About the Chemical Anchor Gun & Accessory

Chemical anchor accessories are what you need to put the resin in the hole: guns (Chemset-style guns) to dispense the cartridge, mixer nozzles to mix it properly, sleeves for hollow brick and block, and plugs and extensions for deep holes. XCHEM manual applicators suit 300, 420 and 585ml tubes plus a 4-in-1 applicator, and Mungo MIT injection guns come in system case and cordless versions. Also here are MCXND1 and MCXND3 mixer nozzles, 250mm and 1m extensions, nylon perforated and steel mesh sleeves (DIN 9044), and piston plugs from 14 to 37mm. Choose the part above; the guide below covers hole cleaning and hollow masonry.

Also called chemset guns, chemical anchor guns or injection guns.

What you need with a chemical anchor

A chemical anchor cartridge holds a resin and a hardener. A gun (applicator) pushes both out through a mixer nozzle, where they mix and start to react, and the mixed resin bonds the rod into the hole. Hobson says the nozzles are essential: they are designed to mix each chemical correctly, which is what gives the load capacities and gel and cure times in the product's ETA, and the wrong nozzle will not mix it properly. Every XCHEM PRO tube includes two nozzles; more are sold here.

Treat the resin maker's instructions as mandatory: the nozzle, the hole cleaning and the sleeve named on the resin's data sheet and ETA. A chemical anchor only reaches its published values when it is installed that way, and structural or safety critical fixings need designing to the ETA by an engineer. In the selector, "Suits / material" shows the cartridge a gun fits, or the material of a sleeve or plug.

Each accessory and the cartridges or job it suits. Select a row to open it. The nozzle for each XCHEM resin is the one named on that resin's data sheet; use it, not another nozzle that happens to fit.

Cleaning the hole before you inject

A dusty hole will not bond. The installation steps on each XCHEM data sheet show the cleaning sequence for holes in concrete: for H501 hybrid, V401 vinylester and P201 polyester, blow the hole out 4 times, brush it 4 times, then blow it out 4 times; for E701 epoxy, blow 2 times, brush 2 times, blow 2 times, brush 2 times and blow 2 times. Each sheet says to refer to the product's ETA for the full installation.

Use a brush that matches the drill hole diameter and a blow-out pump or compressed air tool: both are on our anchor cleaning page.

Installing with the gun and nozzle

  1. Load the cartridge in the gun that suits its size, and screw on the nozzle named on its data sheet. Add an extension where the hole is deeper than the nozzle reaches.
  2. Pump the first resin to waste until it comes out an even colour, as the data sheet pictures show.
  3. In solid concrete, fill the hole from the bottom: the data sheet pictures show it filled about two thirds. In a sleeve, the XCHEM sheets give no fill amount, so follow the resin's ETA for filling the sleeve, or ask us.
  4. Insert the rod with a twist before the gel (working) time runs out. Then leave it undisturbed and unloaded until the cure time has passed. Both times depend on the base material temperature and are on the data sheet; wet holes take longer to cure.
  5. Hobson's data sheets note the resin itself must be at least 20°C.
1. Drill
Diameter and depth from the data sheet
2. Clean
Blow and brush out all dust
3. Inject
From the bottom up, once the resin runs an even colour
4. Insert and wait
Twist the rod in; no load until cured

Using the XCHEM sleeves in hollow masonry

In hollow masonry the resin needs something to hold it. Hobson explains that the sleeve contains the liquid chemical so it sets into a shape that grips the inside of the hollow block or brick and carries the load from the anchor to the wall. Use a resin with a masonry ETA: H501, V401 or P201. E701 epoxy is too thin for hollow masonry: it can drain out of a perforated sleeve before it gels, and it has no masonry ETA.

The H501, V401 and P201 data sheets give these sleeves and installation limits for hollow masonry of at least 6 MPa compressive strength and a density of at least 700 kg/m3 (H501) or 900 kg/m3 (V401 and P201). The sheets give no minimum member thickness for hollow masonry; check the ETA. Loads are on each resin's data sheet and apply only under its conditions. Every chemical anchor sleeve we carry, including the Mungo MIT-SH range, is compared on our chemical anchor page.

Perforated sleeves for hollow masonry from the XCHEM data sheets (H501 250227DS, V401 2408091DS, P201 2502271DS). Sleeve is diameter x length in mm. Distances in mm; torque is the maximum installation torque. The 16 x 130 sleeve and the metal mesh sleeves are not listed on these sheets. For calcium silicate masonry, the H501 sheet says to refer to the ETA. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Piston plugs and nozzle extensions

  • Nozzle extensions (250mm and 1m XCHEM, and the Mungo MIT-MI-V1) lengthen the mixer nozzle so you can fill a deep hole from the bottom.
  • Piston plugs fit on the end of the extension and are sized by diameter: plastic plugs from 14 to 35mm in packs of 10, and Mungo MIT-VS plugs from 22 to 37mm sold singly. They are commonly used to fill deep, wide or overhead holes from the bottom without trapping air. Hobson publishes no data sheet for them, so size the plug to the drill hole and use one where the resin's ETA calls for it.

Mungo MIT guns and nozzles

  • MIT-PP-HK Easy-press system case guns (manual) and MIT-PP-A cordless guns, each in a version for 165, 280 and 300ml MIT cartridges and one for 400ml.
  • The Mungo MIT-SP styrene free polyester we carry comes in 400ml cartridges, so it takes the 400ml guns, and the Mungo product guide lists the MIT-MI-2 mixer nozzle for it.

Questions

What gun do I need for chemset?

One that fits the cartridge. XCHEM PRO tubes take the XCHEM manual applicator for their size (300, 420 or 585ml) or the 4-in-1 applicator, which fits 300, 385, 420 and 585ml. Mungo MIT cartridges take a Mungo MIT gun for 165 to 300ml or for 400ml, manual or cordless.

Which mixer nozzle fits XCHEM chemical anchors?

The one named on the resin's data sheet: MCXND1 for E701 epoxy, and MCXND3 for H501 hybrid, V401 vinylester and P201 polyester. Hobson says the wrong nozzle will not mix the chemical properly. The Mungo MIT-MI-2 nozzle is for Mungo MIT-SP.

Do chemical anchor tubes come with nozzles?

Yes. Every XCHEM PRO tube includes two nozzles. Spare MCXND1 and MCXND3 nozzles come in packs of 10.

Do I need a sleeve for hollow brick or block?

Yes. In hollow masonry the sleeve holds the resin so it sets around the inside of the block. Use H501, V401 or P201 with the sleeve the data sheet lists for your rod size, for example a 12 x 80mm sleeve in a 12mm hole for M8. E701 epoxy is not suitable for hollow masonry.

How do I clean the hole for a chemical anchor?

As the resin's data sheet shows: for H501, V401 and P201 in concrete, blow out 4 times, brush 4 times and blow out 4 times; for E701, blow and brush 2 times each, alternating, finishing with a blow. Use a brush the size of the hole.

What is a piston plug for?

It fits on the end of the nozzle extension and is commonly used to fill deep, wide or overhead holes from the bottom without trapping air. Size it to the drill hole and use one where the resin's ETA calls for it.

Where can I buy a chemset gun in Adelaide?

Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have them delivered to site.
