Suspension Anchor

The Conxtruct suspension anchor is a pre-assembled tie-wire sleeve anchor for suspending ceilings, attaching cable ties and other suspension work.

About the Suspension Anchor

Suspension anchors hold up suspended ceilings on tie wire, and carry cable ties and other light hanging work from a concrete soffit: a pre-assembled sleeve anchor with an 8mm eyelet. We carry the M6 in 25 and 35mm lengths, zinc yellow passivate, in packs of 100. Choose the length above; the guide below covers working loads with their conditions, edge distances, installation and the options for threaded rod.

Also called ceiling anchors, suspended ceiling hangers or ceiling tie wire fixings.

Features

  • Pre-assembled tie wire sleeve anchor
  • Zinc yellow passivate finish
  • 8mm eyelet
  • Threaded suspension body
  • No installation tool required
  • M6 with 6.5mm drill size

Applications

  • Suspending ceilings on tie wire
  • Hanging cable ties and light services from concrete
  • Ceiling grid hangers in concrete soffits

What a suspension anchor is

A suspension anchor is a small sleeve anchor with an eyelet instead of a bolt head. Hobson's Conxtruct suspension anchor is pre-assembled: a threaded suspension body with an 8mm eyelet, screwed into an expansion sleeve. You push it into a drilled hole and turn the body by its eyelet; the sleeve expands and locks it in the hole. No setting tool is needed.

Hobson lists it for suspending ceilings, attaching cable ties and other suspension work, in concrete, solid brick, stone and concrete block. The eyelet takes ceiling hanger wire or tie wire. Hobson's working loads are published for 32 MPa concrete only; for brick, stone and block it gives none.

Sizes, working loads and edge distances

Both lengths are M6 and go in a 6.5mm hole. The working loads below are Hobson's, and they only apply with the embedment, spacing and edge distance on the same row. A suspended ceiling's hanger spacing and the load on each hanger come from the ceiling system's design, not from this table.

From Hobson's suspension sleeve anchor data sheet: 32 MPa concrete, working load in tension, which is the governing minimum of the concrete and steel working loads with factors of safety of 2.5 (steel) and 3.0 (concrete) already included. Hobson gives no minimum concrete thickness, and no values for shear, angled pulls or brick, stone and block. Dimensions in mm. Packs of 100. Tap a number to show it in the selector above.

Installing a suspension anchor

  1. Drill a 6.5mm hole at least as deep as the anchor (25 or 35mm).
  2. Clean the dust out of the hole.
  3. Push the anchor into the hole.
  4. Twist and tighten the suspension body by its eyelet to expand the sleeve and lock it in place.
  5. Keep to the minimum spacing and edge distance in the table; closer than that, the published working load does not apply.

Which ceiling anchor: suspension anchor or rod hanger?

  • Suspension anchor (this page): turn-to-set sleeve anchor with an 8mm eyelet, 1.1 or 1.3kN working load in tension in 32 MPa concrete at the embedment, spacing and edge distance in the table above.
  • Tie wire suspension anchor: a one-piece M6 x 60 expansion clip anchor in a 6mm hole, set by pulling on it with a claw hammer; Hobson gives a 0.65kN working load in tension in 32 MPa concrete at 30mm embedment, 90mm spacing and 45mm edge distance.
  • Threaded rod hanger: where services or ceilings hang on threaded rod rather than wire, an XBolt PRO vertical hanger screws into the concrete and takes M8, M10 or M12 rod, with ETA approvals.

Finish

Zinc yellow passivate: electroplated zinc with a yellow conversion layer, about 5 microns. Hobson rates it low corrosion resistance, for low-corrosion environments or temporary fixing. It suits dry, enclosed ceiling spaces; for anything exposed to the weather Hobson's corrosion guide calls for stainless or hot dip galvanising.

Questions

What drill size for a suspension anchor?

6.5mm, drilled at least as deep as the anchor: 25mm for the M6 x 25 and 35mm for the M6 x 35.

How much weight can a suspension anchor hold?

Hobson gives a working load in tension of 1.1kN for the M6 x 25 and 1.3kN for the M6 x 35, in 32 MPa concrete, at 20 or 25mm embedment with at least 60 or 75mm spacing and 30 or 38mm edge distance. Factors of safety are included. There are no published values for shear or for brick, stone or block.

Do I need a setting tool?

No. Turn the suspension body by its eyelet to expand the sleeve.

Can suspension anchors go into brick or block?

Hobson lists concrete, solid brick, stone and concrete block as base materials, but its working loads are only for 32 MPa concrete. For brick, stone or block there is no published load, so the ceiling or services designer has to confirm the fixing.

What is the eyelet size?

8mm.

How are suspension anchors sold?

In packs of 100.
