About the Eye Bolts & Screw Eyes
Eye bolts and screw eyes give you a loop to tie or hang things from, like guy wires, fencing wire, plant wires and light hanging gear (they are not rated lifting eye bolts). They come as eye bolt kits in galvanised, zinc or 304 stainless, 316 stainless collar eye bolts, hot dip galvanised forged eye bolt kits from M16 to M24 up to 800mm long, timber screw eyes and scaffold screws. Eye bolts or lifting eye bolts?
The eye bolts on this page are general hardware for guy wires, hanging and fencing. They are not marked with a working load limit, so do not lift with them, and Hobson publishes no rating for the eye bolt kits, collar eye bolts, screw eyes or scaffold screws: not for anchoring people or loads; use a rated anchor point. For lifting, use our rated lifting eye bolts and eye nuts, forged to DIN 580 and DIN 582 and marked with their WLL.
Types of eye bolts
- Eye bolt kit: a bent eye on a threaded shank, sold as a kit to bolt through timber or steel. Galvanised and zinc plated in imperial sizes (1/4 to 5/8 inch), and 304 stainless M6 to M12; Hobson describes the 304 kits as coming with a nut and 2 washers.
- Collar eye bolt: 316 stainless with a collar under the eye that sits on the surface, for a firmer, neater fixing in marine and coastal work.
- Forged eye bolt kit: a one-piece forged eye, hot dip galvanised, class 4.6, in M16, M20 and M24 and 150 to 800mm long, for through-bolting gates and posts.
- Screw eye: a wood screw thread for screwing straight into timber, for light hanging and wire.
- Scaffold screw: an eye screw for tying scaffold back to the building through a wall plug.
Galvanised, zinc or stainless?
Zinc plated for dry and indoor use; galvanised for general outdoor use; 304 stainless for wet areas and on show; 316 stainless near the coast and around water. Use stainless nuts, washers and fittings with stainless eye bolts.
Fitting eye bolts
- Drill a clearance hole for the thread and bolt through with a washer under the nut, or screw a screw eye into a pilot hole in solid timber.
- Tighten so the eye sits square and firm against the surface.
- Pull in line with the shank where you can. A side pull puts far more strain on an eye bolt than a straight pull.
- Check eye bolts used for guy wires regularly for wear, rust and bending.

Can I lift with these eye bolts?
No. They are general hardware with no working load limit marked. For lifting, use rated lifting eye bolts forged to DIN 580 and marked with their WLL.
What is the difference between an eye bolt and a screw eye?
An eye bolt has a machine thread and is bolted through with a nut and washer. A screw eye has a wood screw thread and screws straight into timber.
Do you have stainless eye bolts?
Yes: 304 stainless eye bolt kits and 316 stainless collar eye bolts. Choose 316 for coastal and marine use.
What are forged eye bolts used for?
