Countersunk wood screws
A countersunk wood screw has a tapered head that sits flush with, or just below, the timber surface in a countersunk hole, and a thread made for timber. They are the traditional screw for joinery, cabinetry, fit-out and fixing hardware such as hinges, where a neat flush head matters.
We carry two ranges: 304 stainless with a Phillips drive, made to JIS B1112, and solid brass with a slotted drive, made to ANSI B18.6.1.
Choosing wood screws: gauge and length
Wood screws are sized by gauge and length. The gauge (#6, #8, #10, #12, #14) is a number for the screw's diameter: the bigger the number, the thicker the screw. For the brass screws we also show the threads per inch (TPI): an 8 gauge brass screw has 15 threads per inch, often written #8-15.
Length is in inches, and for a countersunk screw it is measured from the top of the head, as Hobson measures its countersunk screws. Choose a length that passes through the part you are fixing and well into the timber behind it. In millimetres: 1/2 inch is 12.7mm, 3/4 inch 19.1mm, 1 inch 25.4mm, 1-1/2 inch 38.1mm, 2 inch 50.8mm, 2-1/2 inch 63.5mm and 3 inch 76.2mm.

Stainless steel or brass wood screws?
- 304 stainless (A2), Phillips drive: Hobson lists these screws for cabinetry; stainless also suits joinery and timber that gets wet, where plain steel would rust. Hobson's stainless article explains that 316 was developed from 304 for seaside conditions, so for work right on the coast, ask us first. Fix stainless hardware with stainless screws.
- Brass, slotted drive: brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, which Hobson describes as valued for its workability, hardness, corrosion resistance and attractive appearance, and as non-magnetic. Brass wood screws suit brass hinges and hardware, furniture and restoration joinery, where the slotted brass head is part of the look.
Pre-drilling and fitting wood screws
Hobson's Power-TX EZBIT kits drill a pilot hole and countersink in one pass, sized by screw gauge. Hobson publishes these drill sizes for the EZBIT kits, not as pilot sizes for these particular wood screws. Brass screws need a correct pilot hole, as brass is soft and a brass screw shears easily if forced (general advice):
- Drill a pilot hole and countersink, so the head sits flush without splitting the timber.
- Drive the stainless screws with a Phillips bit and the brass screws with a slotted bit that fits the slot.
- Stop as soon as the head is flush.
- For a raised, finished look on panels and trim, fit a cup washer of the same gauge under the head.
Power-TX EZBIT pre-drill and countersink bit drill diameters by screw gauge, from Hobson's EZBIT kit sheet. There is no #6 EZBIT.
| Screw gauge | EZBIT drill |

| #8 | 3.20mm (1/8 inch) |
| #10 | 3.60mm (9/64 inch) |
| #12 | 4.00mm (5/32 inch) |
| #14 | 5.25mm (13/64 inch) |

Questions
What size wood screw do I need?
Pick the gauge for the job (the bigger the gauge number, the thicker the screw) and a length that passes through the part you are fixing and well into the timber behind. We carry #6 to #14 in 304 stainless and #6 to #12 in brass.
What does #8-15 mean on a wood screw?
8 is the gauge and 15 is the number of threads per inch. Our brass #8 wood screws have 15 threads per inch, shown beside the gauge; you choose by gauge and length.
Stainless steel or brass wood screws?
304 stainless with a Phillips drive for cabinetry and joinery, and where the screw may get wet; solid brass with a slotted drive for brass hinges and hardware, furniture and restoration work, where the look matters.
Do I need to pre-drill for wood screws?
Pre-drilling a pilot hole and countersink gives a flush head without splitting the timber, and brass screws in particular need a correct pilot, as they shear easily. Hobson's Power-TX EZBIT kits drill and countersink in one pass: 3.2mm for #8, 3.6mm for #10, 4.0mm for #12 and 5.25mm for #14.
How is a countersunk wood screw measured?
From the top of the head to the tip, because the head sits in the timber. Our lengths are in inches, from 1/2 to 3 inch.
What screwdriver bit do I need?
A Phillips bit for the 304 stainless screws and a slotted bit that fits the slot for the brass screws.
How are wood screws sold?
In packs: 200 for the #6 and #8 stainless and all the brass screws, and 100 for the #10, #12 and #14 stainless.
