Cable Ties (Zip Ties)
Cable ties (zip ties) in black UV-stabilised and natural nylon, 100 to 1,530mm long and 2.5 to 12.6mm wide, plus 304 and 316 stainless steel cable ties with a ball lock.
About the Cable Ties (Zip Ties)
Cable ties, or zip ties, hold cables, hoses, netting and anything else in a bundle, in switchboards, server racks and harnesses, and on outdoor cable and hose runs. Natural nylon suits indoors, black UV stabilised nylon suits outdoors, and 304 and 316 stainless ball lock ties suit harsh and coastal sites, from 2.5 to 12.6mm wide and 100 to 1,530mm long. Choose the material, width and length above; the guide below covers strength, which tie lasts outdoors and fitting.
Also called zip ties, stainless steel cable ties, metal zip ties, tie wraps or Ty-Rap-style ties.
Applications
- Bundling cables in switchboards and server racks
- Outdoor cable and hose runs (black UV or stainless)
- Tying netting and mesh
- Coastal and harsh sites (316 stainless)
Choosing cable ties and zip ties
Cable ties and zip ties are the same thing: a strap with a toothed tail that locks through a head, holding cables, hoses, netting and anything else in a bundle. Choose by where it will live first, then by width for strength, then by length.
Indoors, in switchboards, server racks and harnesses, natural nylon is fine. Outdoors, always use black UV stabilised ties or stainless: natural nylon is not made for direct sunlight. For coastal, chemical or high heat sites, use stainless steel. The 4.8 x 300mm black UV tie is the everyday all-rounder.
Cable tie sizes and strength
A wider tie is a stronger tie. Length sets how big a bundle it will go around, with a tail left to pull tight.

Natural nylon, black UV, stainless or Tefzel?
- Natural nylon (Nylon 66): for indoor use only, such as switchboards, server racks, cable harnesses and appliances. Keep it out of direct sunlight.
- Black UV stabilised nylon: made for outdoor use, such as solar installs, shade cloth and netting, irrigation and trailer harnesses.
- Both nylon ties are UL approved Nylon 66 with UL94V-2 fire resistance, RoHS compliant, and rated for -40°C to 85°C.
- Stainless steel (304 and 316): a ball lock head that locks the moment it is pulled tight. For heat, harsh sun, chemicals and coastal sites where nylon would fail; choose 316 near the sea. Widths of 4.6 and 7.9mm, 130 to 1,050mm long.
- Tefzel: blue fluoropolymer ties for demanding outdoor and chemical environments.
Fitting cable ties
- Wrap the tie around the bundle and feed the tail through the head, teeth facing in.
- Pull it snug by hand. Do not overtighten on cables: crushed insulation fails early.
- For stainless ties, pull tight and the ball lock holds straight away.
- Cut the tail flush with the head using side cutters or a cable tie tool, so there is no sharp edge left to cut hands.

Questions
Are cable ties and zip ties the same thing?
Yes. Cable tie, zip tie and tie wrap are all names for the same self-locking strap.
Which cable ties suit outdoors?
Black cable ties in UV stabilised nylon for most outdoor work, such as solar, netting and irrigation. Stainless steel ties for coastal, high heat or chemical sites. Do not use natural (white) nylon ties in the sun.
What is the strongest cable tie?
Our strongest nylon tie is the 12.6mm black UV tie at 114kg tensile strength; the 7.6 and 9mm ties are the heavy duty cable ties in the range. For the toughest conditions, use a stainless steel ball lock tie.
What temperature can nylon cable ties handle?
Our Nylon 66 cable ties are rated from -40°C to 85°C. For hotter locations, use stainless steel ties.
What size cable tie do I need?
Pick the width for the strength you need from the chart, then a length that goes around the bundle with a tail to pull. The 4.8 x 300mm black UV tie covers most everyday jobs.
Should I use 304 or 316 stainless cable ties?
304 suits general outdoor and industrial use. Choose 316 for coastal and marine sites, where salt attacks 304.
