Security mesh clips bolt in with an M8 fastener and lock mesh fencing panels in place, for security fencing at prisons, schools, new housing and unit complexes. The clip is 24 x 24mm and 2.5mm high, in 316 stainless or hot dip galvanised, in packs of 300. What a security mesh clip does
Hobson's description: the security mesh clip is bolted in with the fastener and locks the mesh fencing in place. It is a small 24 x 24mm clip, 2.5mm high, for an M8 bolt. Hobson notes the length required depends on the fencing, so size the bolt to the fence you are fixing.
Hobson lists it for security fencing around prisons, schools, new housing and unit complexes, and says to pair it with a shear nut on the cup head bolt so it cannot be tampered with. Hobson publishes no security rating, test standard or load for the clip, and we claim none: it is one part of a fixing, and how secure a fence is depends on the whole fence design. Hobson notes a test certificate or report is available for it; ask us if your project needs it.

Galvanised or stainless: which suits the site
A fence is an exposed position. Hobson's corrosion guide for metal connectors gives stainless 304 or 316, or hot dip galvanising, for exposed positions in low, coastal and high industrial zones, but only 304 or 316 stainless in the seaspray zone, and 316 within 2m of a pool edge. Hobson's finish comparison puts hot dip galvanising at about 50 microns, high corrosion resistance, recommended for long term outdoor use.
- Hot dip galvanised clip: most inland and suburban fences, with galvanised cup head bolts and galvanised shear nuts.
- 316 stainless clip: seaspray zones, with 316 cup head bolts. Within 2m of a pool edge Hobson's corrosion guide calls for 316, but Hobson publishes no rating for the clip, so a pool barrier must meet the pool barrier rules and the fence maker's specification for its fixings. Our shear nuts come in 304 stainless and galvanised only.
- Keep the clip, bolt and nut in the same family. Hobson's stainless article notes carbon steel corrodes faster when coupled to stainless steel in water. It also says neither 304 nor 316 is made to sit in seawater, and salt left to build up can visibly corrode even 316.
Fitting mesh clips with cup head bolts and break-off nuts
- Choose M8 cup head bolts in the same finish as the clips, long enough to pass through the fence frame, the mesh, the clip and a full nut; Hobson notes the length depends on the fencing.
- Put the bolt through the frame and mesh and fit the clip so it bears on the mesh, then the nut.
- Check the panel is where you want it before the final tightening: a shear nut is not meant to come off again.
- Tighten the shear nut until its hex breaks away, leaving a smooth cone the spanner cannot grip. Our shear nut page gives the shear torque range for each nut. With stainless parts, drive steadily: Hobson's stainless article notes galling is worse with tight clearances, dirt and over-tightening.
