Driver Sockets & Hanger Sockets
Spring nut setters for hex head screws, plus installation sockets for self-drilling rod hangers and the M12 XBolt eye.
About the Driver Sockets & Hanger Sockets
Driver sockets for impact drivers and drills: spring nut setters for hex head screws, and installation sockets for Hobson's threaded rod hangers and XBolt eye anchor. The impaX spring nut setters come in 5/16 and 3/8 inch, 65 and 150mm long, and hold the screw with a spring instead of a magnet, which Hobson lists for stainless screws. There is a 16mm vertical hanger socket for M6, M8 and M10 self-drilling rod hangers, a 1/2 inch drive eye socket for the M12 XBolt eye anchor, and a 6.5mm socket drive. Choose the type and size above; the guide below shows which socket drives what.
Also called vertical hanger sockets, XBolt eye sockets or hex driver sockets.
Features
- Eye bolt socket drive to suit M12 XBolt eye
- Vertical hanger socket (blue) to suit SE/INT M6, M8 and M10
- Socket drive 6.5 A/F, mechanically galvanised
- impaX spring nut setters, 5/16 and 3/8, 65 and 150mm, S2 alloy steel black, 1/4 drive
Applications
- Driving stainless hex head screws (spring nut setters)
- Installing M6, M8 and M10 self-drilling vertical hangers
- Installing M12 XBolt eye anchors
What is in this range
- impaX spring nut setters (5/16 and 3/8 inch, 65 and 150mm): sockets on a 1/4 inch hex shank for hex head screws. Instead of a magnet they hold the screw with ball locks and a spring.
- Vertical hanger socket (MXSVS-SI): a 16mm socket with a 1/4 inch drive for Hobson's self-drilling threaded rod hangers for steel and timber, M6, M8 and M10.
- Eye socket (MXSESM12): Hobson's installation tool for the M12 XBolt (Power-TX) eye anchor, with a 1/2 inch drive.
- Socket drive 6.5 A/F (PXBSOEL-06.5): a 6.5mm across flats socket drive, mechanically galvanised. Hobson files it with its balustrading accessories as a lag eye screw socket drive, but publishes no sheet saying which screws it fits.
Which socket for which screw head
Hobson prints the drive size on each of its hex head screw and hanger data sheets. Match the socket to the head across the flats, not to the screw length. Select a row to open that socket.
Drive sizes from Hobson's screw and hanger data sheets. Gauge-TPI is the screw size, for example 12-14 is 12 gauge with 14 threads per inch. Each spring nut setter size also comes in 150mm. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

| 3/8 inch hex | 14 gauge hex head screws: tek and roofing screws (14-14, 14-20), Type 17 timber screws (14-10, including 304 stainless) and BDX cyclone multiseal roofing screws (14-10, 14-14) | 3/8 spring nut setter |
| 16mm hex | Self-drilling threaded rod hangers: vertical hanger for steel (M10), right angle hangers for steel (M6, M8, M10) and vertical hangers for timber (M10) | Vertical hanger socket |
| M12 XBolt eye | XBolt (Power-TX) eye anchor M12 (MXEMSYM120075) | Eye socket |
| 6.5mm across flats | Filed by Hobson as a lag eye screw socket drive; no sheet names the screws | Socket drive 6.5 A/F |

Spring nut setter or magnetic nut setter?
Hobson lists its spring nut setters for stainless steel screws and for screws with different head heights. They are non-magnetic: ball locks and a spring hold the screw, which Hobson says holds fasteners more securely during installation. All four are in Hobson's impaX range, black S2 alloy steel on a 1/4 inch drive.
A magnetic nut setter holds the screw with a magnet instead; they are on our magnetic nut setter page in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch and 14mm. Hobson's data sheets for its Type 17 hex washer XGRiP screws, vmaX roofing screws and BDX cyclone multiseal screws list both the magnetic and the spring nut setter in the matching size as recommended.
Driving self-drilling vertical hangers
Every self-drilling rod hanger in Hobson's sheets has a 16mm hex, and the sheets name the MXSVS-SI vertical hanger socket to drive them. Hobson recommends a cordless impact driver. For the timber hanger, its sheet gives these steps:
- Drive the hanger into the timber with the 16mm socket. Hobson recommends a drill speed of 1500 rpm.
- Drive it until the body is flush with the timber surface.
- Insert the M10 threaded rod into the hanger.
- Rotate the rod clockwise until it is fully engaged in the hanger.
Vertical hangers into steel
Hobson recommends the hangers for steel for steel 1.0 to 3.0mm thick. Hobson supplies nuts with them and says the supplied backing nut should be used to lock the hanger in place once it is installed. Their working loads and conditions are on the hanger pages: the socket does not change what a hanger can hold. The XBolt PRO concrete hangers take a different socket, the XBolt vertical hanger socket, linked under related products on this page.
Installing the M12 XBolt eye
The eye socket is Hobson's installation tool for the M12 XBolt (Power-TX) eye, a screw type anchor for solid concrete. Hobson describes it as fast and ergonomic, in hardened steel. The eye's own data sheet gives a 12mm hole, a minimum embedment of 55mm and a minimum spacing and edge distance of 60mm; drill and clean the hole, start the eye by hand, then drive it to the embedment depth. The eye's own sheet shows the last turns made with a metal rod through the eye; the eye socket is Hobson's tool for driving it. Hobson's sheet also gives its loads, which apply only in 32 MPa non-cracked concrete at the embedment depths and edge distances it lists; the XBolt eye itself is on our concrete screw page, and we can send you the sheet.

Questions
What size spring nut setter for 12 gauge screws?
5/16 inch. Hobson's data sheets give a 5/16 inch hex for its 10 and 12 gauge hex head screws, including vmaX roofing screws. Our 5/16 spring nut setters come in 65 and 150mm; magnetic ones are on our nut setter page.
What size spring nut setter for 14 gauge screws?
3/8 inch. Hobson's sheets give a 3/8 inch hex for its 14 gauge hex head tek, roofing, Type 17 and cyclone multiseal screws. Our 3/8 spring nut setters come in 65 and 150mm; magnetic ones are on our nut setter page.
Why use a spring nut setter instead of a magnetic one?
Hobson lists the spring nut setter for stainless steel screws and for screws with different head heights. It is non-magnetic and holds the screw with ball locks and a spring.
What socket do I need for self-drilling vertical hangers?
A 16mm socket. Hobson's hanger sheets name the MXSVS-SI vertical hanger socket (1/4 inch drive) for its M6, M8 and M10 hangers for steel and timber, and recommend a cordless impact driver.
How do I install an XBolt eye anchor?
For the M12 eye, drill a 12mm hole, clean it, start the eye by hand and drive it to at least 55mm embedment with the M12 eye socket (1/2 inch drive) or, as the eye's sheet shows, finish with a metal rod through the eye, keeping at least 60mm from edges and other anchors as Hobson's sheet sets out.
Are these for impact drivers?
The spring nut setters are in Hobson's impaX range on a 1/4 inch drive, and Hobson recommends a cordless impact driver for the rod hangers the vertical hanger socket drives.
Where can I buy driver sockets and hanger sockets in Adelaide?
Order through Allmat. Order ahead by phone on 1300 03 03 63 or send your list for a quote, then click and collect from 25 Kapara Road, Gillman, or have them delivered to site.
