About the Tee Nut
Tee nuts, or t nuts, go into a drilled hole in timber, particle board or composite panel to leave a flush thread for bolts, castors, adjustable feet and furniture fittings. Four prong tee nuts come zinc plated in M4 to M10 and 3/16 to 3/8 inch UNC, and large flange (slab) tee nuts come in 304 stainless in M10 and 3/8 inch UNC. How tee nuts work
A tee nut is a threaded barrel with a flat flange on one end. It goes into a hole drilled through timber, particle board or a composite panel, with the flange on the face opposite the bolt, and leaves a flush or recessed female thread. Tightening the bolt pulls the flange against the board.
- Four prong tee nut: four prongs on the flange bite into the timber and stop the tee nut twisting and moving. Zinc plated mild steel, for furniture, castors in lounges, office and domestic furniture, adjustable feet and metal thread screw fixings.
- Slab tee nut (large flange): a large base flange for soft materials that avoids the need for a washer, and a rounded shoulder with no drive recess for tamper resistance. It can be welded to sheet metal. 304 stainless, for outdoor play equipment in plastic, fibreglass, stainless or timber, fixings in public places, and trains, buses and trucks.
Tee nut sizes and the hole to drill
Drill the hole size Hobson lists for each tee nut (hole to drill in the table). Choose the thread to match the bolt or the castor or foot stem, metric or UNC, and a shaft that suits the board thickness. Select a size to open it in the selector.

Slab tee nuts (large flange)
- M10 and 3/8 inch UNC, 304 (A2) stainless, packs of 100.
- Base flange 25 x 18mm and 2mm thick; threaded shoulder 11.5mm across and 11mm high overall, from Hobson's data sheet. The dimension tables in the selector give 25 x 17.6mm, 11.3mm and 10.8mm for the M10.
- No prongs and no drive recess.
How to fit a tee nut
- Mark the position and drill straight through the board at the hole size in the table.
- For a recessed finish, counterbore the face first to the flange diameter.
- Push the tee nut into the hole from the side opposite the bolt.
- Tap the flange down with a hammer until the prongs are fully in the timber and the flange sits flush or in its recess.
- Fit the bolt, machine screw, castor or adjustable foot from the other side, in the same thread: an M6 tee nut takes an M6 thread, a 1/4 inch tee nut a 1/4 inch UNC thread.
Zinc plated or 304 stainless tee nuts?
- Zinc plated (four prong): a thin, about 5 micron, zinc coating recommended for indoor and non-corrosive conditions.
- 304 stainless (slab): for outdoor play equipment, public places and vehicles. Stainless threads can gall (lock up) if driven fast or overtightened: run the bolt in at a slower speed and lubricate the thread with a molybdenum disulphide based lubricant where you can.

What is a tee nut used for?

Are t nuts and tee nuts the same?
Yes. T nut and tee nut are two spellings of the same part: a threaded barrel with a flange, set into wood or board.

Which tee nut do I need for a castor or adjustable foot?
A four prong tee nut in the same thread as the castor or foot stem, metric or UNC. Check the stem thread before you order, as metric and UNC do not mix.
Can tee nuts be used outdoors?
Use the 304 stainless slab tee nuts outdoors: Hobson lists them for outdoor play equipment and fixings in public places. The zinc plated four prong tee nuts are for indoor work.
