Eye Nut
Eye nuts that give a threaded ring on a stud or bolt: rated DIN 582 lifting eye nuts in 316 stainless and C15E steel (galvanised, zinc and zinc yellow), plus general purpose stainless and galvanised eye nuts for light rigging and fit-out (no published rating: not for lifting, tie-off or anchoring people or loads).
About the Eye Nut
Eye nuts screw onto a bolt, stud or threaded rod to give a ring for a shackle, hook, rope or cable, for lifting points (rated DIN 582 only) and light rigging and fit-out. The DIN 582 eye nuts are approved for lifting and stamped with their working load limit (WLL): 316 stainless from M6 to M30, and C15E steel hot dip galvanised (M10 to M20), zinc yellow (M6 to M24) or zinc plated (M10 to M16). The 316 stainless round and cone collar eye nuts (M6 to M24) and galvanised mild steel eye nuts (M16 to M24) have no rating and are not for lifting. Choose the type, finish and thread above; the guide below covers the WLL at each angle.
Also called eye nuts, DIN 582 eye nuts or collar eye nuts.
Features
- Rated DIN 582 lifting eye nuts, WLL marked
- General purpose eye nuts with no published rating (not for lifting or tie-off)
- 316 stainless, galvanised, zinc and zinc yellow
- Metric thread sizes
Applications
- Lifting points (DIN 582 only)
- Light rigging and fit-out (general purpose eye nuts: no published rating)
Rated or not: which eye nut is which
An eye nut is a nut with an eye on top: it screws onto a bolt, stud or threaded rod to give you a ring to attach a shackle, hook, rope or cable to. They look alike, but only some are rated, and that decides what you can use them for.
- DIN 582 eye nuts (rated): Hobson's data sheets say they are approved and certified for lifting, can be loaded straight (axial) or at an angle, and are stamped with the working load for axial loading, plus CE, the material grade, the size and an arrow for the axial direction. Hobson lists them as connection points for anchoring, rigging, pulling, lifting or hoisting, threaded onto steel equipment, machines and structures or bolted through steel or timber sections, for use with ropes, cables, shackles and hooks. Test certificates are on Hobson's website.
- 316 collar eye nuts, round collar and cone collar (not rated): Hobson's Did You Know sheet marks both "Not rated for lifting".
- Galvanised mild steel eye nuts, M16 to M24 (not rated): Hobson's product type for them is energy eye nut, and it publishes no data sheet or rating for them.
- Lifting, rigging or tying off a load needs a rated DIN 582 eye nut used within its WLL, or a fitting your engineer specifies. Do not use the collar or mild steel eye nuts for any load job: Hobson publishes no capacity for them. Anchoring people (fall arrest) needs a height safety anchor rated for that use, not an eye nut.
DIN 582 eye nut WLL by size and angle
The WLL stamped on a DIN 582 eye nut is for a straight pull in line with the thread. At an angle each eye nut carries less, as Hobson's data sheets set out below. The angle (β on Hobson's drawing) is measured between the sling leg and the vertical. Hobson's tables stop at 60 degrees from vertical, so do not load a DIN 582 eye nut at a wider angle. The same values apply to every finish; always work to the WLL marked on the eye nut.
Load-bearing capacity per eye nut in kg, from Hobson's DIN 582 data sheets for 316 stainless, hot dip galvanised, zinc yellow and zinc plated (the 316 Did You Know sheet gives the same axial WLL). The last capacity column also applies to eye nuts fitted at the sides of the load with the leg at up to 45 degrees. Packs are the minimum order. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

316 stainless, galvanised or zinc eye nuts?
- 316 stainless (A4): DIN 582 from M6 to M30, and the collar eye nuts from M6 to M24, for wet and coastal work. Hobson's stainless article notes that 316 still needs a good surface finish and rain washing or cleaning to stay bright, and is not made to sit in seawater.
- Hot dip galvanised: DIN 582 in C15E steel from M10 to M20, and the mild steel eye nuts. Hobson's finish comparison rates hot dip galvanising as high corrosion resistance, recommended for long-term outdoor use.
- Zinc yellow passivate: DIN 582 in C15E steel from M6 to M24. Low corrosion resistance, a little more than zinc plated: for low-corrosion environments or temporary fixing.
- Zinc plated: DIN 582 in C15E steel from M10 to M16, for indoor and non-corrosive environments.
- Use a nut, bolt or stud of a matching material, so the joint does not rust from the weakest part first.
Using a DIN 582 eye nut within its rating
Hobson's data sheets give the ratings and markings, not fitting or inspection instructions. Follow the instructions supplied with the eye nut and your lifting procedures. What the sheets do set out:
- Work to the WLL stamped on the eye nut. Each DIN 582 eye nut is marked with its working load for axial loading, CE, the material grade, the size and an arrow for the axial direction.
- For a straight (axial) pull, the stamped WLL applies. For angled or two-leg lifts, use the reduced value from the table for the leg angle; Hobson's tables stop at 60 degrees from vertical.
- The WLL is for the eye nut only. The bolt, stud or rod it screws onto, and its thread engagement, must itself be rated or specified for the load. Hobson publishes no lifting rating for threaded rod.
- General practice, not from Hobson's sheets: the set-up is only as strong as its weakest part, so the shackle, hook and sling need to be rated for the load too. For a set-up not covered by Hobson's tables, ask before you lift.

Questions
What is an eye nut?
A nut with an eye on top. It screws onto a bolt, stud or threaded rod to give a ring for a shackle, hook, rope or cable. Only DIN 582 eye nuts are rated; the others are general hardware.
Can I lift with an eye nut?
Only with a rated DIN 582 eye nut, within the WLL stamped on it and the angle values in Hobson's table. Hobson marks its 316 round and cone collar eye nuts "Not rated for lifting" and publishes no rating for the galvanised mild steel eye nuts, so do not lift with those. The bolt, stud or rod a DIN 582 eye nut sits on must itself be rated or specified for the load.
How much can an M12 eye nut lift?
An M12 DIN 582 eye nut has a WLL of 340kg in a straight pull. With the leg at up to 45 degrees from vertical it is 240kg per eye nut, and from 45 to 60 degrees 170kg, per Hobson's data sheets. Always work to the WLL marked on the eye nut. An M12 collar eye nut has no rating and is not for lifting.
Eye nut or eye bolt?
Use an eye nut where you already have a bolt, stud or threaded rod sticking out; use an eye bolt where there is a tapped hole or a hole to bolt through. For lifting, both need to be rated: DIN 582 for eye nuts, DIN 580 for eye bolts.
What thread sizes do eye nuts come in?
Metric threads: DIN 582 from M6 to M30 (by finish, see the table), 316 collar eye nuts from M6 to M24, and galvanised mild steel eye nuts in M16, M20 and M24.
Stainless or galvanised eye nuts outdoors?
Both are for outdoor use. Hobson rates hot dip galvanising as high corrosion resistance for long-term outdoor use; 316 stainless suits wet and coastal work but still needs rain washing or cleaning, and is not made to sit in seawater. Zinc yellow and zinc plated eye nuts are for indoor and low-corrosion use.
