About the T-Bolt
T bolts have a T-shaped head that slides into the T-slots of a machine table, jig or fixture, for clamping work and fixtures down on mills, drills and welding tables. Ours are SOKO class 10.9 high tensile steel, plain finish and part threaded, in metric M8 to M24 (30 to 230mm long) and BSW 3/8 to 1 inch (1-1/2 to 8 inches long), in packs of 5 to 25. What T bolts are for
A T bolt has a T-shaped head instead of a hex. The head slides along the wide, undercut part of a T-slot and the shank comes up through the narrow opening, so the bolt can be set anywhere along the slot and the head bears under the slot lips when the nut is done up. That is how work, vices, clamps, jigs and fixtures are held down on machine tables, and it is what most people mean by T slot bolts.
Ours are from Hobson's SOKO high tensile range: class 10.9 steel, plain finish, part threaded, sold as the bolt only (order nuts and washers separately).
Choosing a T slot bolt: thread, slot and length
- Thread: metric coarse (M8 to M24) or BSW (3/8 to 1 inch). Match the nuts, clamps or tapped parts you already use; metric and BSW threads do not interchange.
- Slot: the head has to slide in the wide part of the T-slot and the shank pass through the opening. Hobson publishes no head or neck dimensions for these T bolts, so match the bolt you are replacing, or ask us.
- Length: long enough to pass through the clamp or part being held, with full thread engagement in the nut. Metric lengths are in millimetres and BSW lengths in inches.

Every T bolt we carry, smallest to largest, metric then BSW. All are class 10.9, plain finish and part threaded. Select a size to open it in the selector, then pick the length.

Nuts and washers for T bolts
- Class 10.9 is a high tensile bolt. For metric T bolts, Hobson's nyloc nut torque sheets work class 10 nuts on class 10.9 bolts; plain class 10 hex nuts from M6 to M48 are on our hex nut page.
- For BSW T bolts, most BSW hex nuts we carry are mild steel, brass or stainless. For 1/2 inch BSW there is also a plain grade 2H (ASTM A194) heavy hex nut on our hex nut page. Hobson does not pair a nut with these T bolts, so call us on 1300 03 03 63 for a nut to suit a class 10.9 BSW bolt.
- A flat washer or a flange nut spreads the clamping load under the nut onto the clamp or part.
- Hobson publishes no tightening torque for these T bolts: its SOKO class 10.9 torque sheet covers socket, button and countersunk head screws, not T bolts. Follow the machine or fixture maker's figures.
Plain finish: where T bolts suit
Plain means no added coating: Hobson supplies plain products lightly oiled to slow rust in the packet and help them go in. That suits machine tables, jigs and fixtures indoors, where the bolts stay dry and oiled.
Plain steel has no corrosion protection for outdoor or wet work. For anything exposed to the weather, Hobson's corrosion guide calls for stainless steel or hot dip galvanising, and we do not carry T bolts in either, so these are for dry, indoor use. Hobson publishes no load rating for them, so do not use them for structural connections or anything that holds people; that needs a rated fastener chosen by your engineer or designer.

In packs of 5 to 25 depending on size and length: for example 25 for M8, 10 for most M10 to M20 lengths, and 5 for M24, the longest lengths and the 7/8 and 1 inch BSW. The size table lists the pack for every length.
