Threaded rod cutters

Hobson's threaded rod cutter cuts zinc threaded rod with little effort and leaves a cut that needs no burr removal, so the thread can be used straight away. Hobson says it cuts mild steel rod only. The cutting parts are heat treated alloy steel, and the cutter is light and compact.

Hobson gives about 1,500 to 2,000 cuts per die. Cutting other M10 or M12 materials and coatings reduces the number of cuts and the quality of the cut; when a die wears, fit a replacement die of the same size.

Tone electric torque wrenches

The Tone Simple Torqon (STC type) is a 240V electric torque control wrench. You turn the dial to the torque you need in Nm, squeeze the trigger, and it shuts off when it reaches that torque. Tone gives a repeated tightening accuracy of plus or minus 5%, torque control in both directions, no impact or vibration and low noise. It comes with an L-foot and a straight I-bar reaction arm, so the operator does not have to hold against the torque.

Only impact sockets should be used, and sockets are not included. Tone notes that some error is unavoidable because the torque coefficient varies with the coating on the bolts and nuts; where high precision is needed it recommends a dial type torque wrench.

1. Check the direction of rotation of the socket and the reaction bar.
2. Choose the L-foot or the I-bar to suit the gap between the nut and something solid to react against, and fit it in the Q-connector.
3. Fit the Q-connector to the drive, then fit an impact socket securely.
4. Set the dial to the torque in Nm.
5. Squeeze the trigger, in short presses until the reaction bar touches its support. The wrench stops when the torque is reached.

TC bolt shear wrenches and sockets

Tension control (TC) bolts are installed with a Tone TC bolt shear wrench. Hobson describes the method: the outer socket turns the nut; when the correct pre-load is reached the outer socket stops, the inner socket counter-rotates and shears off the bolt's spline end, and the wrench ejects the spline. The sheared spline shows the bolt is installed. The wrenches are for TC bolts to EN 14399-10 class 10.9 HRC, which are on the TC bolt page.

Each wrench is supplied with one size of inner and outer socket (M24 for the GH-242EZ, M20 for the GM-222EZ). For other bolt sizes on the GH-242EZ, add the GH series inner and outer sockets below. Hobson lists separate GM series sockets for the GM-222EZ: ask us.

ONESIDE bolt insert tool

The insert tool (480mm long) is the manual tool for installing Hobson ONESIDE structural blind bolts, M20, in joints that can only be reached from one side, such as hollow sections. From Hobson's ONESIDE data sheet: the bolt locks into the front of the tool and the split step-washer is folded into the thin part of the tool; the bolt and washer go through the pre-drilled hole; turning the tool 180 degrees unfolds the washer, which is pulled back against the back of the joint; the other parts go on and the nut is snugged up; then the tool comes out and the nut is tightened to the required tension.
