Heavy Hex Nut
ASTM A194 heavy hex nuts for stud bolts on pipe flanges, valves and pressure equipment, grade 2H and more.
About the Heavy Hex Nut
Heavy hex nuts go on stud bolts to bolt pipe flanges, valves and pressure equipment together in oil, gas, mining and process plant. They are made to ASTM A194: grade 2H, the nut Hobson pairs with B7 studs, from 5/16 to 4 inch and M6 to M72, plus grades 2HM, 3, 4L, 6, 7, 7L, 7M, 8 (304), 8M (316), 8MA and 8T, and duplex and super duplex, plain, galvanised, Esso spec, Xylan, zinc, cadmium or zinc yellow. Many coated nuts are tapped oversize, so standard and oversize nuts show on separate rows; sold individually. Choose the size, grade and finish above; the guide below covers grades, sizes and proof loads.
Also called 2H nuts, ASTM A194 nuts or heavy hexagon nuts.

Heavy hex nuts for flange bolting
These are Hobson's petrochemical heavy hex nuts, made to ASTM A194 (A194M for metric sizes). Heavy hex is the larger, thicker nut pattern used with stud bolts, and these are the nuts for the stud bolts that hold flanged pipework and plant together: Hobson pairs its ASTM A193 grade B7 studs with A194 grade 2H heavy hex nuts, and its B7 stud bolt kits come with two 2H nuts. Hobson offers the range with corrosion-resistant coatings for oil, gas and mining.
For general bolting with class 5 or 8 nuts, or stainless nuts on machine bolts and set screws, see hex nuts. Every nut here is sold individually.
A194 grades: 2H, 4L, 7, 8, 8M and more
From Hobson's petrochemical nut property sheet. Service temperatures are actual metal temperatures of the nut material and apply only to the grades the sheet lists; for the others Hobson publishes none, so check the grade against your project specification. They are not coating limits: Xylan is -40 to 205°C, and Hobson gives no temperature limit for cadmium, zinc or galvanised coatings. Select a row to open that grade.
- 2H hardness: 248 to 327 Brinell for nuts under 1-1/2 inch and 212 to 327 Brinell over 1-1/2 inch (Hobson's sheet); 24 to 35 HRC up to 1-1/2 inch and 35 HRC maximum above, on Hobson's 2H heavy hex sheet.
- 8 and 8M are the 304 and 316 stainless nuts; Hobson's B8 and B8M stud bolts are 304 and 316 stainless.
Grade, material and service temperature from Hobson's petrochemical chemical and mechanical properties sheet (1810201D); sizes and finishes from our product data. "Not published" = Hobson gives no service temperature for that grade. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Imperial heavy hex nut sizes
Every imperial size we carry, one row per size, thread series and tapping, with the grades and finishes in each. Most nuts are UNC up to 1 inch and 8 UN (eight threads per inch) from 1-1/8 inch, the same pattern as Hobson's B7 stud bolts, but some sizes also come in UNC or UNF: match the thread to your stud. Oversize nuts are tapped larger to allow for a coated stud; the allowance is as Hobson's descriptions give it, in inches. Select a row to open exactly that size, thread and tapping. A 1/2 inch BSW grade 2H plain nut is also listed by Hobson; ask us for it.
Size in inches with thread series and threads per inch (TPI) from Hobson's stock data, one row per size, thread series and standard or oversize tapping. Oversize allowance in inches as Hobson's descriptions print it (OS, O/S or ESSO); Hobson does not explain the allowance further. Grades and finishes are listed grade by grade. The 4L hot dip galvanised nuts on standard rows have Hobson codes ending in X but no oversize marking in the description; ask us about their tapping. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

