.
Zinc plated: for dry, enclosed positions
The hanger is zinc plated (RoHS compliant). Hobson's finish comparison gives zinc plating about 5 microns with low corrosion resistance, recommended for indoor and non-corrosive environments, and Hobson's corrosion guide for metal connectors uses zinc plated only where the connector is enclosed in a very low or low corrosivity zone. That suits services hung inside a building. For sheltered or exposed positions, such as an open carport, a verandah or a coastal site, this finish is not the right choice: ask us for an alternative.

Questions
What is a self-drilling vertical hanger for steel?
A one-piece hanger whose screw end drills into steel and whose body takes M10 threaded rod in line with the screw, so the rod hangs straight down from the underside of a steel member. It comes with a backing nut.
What thickness of steel can it go into?
Hobson recommends steel 1.0 to 3.0mm thick.
How much load will it hold?
Hobson publishes pull-out values for a load along the screw in G450 plate only: working loads of 900N in 1.0mm, 1,800N in 1.5mm, 2,650N in 2.0mm and 3,300N in 2.5mm, from laboratory tests, with no edge or spacing limits and no values for sideways loads. Hobson says safety factors should be considered for design, so the load per hanger and the layout are for your services designer or engineer.
What socket do I need?
A 16mm socket. Hobson's vertical hanger socket (MXSVS-SI) has a 1/4 inch drive and comes in packs of 10. Hobson recommends driving the hangers with a cordless impact driver.
Do I need to use the backing nut?
Yes. Hobson supplies the nut with each hanger to lock it in place once installed and says it should be used to ensure a secure installation. It threads onto the screw point where it comes through the far side of the steel, so you need access to the back of the member.
What is the difference between the in-line and right angle hangers?
On this in-line hanger the rod screws into the end of the body, in line with the screw, so it suits the underside of a steel member. The right angle hanger holds the rod at a right angle to the screw, for a vertical steel face, and comes in M6, M8 and M10.
Can I use these hangers outside?
They are zinc plated, which Hobson recommends for indoor and non-corrosive environments, so keep them to dry, enclosed positions. Ask us about an alternative for sheltered or exposed spots.
Where can I buy vertical hangers for steel in Adelaide?
Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have them delivered to site.
