House slab calculator: raft and waffle pod

A 12x10m stiffened raft with a 100mm slab and 300mm wide edge beams going 300mm below it needs 15.85 m³ of concrete, 16.64 m³ with 5% extra. Ordered as ready-mix with 10% extra and rounded up, that is 17.6 m³ (about 23.02 cubic yards). The same house as a waffle pod slab, 63 pods of 225mm under an 85mm topping, takes 20.36 m³.

Wall thickenings, garage step-down beams and deeper edges: each run is its length × width halfway down × depth below the slab.

Allmat concrete calculator

If you order ready-mix, ask for about 17.6 m³.

You need 16.64 m³ of concrete

15.85 m³ plus extra for spillage and uneven ground (5% on the house slab (raft or waffle pod)).

Order a ready-mix truck

If you order ready-mix, ask for about 17.6 m³. That adds 10% and rounds up to the next step a supplier sells.

Raft beams are dug, not formed, so over-excavation and an uneven base take more than the drawing shows (CCAA, Ordering Premixed Concrete). Your concreter will judge the ground.

Details: other bag sizes, water, weight, getting it home

From bags this would be 1831 x 20kg Concrete Mix 20kg, but at this size the truck is the sensible order.

Cement Australia's guide: under 0.1 m³ use bags, 0.1 to 0.5 m³ mix your own, over 0.5 m³ ready-mix. Up to about 1 m³ we still show the bags; past that, and for a house slab or a driveway beyond a small patch, it is a truck pour.

How we worked it out
  • House slab (raft or waffle pod): 15.85 m³ plus 5% = 16.64 m³, ordered as ready-mix.

Cement Australia: about 110 x 20kg bags make 1 m³ (their FAQ, calculator and the PROSTRENGTH Rapid Set data sheet). Rapid Set Concrete publishes no per-m³ figure, so it uses the same 110.

Trade Mortar: about 20 house bricks or 10 masonry blocks per 20kg bag at a 10mm joint (Cement Australia).

Estimates only. Check sizes and quantities against your plans, and with your engineer or builder, before you order.

Pour-day check

Type in the weather for the day you plan to pour. Temperature never changes how much you need; it changes the timing.

  • Concrete Mix 20kg: 20°C is within the maker's range (5°C to 35°C).
  • Ready-mix (house slab or driveway): AS 1379 requires the concrete to arrive between 5°C and 35°C; outside that, talk to the plant (CCAA).
  • Keep it damp for 7 days (Cement Australia).

What a stiffened raft slab is

A stiffened raft is a floor slab with deeper beams cast into it: an edge beam all the way round and, on most sites, internal beams across the middle. The slab, the beams and any pads under heavy points are poured in one go.

So the concrete is the slab plus the parts of the beams that go below it. For the 12x10m example that is 12 m³ of slab and 3.85 m³ of edge beam.

How the edge beam corners are counted

Adding up the four sides of the edge beam counts each corner twice. The calculator instead takes the band inside the outline, so every corner is counted once. For the example that is 0.11 m³ less than adding the sides up.

The same holds for L and U shaped houses with square corners. Where internal beams cross, enter the number of crossings and the overlap is taken off once each. Sloped beam sides use the width halfway down.

Waffle pod slab volume

A waffle pod slab sits on polystyrene blocks laid on the ground, with ribs between them and a topping over them. The concrete is the whole depth minus the pods. On the same house with 225mm pods and an 85mm topping, 63 full pods leave 20.36 m³, against 37.2 m³ if the slab were solid to that depth.

Ordered as ready-mix with 10% extra, that waffle slab is 22.4 m³.

1090x1090mm375mm1.19 m²0.446 m³
Heights as listed by EPS pod makers; 175mm is made in some states only. Open or moulded pods hold less than a solid block, so use the void volume your supplier gives.

Why the pod count comes from your plans

Pod layouts depend on the rib width, the edge setback and where beams and set-downs fall, so two houses of the same area can take different numbers of pods. The calculator does not guess the count: type the full pods shown on your plans, and the area of any cut pods.

Open or moulded pods hold less than a solid block of the same size. For those, choose Other pod and type the void volume from the supplier, or the answer will be short.

What the calculator leaves to your engineer

Wall thickenings, garage step-down beams and deeper edges from your drawing go in as extra runs, each as length × width halfway down × depth below the slab, and piers under the beams go in as a count. Beyond that the tool stops and the drawing takes over.

  • Beam depths and slab thickness by site class: your engineer sizes them to AS 2870, and the calculator only adds up what the drawing shows.
  • Set-down recesses for wet areas: a few hundredths of a cubic metre a metre, left out.
  • Steel is not deducted: mesh and bar take well under 1% of the volume.
  • Over-excavation and an uneven base: measured on site, not from a plan, so order with the CCAA 10% allowance and the concreter's judgement.
  • Classes E and P and filled sites, edge beams over 1.5m deep, slabs over 30m long: engineering advice territory.

Ordering ready-mix for a house slab

Cement Concrete and Aggregates Australia (CCAA) advises ordering about 10% more than the exact volume and rounding up, because premix is batched in 0.2 m³ steps. Suppliers often charge a small load as if it were a bigger one, so a top-up truck is poor value: order enough the first time.

Questions

For a stiffened raft, add the slab to the parts of the beams below it. A 12x10m raft with a 100mm slab and 300x300mm edge beams is about 15.85 m³ before any extra.

Multiply the slab area by the pod height plus topping, then take off the pods: number of pods × pod length × width × height. Add any edge beam that goes deeper than the pods.

The common solid pods are 1090x1090mm in plan, in heights of 150, 175, 225, 300 and 375mm. The ribs between them are 100 or 110mm wide.

Yes. The pod count changes with the layout, so take it from your slab plans. Cut pods are entered as a total area.

No. Slab thickness, beam sizes and pod heights come from your engineer. The calculator turns those sizes into a concrete quantity.