2H heavy hex nut proof loads
Hobson's 2H heavy hex sheet gives the proof load for each plain 2H nut, based on a proof stress of 175,000 psi. A proof load is a test value for the nut, not a working load for the joint: the bolting design comes from the flange or equipment specification.
Proof load in lbf from Hobson's petrochemical heavy hex nut sheet (220331TD, ASTM A194 grade 2H, plain), with kN in brackets (lbf x 0.004448, rounded down). Rows are the plain, standard-tapped 2H nuts on that sheet that we carry; the sheet does not cover oversize, galvanised or coated nuts, or 3 to 4 inch nuts. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Coatings: galvanised, Xylan, cadmium and plain
Coating descriptions from Hobson's petrochemical coating tables. For nuts outdoors or on exposed plant, Hobson recommends hot dip galvanised for long-term outdoor use and rates Xylan blue high for corrosion; it recommends zinc plated and zinc yellow only for indoor, low-corrosion or temporary use. Hobson gives no temperature limit for cadmium, zinc or galvanised coatings: the service temperatures in the grades table are for the nut material, not the coating, so check the coating against your bolting specification. Select a row to open that finish.
Finish, Hobson's description and where it suits. Many coated nuts are oversize: pick Hex or Hex, oversize in the selector, or use the size tables above. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.
| Finish | Hobson's description | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Plain | No coating; supplied lightly oiled to inhibit rust in the packaging. | Not rated for corrosion (Hobson gives no rating); for coated or protected joints as your specification allows |
| Hot dip galvanised | 50 micron, high corrosion resistance, recommended for long-term outdoor use. Hobson's descriptions mark the 2H nuts OVERSIZE; the 4L codes end in X but carry no oversize marking, so ask us about their tapping. | Outdoor and exposed plant |
| Galvanised (Esso spec) | Hot dip galvanised; Hobson's descriptions read ESSO with an oversize allowance (for example ESSO+0.010). | Where your specification calls for the ESSO oversize allowance |
| Xylan blue | 25 micron, high corrosion resistance; reduces friction for evenly tensioned fasteners and make-up torque by as much as 70%; nuts coated internally; operating temperature -40 to 205°C. Every Xylan blue nut here is oversize. | Exposed and chemical plant within its temperature range |
| Zinc and Xylan blue | Zinc plating with Xylan blue, as Hobson lists it; Hobson's descriptions mark these O/S (oversize). | As Xylan blue |
| Zinc and Xylan green | Zinc plating with Xylan green; Hobson's coating sheet covers Xylan 1424 blue and green together (-40 to 205°C). Marked O/S (oversize). | As Xylan blue |
| Cadmium | 12 micron, moderate corrosion resistance, with good lubricity for even tensioning. Hobson gives no temperature limit for this coating. | Where a cadmium coating is specified |
| Zinc plated | 5 micron, low corrosion resistance; for indoor and non-corrosive environments. | Indoors only |
| Zinc yellow | 5 micron, low corrosion resistance; for low-corrosion environments or temporary fixing. | Indoors or temporary only |
| 304 stainless (grade 8) | Uncoated Type 304 stainless. | With B8 (304) stainless studs |
| 316 stainless (grade 8M) | Uncoated Type 316 stainless. | With B8M (316) stainless studs |
| Duplex and super duplex | Uncoated duplex (UNS S31803) and super duplex (UNS S32750, S32760) stainless, to ASTM A1082. | Where duplex or super duplex is specified |
Matching nut, stud and coating
- Grade: B7 studs take 2H nuts (Hobson sells B7 kits with two 2H nuts). Grade 8 nuts are 304 and 8M nuts 316 stainless, the materials of B8 and B8M studs.
- Thread: check UNC, 8 UN or UNF, and imperial or metric, against the stud before ordering.
- Tapping: oversize nuts (OVERSIZE, OS, O/S or ESSO in Hobson's descriptions, with allowances of +0.005 to +0.015 inch where given) are tapped larger for coated studs. Every Xylan blue, zinc and Xylan and Esso galvanised nut here is oversize. Plain 2H nuts in 8 UN from 1-1/8 to 2 inch come both standard and oversize (OS+0.010 or +0.015), so pick the tapping that suits your stud; ask us if unsure.
- Tightening: Hobson's stud bolt torque guide is for lightly oiled studs clamping metal to metal, not gasketed flanges or coated studs; see the stud bolts page. Follow the flange or equipment maker's bolting procedure.

Questions
What is a 2H nut?
An ASTM A194 grade 2H heavy hex nut in carbon steel. Hobson's property sheet gives it a service temperature of 0 to 450°C (actual metal temperature of the nut, not of any coating), and Hobson pairs it with B7 stud bolts.
What nut goes with a B7 stud bolt?
A 2H heavy hex nut to ASTM A194. Hobson's B7 stud bolt kits come with two 2H nuts, or buy the nuts individually here. Match the thread and pick standard tapping for a plain stud; oversize nuts are made for coated studs.
What is the difference between a heavy hex nut and a hex nut?
A heavy hex nut is the larger, thicker pattern made for stud bolting, here to ASTM A194 in grades such as 2H. For everyday class 5, class 8 and stainless nuts, see hex nuts.
What temperature can heavy hex nuts take?
Hobson's sheet gives actual metal temperatures of 0 to 450°C for 2H, -100 to 565°C for 7, -250 to 575°C for 8, and -250 to 600°C for 8M. These are for the nut material, not the coating: Xylan is -40 to 205°C, and Hobson gives no limit for cadmium, zinc or galvanised coatings. It gives no usable figures for 2HM, 3, 4L, 6, 7L, 7M, 8MA, 8T, duplex or super duplex.
What does oversize mean on a heavy hex nut?
The nut is tapped larger than standard, by the allowance Hobson prints (for example +0.010 inch), to allow for a coated stud. Every Xylan blue, zinc and Xylan and Esso galvanised nut here is oversize; plain and stainless nuts are mostly standard. The size tables show each on its own row.
Do you have metric heavy hex nuts?
Yes: grade 2H to ASTM A194M from M6 to M72 (plain, plus hot dip galvanised oversize from M12 to M36), 4L from M12 to M60, grade 8 from M10 to M24 and 8M from M10 to M36. The metric table above lists every size.
Are heavy hex nuts sold individually?
Yes. Every heavy hex nut here has a minimum order of one.
Where can I buy heavy hex nuts in Adelaide?
Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have them delivered to site.
