Tie Wire Suspension Anchor
Pre-assembled one-piece tie wire anchor with an expansion clip, M6 x 60, zinc yellow, for suspending wire from concrete.
About the Tie Wire Suspension Anchor
Tie wire anchors hold up suspended ceilings on tie wire, and carry cable ties and conduit from concrete and concrete block: you hammer the anchor into a 6mm hole and set it by pulling with a claw hammer. It is a one-piece M6 x 60 anchor with an expansion clip and a 6mm eye, zinc yellow passivate, in packs of 100. Hobson gives a working load in tension of 0.65kN, only in 32 MPa concrete at 30mm embedment, 90mm spacing and 45mm edge distance. Choose it above; the guide below covers that load, drilling and setting.
Also called tie wire anchors, expansion clip anchor or ceiling tie wire anchor.

- One-piece, pre-assembled
- Expansion clip, set with a claw hammer

What a tie wire suspension anchor is
Hobson's Conxtruct tie wire suspension anchor is a pre-assembled, one-piece anchor for suspending ceilings, attaching cable ties and supporting conduit. It is carbon steel, M6 x 60mm, with a 6mm eye for the tie wire and an expansion clip with gripping lugs, which Hobson says allow maximum setting capacity during installation.
You drill a 6mm hole (Hobson: the hole diameter must equal the body diameter), blow and brush it clean, hammer the anchor in, then pull on it with a claw hammer to complete the installation. There is no screwing and no separate setting tool.
Hobson lists concrete and concrete block as base materials. Its working load is published for 32 MPa concrete only; for concrete block it gives none.
Tie wire anchor, suspension anchor or rod hanger?
A suspended ceiling's hanger spacing, wire size and the load on each hanger come from the ceiling system's design, not from this page. Use the anchor the ceiling or services designer specifies, and check that the load on each anchor stays within the working load below with every one of its conditions met.
- Light suspension under a concrete slab with tie wire (ceiling grids, cable ties, conduit): this anchor, 0.65kN in tension in 32 MPa concrete at 30mm embedment, 90mm spacing and 45mm edge distance.
- A higher published load from a short anchor: the suspension anchor (M6 x 25 and 35), a turn to set sleeve anchor with an 8mm eyelet; Hobson gives 1.1kN (M6 x 25) and 1.3kN (M6 x 35) in tension in 32 MPa concrete, each at its own embedment, spacing and edge distance (see Related).
- A hammer set anchor with a tie wire hole for concrete, solid brick or stone and core filled block: the H-IT tie wire anchor in 5 and 6.5mm on the nail in anchors page. Hobson marks it for internal use only. Its sheet does not say whether its figures are working or ultimate loads, so we do not publish loads for it.
- Services or ceilings hung on threaded rod instead of wire: a hanger that screws into the concrete, either the XBolt vertical hanger (M10 rod) or the XBolt PRO hangers (M8, M10 or M12 rod).
- Hobson publishes no figures for shear, angled pulls, brick or concrete block, so this anchor is for a straight downward pull in concrete. It is not for lifting, fall protection or anchoring people.
Size, drilling and working load
One size, M6 x 60. The working load is Hobson's and applies only with the concrete strength, embedment, spacing and edge distance on the same row. Closer to an edge or to the next anchor, or in weaker concrete, the published load does not apply. Select the row to open it in the selector.
From Hobson's tie wire suspension anchor data sheet (1910101DS). Dimensions in mm. Working load in tension in 32 MPa concrete: the governing minimum of the concrete and steel working loads, with factors of safety of 2.5 (steel) and 3.0 (concrete) already included. Hobson gives no minimum concrete thickness and no values for shear, angled pulls or concrete block. Packs of 100. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

How to install a tie wire anchor
Steps 1 to 4 follow the installation pictures and text on Hobson's data sheet; step 5 is ours.
- Drill a 6mm hole with a hammer drill, at least 45mm deep, at least 90mm from the next anchor and 45mm from any edge. Use a 6mm bit, not 6.5mm: Hobson requires the hole diameter to equal the anchor body.
- Blow and brush the hole clean: Hobson's pictures show a blow pump and a brush.
- Hammer the anchor into the hole to at least 30mm embedment.
- Pull on the anchor with a claw hammer to set the expansion clip and complete the installation.
- Thread the tie wire through the 6mm eye and fix it as the ceiling system's instructions require.
Finish: zinc yellow for dry ceiling spaces
Zinc yellow passivate is electroplated zinc with an iridescent yellow conversion layer, about 5 microns thick. Hobson rates it low corrosion resistance and recommends it for low-corrosion environments or temporary fixing. Hobson's corrosion guide (written for metal connectors, the closest guide Hobson gives) allows zinc plated finishes only in enclosed locations (inside the building envelope) in very low and low corrosivity zones, so this anchor is for dry indoor spaces away from the coast. Everywhere else the guide asks for more than zinc yellow: galvanised Z275 when enclosed in coastal, industrial and sea spray zones, and when sheltered in very low and low zones; Z275 with a soft seal coating, or stainless steel, when sheltered in coastal and industrial zones; stainless steel or hot dip galvanising when exposed to the weather; stainless steel when sheltered or exposed in the sea spray zone; and 316 stainless in any position within 2m of a pool edge. For any of those positions, ask us for an alternative.

Questions
How much weight can a tie wire anchor hold?
Hobson gives a working load in tension of 0.65kN for the M6 x 60, only in 32 MPa concrete at 30mm embedment, at least 90mm from the next anchor and 45mm from an edge. Factors of safety are included. There are no published values for shear, angled pulls or concrete block, and the ceiling design sets the load on each hanger.
What size drill do I need for a tie wire anchor?
6mm, drilled at least 45mm deep. Hobson requires the hole diameter to equal the anchor body, so use a 6mm bit, not 6.5mm (6.5mm suits the suspension anchor, not this one).
How do you set a tie wire suspension anchor?
Blow and brush the 6mm hole clean, hammer the anchor in, then pull on it with a claw hammer. The pull sets the expansion clip; no setting tool is needed.
Can I use it in brick or block?
Hobson lists concrete and concrete block as base materials but publishes its working load for 32 MPa concrete only. For block there is no published load, so the ceiling or services designer has to confirm the fixing.
Tie wire anchor or suspension anchor?
Both hang tie wire from concrete. The tie wire anchor is a 6mm drill, pull to set clip anchor with 0.65kN in tension at 30mm embedment; the suspension anchor is a 6.5mm drill, turn to set sleeve anchor with 1.1 or 1.3kN in tension at 20 or 25mm embedment. Each load applies only with its own spacing and edge distance in 32 MPa concrete.
Can it be used outdoors?
No. Zinc yellow is a low corrosion finish for dry indoor spaces away from the coast: Hobson's corrosion guide allows zinc plated only where enclosed in very low and low corrosivity zones. Sheltered spots in coastal zones need Z275 galvanised with a soft seal coating or stainless steel, the sea spray zone needs stainless steel, and within 2m of a pool edge it asks for 316 stainless. Ask us for an alternative.
How are tie wire anchors sold?
In packs of 100.
