About the Cable Tie Tension Tool
A cable tie gun grips the tail of a cable tie and pulls it tight as you squeeze, so every tie on a run is drawn up the same, handy for electricians, solar installers and fabricators getting through lots of ties. What a cable tie gun does
A cable tie gun, or cable tie tension tool, grips the tail of a cable tie and pulls it tight as you squeeze the handle, so every tie on a run is drawn up the same way without pulling by hand. Electricians, solar installers and fabricators use one where a job takes a lot of ties.

Which ties to use with it
Hobson lists the tool for sizes 3 to 10 but does not say what the numbers measure or publish a data sheet for it, so we make no claim about which tie widths it takes. Our nylon cable ties come in widths from 2.5 to 12.6mm.
- Natural nylon ties: for indoor use, such as switchboards, server racks and cable harnesses. Hobson's data sheet says to avoid direct sunlight and UV.
- Black UV stabilised nylon ties: for outdoor work such as solar installs, netting and irrigation.
- Both are Nylon 66, rated from -40°C to 85°C. A wider tie is a stronger tie: from 8.2kg tensile strength at 2.5mm wide to 79.3kg at 9.0mm, per Hobson's nylon tie sheet.
Fitting a cable tie with a tension tool
- Wrap the tie around the bundle and feed the tail through the head, teeth facing in.
- Pull it snug by hand.
- Slide the tail into the nose of the tool and squeeze the handle to draw the tie up.
- Stop at firm. Do not overtighten on cables: crushed insulation fails early.
- Trim the tail flush with the head, so there is no sharp edge left to cut hands.
